Mill Cove Woman Donates Tree For Boston

A Lunenburg County woman is this year's donor of Nova Scotia's Christmas tree for Boston. Mary Lou Milligan of Mill Cove has a 47-foot white spruce on her property that is about 40-years-old. The large evergreen is an annual thank-you gift to the city for help provided after the 1917 Halifax explosion. About 2,000 people were killed and hundreds more were left injured and homeless by the explosion. Boston was quick to provide medical personnel and supplies. A crew from the Department of Natural Resources will cut down the tree during a public ceremony November 12 at 10am. Another ceremony will be held in Halifax on November 13 at 11:30am for a final farewell before the province transports the tree to Boston. This will be the 42nd tree sent to Boston by the province since the tradition began in 1971. The tree lighting will take place on the Boston Common, December 5, at a ceremony attracting about 30,000 people and broadcast live on television.

Town Hires Ekistics For Preliminary Work

The town of Bridgewater has awarded more work to Ekistics Planning and Design from Halifax. The group, which also created the master plan for Generations Active Park, has been selected to complete phase one of the preliminary and detailed design for the Downtown and Waterfront Master Plan. The consulting firm received the top score by the committee. They are also slightly under budget at a cost of $249,426. The budget was $250,000. Mayor David Walker says the group has a proven track record.

Walker says they're not putting shovels in the ground, but getting cost analysis for the four projects on the table right now including wider sidewalks and resting places on King Street, re-development of the south parkade, and parking options on King Street.

She says the program helps recognize contributions from seniors, addresses myths around aging and teaches people about healthy aging and quality of life.

Bridgewater: New Patient Intakes Announced

Health officials are asking for patience when Bridgewater's newest doctor and nurse practitioner accept more new patients next week. Dr. Shelia Dwyer and Cheryl Soroka will each hold telephone intakes on November 6th. Those looking for a family doctor or nurse practitioner should expect to wait a few hours to navigate through the caller cue. When the intake has reached capacity, callers will hear a busy signal. If you get through you will get a message asking you to hold on the line. However, Vice President of Health Services Janet Simm says some changes will help callers this time around. The number to phone is 527-4814 on Wednesday evening. You should have your health card ready.

People who do not currently have a Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner or who are travelling outside the District for care are eligible. People who wish to be considered as a patient are asked to:

-   Call 527-4814 beginning at 5:30 pm November 6.
-   Please have your health care number, date-of-birth, address and a valid current telephone number ready
-   Callers may only register immediate family members from the same household (ie spouses, children).

Callers who are successful in getting through the line, will hear a message telling them to stay on the line. These callers will then be entered into a queue and processed in order. This takes time. Please be prepared to wait on the line for several hours.

Bridgewater RCMP Probe Cow Incidents

What's the beef? Bridgewater RCMP are asking the same thing after a cow was shot in Voglers Cove. Police say two young cows were removed from a barn near Dolliver Lake sometime between the hours of 6:30pm Monday evening and 9:30am Tuesday morning. Constable David Cullen says both animals were found on a road not far from where they were taken.

In another incident, a cow was shot and killed in Italy Cross between Sunday evening and Monday morning. The suspects tried to remove the animal from the property but were unsuccessful. Cullen says they don't have any motives at this point, but it appears people are looking for winter meat. RCMP say its unclear if the two incidents are related.

Chester Will Keep Gold River School

Chester council will utilize space at the former Gold River-Western Shore elementary school. Council decided to relocate their recreational and community development departments, along with the local food bank to the building along Highway 3. Warden Allen Webber says they're estimating roughly $366,000 worth of renovations need to be done to the school before they can move in including fixing the roof, and interior work to suit the building to their needs. He expects work to start soon.

Roughly 15 staff members will be relocated to the former school. Webber feels they made the best decision for the community. Meanwhile, council has also directed staff to issue a request for proposals for the sale of the annex building, near the municipality's headquarters. The annex building currently houses the two municipal departments and the food bank.

Fall Storm Could Hit South Shore

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement regarding some nasty weather that could be on its way. The weather agency indicates a low-pressure system will move over the Great Lakes tomorrow and then intensify into a "large fall storm". Rain is expected to begin over western Nova Scotia late Halloween night and spread to the rest of the province overnight. A very windy, wet and mild day is expected on Friday. Environment Canada predicts potential for gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour. The statement covers Lunenburg, Shelburne, Queens and Yarmouth counties. The winds could potentially cause damage to some tree limbs and cause power disruptions. Special weather warnings might be issued as the system approaches.

Fall Back: More Sleep, Time Change This Weekend

We will gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend when daylight savings time ends. People are reminded to set their clocks back one hour before they go to bed on Saturday night. Clocks are not the only items that need adjusting. Microwave ovens, car clocks, watches and other household devices may need to be turned back. More good news, if you have a smart phone, normally the device will automatically change the time for you. It's also a good opportunity to clean dryer vents to prevent fires, and change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke detectors should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.
