Bridgewater Mayor Receives Diamond Jubilee Medal

The mayor of Bridgewater has been awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee medal. Carroll Publicover received the award during the UNSM's fall conference Wednesday in Halifax. Publicover says the award means a lot to him.



Publicover has served as mayor since 2004 and will finish out his third term before municipal elections next month. Municipality of Lunenburg councillor Lee Nauss also received a medal during Wednesday's ceremony.

Students To Play Municipal Councillor At MODL

Students from grade 9 to 12 will take part in a municipal council meeting next week. Councillors from the Municipality of Lunenburg will host the students to promote local government during Municipal Awareness Week. Each councillor will be paired with a student to show them the ropes. The students will be able to sit at the council table and see how the decision process works during a council meeting on Tuesday. Municipal Awareness Week is a public awareness campaign which runs from September 24-30th.  It's also designed to try and boost voter turn out for the upcoming election.

Park View Holding Isolation Drill

Students at Park View Education Centre will be involved in an isolation drill this morning. The school will be locked down as part of the drill. Emergency crews may be on scene as part of the drill.

Overnight: Big Drop At The Pumps

Nova Scotia's regulator invoked the interrupter clause to reduce the price of gasoline in the province by six cents. The scarcely-used mechanism is employed when the daily market price for refined gas swings wildly between six to eight cents a litre before the province’s weekly gas price is set. Pump prices on the South Shore are now sitting at $1.373 cents a litre, down from $1.43 a litre on Wednesday. The pump prices, usually changed every Thursday at midnight.

Former School Board Official Seeks Seat In MODL

It could be one of the most interesting election races in the Municipality of Lunenburg. Former school board member Gary Mailman is running in District 9 against former provincial politician Carolyn Bolivar-Getson and John Harley. Mailman says he wants to represent a younger demographic on council.



Mailman says he wants to tackle issues like sustainability and attracting young professionals to the area. Councillor Arthur Young is vacating the seat and retiring after serving on council for 42 years. Elections will be held October 20.

LCLC Library Named After Margaret Hennigar

A former long-time editor of the local newspaper will have her name enshrined at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre. The multi-purpose centre's library will be named after Margaret Hennigar, who spent close to 40 years with Lighthouse Media Group. LCLC Chair Paul Belliveau says it was a good choice to name the library after Hennigar.



The family's contribution of $150,000 to the LCLC means they have naming rights for 10 years. Hennigar passed away in 2006 after battling cancer. The Margaret Hennigar Public Library will open in the new LCLC. The future library is expected to be about 9,000 square feet. The multi-purpose centre is on track to open next spring.

Chester: Three Way-Race For District 6 Seat

There is a three horse race shaping up in District 6 within the municipality of Chester. Incumbent Cheryl Scott is being opposed by Phillip Broome and Tina Conners for the seat which represents New Ross area residents. If re-elected, Scott says the Forties Road will remain a priority for her and council.





Scott has represented the district for the past ten years and says the campaign has been very positive to date. Municipal and school board elections will be held province wide on October 20th.

Liberals Nominate Harris In Chester-St.Margarets

A long-time resident of Chester will carry the Liberal banner for the party in a South Shore riding in the next provincial election. Tim Harris was given the nod during a meeting last night. He will run in the riding of Chester-St. Margaret which is currently held by Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse. In a press release, Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil says Harris has deep roots within the party as his father ran for the Liberals in 1963. Harris has been a resident of Chester since 1959 and is the owner of Tradewinds Realty.

New Bridgewater Doctor Accepting 250 Patients

Bridgewater's newest family doctor says her practice will take in 250 patients starting this morning. Dr. Kerry Parker along with a nurse practitioner will begin receiving new patients today by phone or by people walking into her family practice in the Medical Arts Building at 42 Glen Allan Drive, Suite 308. Parker considers 250 people to be a small first intake. But, she says she wants to ease into the new role.



Parker says she chose to bring her practice to Bridgewater because it provided the best option for lifestyle priorities and progressive models of primary health care. She says she is limiting today's intake to people who don't have a local health-care provider and live in the Lunenburg County area. Parker hopes the practice can serve up to 1,000 people through its first year. She will begin her first intake of new patients at 9am this morning. Video: Crushers Dump Jacks On Jenna Martin Night

A second period meltdown last night cost the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks a chance to earn their first win of the season. The Jacks gave up four goals in the middle frame, falling 7-2 to the Pictou County Weeks Crushers on Jenna Martin night in Bridgewater. Head Coach Terry Rhindress says it was a poor second period.



Jacob Conrad and Luke Warner scored for the Jacks while Jordan Lee stopped 40 shots in the loss. The Lumberjacks take on the Campbellton Tigers Friday night at 7pm in Bridgewater.

Police: Wanted Man Could Be In Middleton Area

Ottawa Police are reaching out to residents of Nova Scotia in hopes of locating a man wanted on a Canada wide warrant. Police say 26 year old Brandon Gaul is facing various charges including impaired driving causing death. The charges stem from a fatal collision in Ottawa in November of 2009. He is believed to be in the Annapolis County - Middleton area, where police say he may be working at a tattoo business. Gaul is Caucasian with a muscular build with short red/blond hair. He's about 5'9 and walks with a limp. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

LCLC Launches Construction Webcam

A new webcam has been set up for people to watch the ongoing construction at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre. Bird Construction has set up a camera on their trailer after a request from the LCLC's design committee. General Manager Kevin Benjamin says its another opportunity for people to follow the build.



Benjamin says the webcam has been in the works for the last couple months. The webcam just went live recently and you can watch the construction at http://lclc.ca/live-webcam.html .

Hotel Rooms Filling Up For Bluenose II Re-Launch

Hotels in Lunenburg are filling up quickly for the re-launch of the Bluenose II. At least five hotels have indicated rooms are filling up fast in advance of the historic event at the end of the month. Manager of the Lunenburg Arms, Jeff Green, says people from Atlantic Canada and elsewhere are coming to watch the famed schooner go in the water.



Other hotels say international guests have made reservations for the weekend. Green says they were completely booked in less than a day while other hotels said there rooms filled up in under three hours. The Bluenose II is expected to be re-launched between 7-9am Saturday September 29 when the tide is at its morning peak.

MacNeil Challenging Walker For Bridgewater Mayor Seat

The town of Bridgewater will have a new mayor after the October elections. David Walker, a long-time town politician will face Gary MacNeil, a first-time mayoralty candidate. Current Mayor Carroll Publicover has decided not to re-offer. MacNeil, who was born and raised in Bridgewater, moved out west and became a CEO for an oil manufacturing company before returning to his grassroots. He feels the timing is right to make a push for the mayor's seat.



MacNeil feels the downtown core and the LaHave River are two areas that could be better utilized to draw in tourists. Municipal elections will be held October 20.

New Tenants "Excellent Fit" For Lunenburg Academy

The future-use of Lunenburg Academy will feature a rich blend of artistic, creative and educational components. Mayor Laurence Mawhinney has announced the town has reached a tentative deal with the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance to occupy the historic former school. Mawhinney says the group was the preferred choice after a national call for proposals. Lunenburg Academy is nearly 120 years old and was turned back over to the town when Bluenose Academy opened earlier this spring. The mayor and representatives of the proposed new use will outline their vision for the academy in a media briefing later this week in Lunenburg. Mawhinney says it's an exciting proposal and believes it's an excellent fit for the academy.

Chester-Based Entrepreneur Running In District 1

An entrepreneur from East Chester is running for the District 1 seat on municipal council. Andre Veinotte operates Chester-based ABLE Engineering and will challenging incumbent Marshal Hector for the seat. Veinotte says his campaign will focus on rural economic development and support for local business.


Veinotte says he wants to bring a stronger voice on council with knowledge of operating a small business. The District 1 seat on Chester council represents residents in Blandford and the East Chester area.

South Shore Health CEO Welcomes New Family Doctor

The CEO for South Shore Health believes the addition of a family doctor to Bridgewater can help pave the way for a new collaborative health centre in the town. Dr. Kerry Parker will become part of the South Shore Family Health practice in the Medical Arts building on Glen Allan Drive. Dr. Peter Vaughan says adding a family doctor could help relieve some pressures.



Parker is expected to start accepting new patients on Wednesday. She will work with the existing two nurse practitioners to help deliver primary care.

School Board: 'False Alarm' At North Queens School

It's a false alarm at the North Queens School this afternoon. Various fire departments were dispatched to the school in Caledonia shortly before classes were dismissed to check things out.  Workers are currently replacing the roof at the school, but a spokeswoman from the local school board confirmed the false alarm earlier this afternoon. She says debris from the ongoing roof project interrupted a smoke detector causing the fire alarm to go off. Students were moved to the nearby fire hall for pick-up as a safety precaution. Classes will resume as scheduled tomorrow.

Clippers Win Pre-Season Junior 'C' Tournament

The Chester Clippers remain poised to have another strong year on the ice. The Clippers captured the Nova Scotia Junior 'C' Hockey League's annual pre-season tournament over the weekend at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.  The Clippers went 4-0 to win the banner, defeating Barrington 4-2 in the final. Chester continues its pre-season play Wednesday night against the Fundy Phantoms in Bedford. Scores from the weekend:

Funding For South Shore Fire Departments

The province is helping more than 50 fire departments and emergency response organizations purchase new equipment. MLA's Pam Birdsall and Gary Ramey announced funding for 12 projects in Lunenburg and Queens counties today. In New Germany, the volunteer fire department was awarded $14,000 to help replace their radio communications tower. Fire Chief Blair Lantz says it's an important announcement for their department.





The total cost of the project is $30,000 with the fire department chipping in the remaining funds for the project. South Shore fire departments in Bridgewater, Blockhouse, Chelsea, Blandford and Riverport also received funding today under the Emergency Services Provider Fund.

Nurse Practitioners No Longer Accepting New Patients

Bridgewater's two nurse practitioners have finished accepting new patients at this time. According to Liz Finney with South Shore Health, 120 people were lined up around 8:40 this morning to get a spot. The nurses were accepting 100 people today. Finney says the next intake date hasn't been confirmed yet.

Penny For The Park Campaign Hits Final Stretch

Just about two weeks left to get your pennies in to support Veteran's Memorial Park in Bridgewater. The Royal Canadian Legion in the town is collecting the one cent coin to keep the park in good shape and help pay for future projects. Chair of the park's committee, Roger Purnell, says the fundraising has gone well so far.



Fundraising ends on the last day of this month. Pennies can be dropped off at the Bridgewater Legion or J and S Paints in the Bridgewater Plaza.

Bulldogs Win Atlantic Baseball Championship

The Bridgewater Bulldogs Bantam 'AA' baseball team are Atlantic champions. The club made it look easy over the weekend, sporting an undefeated record and winning the final in convincing fashion, 12-2 over Dartmouth. Coach Dennis Woodworth says defense, pitching and an offensive strategy led to the win.



It's the second year in a row that a Bridgewater baseball team has brought home an Atlantic title. Woodworth calls it a special moment for the local association. He says the team will wrap up its season with a banquet in October.

Repairs Slow Traffic Along Old Highway 3 In Hebbville

Road repairs are underway on Highway 3 between Bridgewater and Hebbs Cross at the intersection with Highway 103 (Exit 14). Crews are repaving and also replacing a bridge along the 6 kilometer stretch of highway. The DOT advises the work will continue over the next couple of months and traffic may be reduced to one lane in sections where work is being done.

VIDEO: Coast Guard Vessel Wears War Hero's Name

Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Keith Ashfield announced the name of another new vessel in the Canadian Coast Guard fleet on Friday afternoon in Lunenburg. The vessel is being built at ABCO Industries Limited boatyard in Lunenburg. The Canadian Coast Guard ship has been named after decorated war veteran Stan Dudka - a native of New Glasgow. Dudka was also a distinguished federal fishery officer. He died in 2008 and was represented by members of his family at the ceremony.  The finishing touches on the CCGS S. Dudka are taking place at ABCO before the vessel is dispatched to work off Prince Edward Island. The Lunenburg based company was awarded the $2.9 million dollar contract to build the 14-metre vessel for the Canadian Coast Guard last year.

Gas Leak Last Night In Cookville!

A gas leak last evening resulted in the evacuation of the Irving convenience store in Cookville and the upper section of North Street in Bridgewater and highway 10 were closed to traffic. It happened around 7pm when employees at the Cookville Irving noticed a strong gas smell and called Northfield fire fighters. Oakhill fire fighters were also called in. It was later determined the leak was being caused by a faulty regulator in the Irving gas station heating system. Repairs were made and the store and surrounding area were given the OK around 10pm. No one was hurt.

Nurse Practitioners Accepting 100 New Patients

Bridgewater`s nurse practitioners will accept another 100 new patients on Monday morning. It`s the third intake for the two nurse practitioners who have already accepted 800 new patients since they opened their practice in May. Residents of Lunenburg and Queens who do not currently have a family doctor can request an appointment by phoning 527-4310 or visit their office in the Medical Arts Building on Glen Allen Drive. The nurse practitioners can handle up to 700 patients each at full capacity. The spaces are expected to fill up quickly and South Shore Health is asking for patience.

 

Serious Injuries After Boat Capsizes In Shelburne

Two men are recovering in hospital after their racing boat capsized in Lower Woods Harbour in Shelburne over the weekend. The incident occurred in waters off the Falls Point Road around 11 o'clock on Saturday morning. Barrington RCMP say spectators watching from the shoreline used a small speed boat to rescue the two men from the capsized vessel. The men, aged 49 and 55, were treated at the scene and then taken to hospital in Yarmouth. They are both from the Woods Harbour area. Police are investigating the incident.

Christmas Tree Crop Looks Good Despite Dry Summer

South Shore Christmas tree growers are looking forward to perhaps one of their best crops in recent memory. They're assessing their woodlots and getting ready to begin shipping to market later in the fall. President of the Lunenburg County Christmas Tree Producers Association, Bruce Turner, says the dry conditions this summer had little impact on woodlots.

Turner says this is a busy time right now for growers as they shore-up their markets for the coming season.



More than 50-million dollars is generated annually by the Christmas tree industry here.

MHL: Mariners Edge Lumberjacks 4-3 in Yarmouth

The Yarmouth Mariners have swept a season opening home and home series with the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks. The Mariners edged the Jacks 4-3 last night in Yarmouth. Colin Campbell led the Mariners with 2 goals and 1 assists. Michael Crawley led the Lumberjacks with 2 goals. Yarmouth's Travis Wilkins stopped 15 of 18 shots for the win while Billy Clarke of the 'Jacks stopped 22 of 26 shots in the loss.

UPDATED: RCMP Find Yarmouth Teen

RCMP in Yarmouth have located a 14-year-old Brooklyn girl who had been missing for more than two days. Police say Brianna Hayward was found in the downtown area of Yarmouth. She had been reported missing on Thursday night.

MHL: Mariners Spoil 'Jacks Home Opener

A disappointing opening night for the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks as the local Junior A club fell 4-0 to the visiting Yarmouth Mariners. Over 750 fans watched the fiesty affair which produced more than 100 penalty minutes. The lone bright spot was Jacks' goalie Jordan Lee who kept the score respectable with a 38 save performance. The clubs will go at it again tonight at the Fish Tank in Yarmouth. 

Queens Place To Host World Junior 'A' Exhibition Game

Some big news for Queens Place Emera Centre and the local Maritime Hockey League team. The 2012 World Junior 'A' Challenge Host Committee announced today that Liverpool will host the Czech Republic team for a two-day training camp November 1st and 2nd. An exhibition game between the Czechs and the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks is also planned for November 2nd. Tickets for the exhibition game will be available starting Monday for $15 on the Hockey Canada website or at Queens Place Emera Centre. The 2012 World Junior 'A' Challenge will be held November 5-11 in Yarmouth and features teams from the Czech Republic, Russia, United States, Switzerland, Canada West and Canada East.

Student's Car Damaged After Trip On Forties Road

A Lunenburg County university student is facing a hefty repair bill following a drive on the ragged Forties Road in Lunenburg County. The road from New Ross to East Dalhousie is uneven and features some deep divots and hasn't seen any new pavement in over a decade. Chester councillor Cheryl Scott says she received a letter from a young woman indicating her car sustained $500 in damage after a recent drive on the rough stretch of road.



Scott says the road is so bad, businesses are losing customers because no one wants to drive on the road. The Nova Scotia government has recognized the road needs new pavement but offered no timeline as to when that may happen.

Call For Action As Gas Prices Increase Again!

A big jump in South Shore gasoline prices overnight. Regular self serve is selling today for $1.44 per litre ... thats a 5 cent increase from yesterday. Diesel is ... down ... slightly to $1.35.6 .... thats a cent and a half lower. Heating oil is down by a similar amount. Canadian Taxpayers Federation Atlantic President Kevin Lacey tells us .... consumers are being taxed-to-death on gasoline and its making life even more difficult.



Lacey says the only winner in all of this is the government which collects millions in tax revenues from gasoline sales.

Bantam 'AA' Bulldogs In Cole Harbour For Atlantics

Another Bridgewater baseball team is getting the chance to bring home an Atlantic title. The Bantam 'AA' Bulldogs are in Cole Harbour this weekend for the Atlantic Championships, featuring the top teams from the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Bridgewater opens up play at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon against Dartmouth. The Bulldogs also take on Lancaster, New Brunswick Friday night at 8pm, PEI Saturday afternoon at 1pm and Gander, Newfoundland Sunday at 11am. The top two teams after the round robin will meet in the Championship game Sunday afternoon. The Peewee 'AAA' Bulldogs brought home bronze in their Atlantics last weekend in Newfoundland. Three Games In Three Days For Mustangs

A busy start to the regular season for the South Shore Canadian Tire Mustangs. The local major midget club is on the road Friday night in Berwick to open their regular season against the Valley Wildcats. The Mustangs then travel back to Bridgewater for a two game series against the Cape Breton West Islanders. The Stangs host the Islanders Saturday night at 8pm and Sunday morning at 10:45 at the Bridgewater Memorial Arena..

Chester: Old Stone Bridge Heritage Designation

The Old Stone Bridge in Chester will receive its official heritage designation during an event later today. MLA Denise Peterson-Rafuse will unveil a provincial heritage plaque at the little bridge on Victoria Street symbolizing its rich history. The bridge was designated a provincial heritage property in April. It's the first structure in the province to receive such designation that is not a building or property. The bridge dates back to the late 1800's and still sees regular traffic.

Ready, Set .. Here We Go - Jacks Hockey Returns!

It'll be a big night tonight at the Bridgewater Arena. The new Maritime Hockey League season is getting underway and the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks will be hitting the ice in their home opener. Action begins at 7 o'clock as the Lumberjacks host their rivals, the Yarmouth Mariners. During the exhibition season prior to tonight's game, the Jacks racked up two wins and two losses.
-- Next Tuesday night, the Lumberjacks organization will honour local Olympian, Jenna Martin. She recently competed at the 2012 London Olympics and set personal best times while qualifying just prior to the games. Martin will be honoured during the game at the Bridgewater Arena when the Jacks host Pictou at 7:30 (Tuesday night).

Big Hike In South Shore Gasoline Prices

Hope you topped up your gas tank before midnight last night. As expected, gasoline prices at South Shore pumps have taken a hike this morning. Following on the heals of a similar increase in New Brunswick the night before, this province's utility and review board set prices overnight here. Regular self serve is selling this morning for a dollar-44 a litre ... thats a 5 cent increase from yesterday. Diesel is down though to a dollar-35-point 6 .... thats a cent and a half lower. Heating oil is down by a similar amount.

MODL Forwards Road Concern To The Province

A request to to have a Lunenburg County road surveyed will go through the province. The Municipality of Lunenburg received information from residents in Barss Corner and Margaretsville asking them to help improve conditions of the Oakhill Public Road from Walburne Road to West Whales Lake. The residents are worried about the lack of public access to the lake. Municipality of Lunenburg mayor Don Downe says their hands are tied.



Downe says the municipality will write a letter on behalf of the residents to the Department of Transportation to outline their concerns.

Chester Warden Receives Diamond Jubilee Medal

It's obvious members of council and staff in Chester can keep a secret. Long time warden Allen Webber was presented with a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal in a surprise presentation during council this morning. Deputy Warden Floyd Shatford says Webber is a deserving recipient after committing over three decades of his life to Chester through his role as a councillor and warden.However, Shatford says they wanted it to be a surprise.




Webber says he is grateful and humbled by the recognition from his colleagues. The medal serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians and was created to recognize the Queens 60th anniversary of her accession to the Throne.

Chester: Armstrong Brings Hard Work Approach

The incumbent candidate in the village of Chester says he'll continue to bring a work boots and lunch pail approach to the council table. Brad Armstrong is a carpenter by trade and says he wants to continue working hard on behalf of the residents in the village. Armstrong is being contested for the District 3 seat by local chamber of commerce president Ben Wiper. Armstrong believes a councillor needs to be available and accessible at all times and says he's done his best to meet those requirements.



Armstrong was first elected in 2008 and is looking for his second term. He feels his experience and dedication will be an asset on the next council.

Meisner Wants Increased Transparency At MODL

A mayoralty candidate for the Municipality of Lunenburg believes there should be more openness and transparency around the council table. Kirk Meisner has announced he will challenge Don Downe for the mayor's seat in municipal elections next month. Meisner admits he has no political background but spent 23 years involved with the onshore and offshore gas industries. He feels council has been tight-lipped about the LCLC.



Meisner also believes more could be done to attract young families to the municipality. Elections will be held October 20 province-wide.

Long-time Resident Running For Bridgewater Council

A lifelong resident of Bridgewater is going after a seat on council. Dennis Woodworth has lived in the town since 1971 and says the timing is right to represent the people. He hopes residents will take advantage of their right to vote.



Woodworth feels he would be best utilized at the council level because of his volunteer service and business experience in the town. Eleven other candidates are vying for a seat when e-voting opens October 11 in Bridgewater.

South Shore Gasoline Prices Expected To Increase

While gasoline prices in many parts of the country are expected to fall tonight, here on the South Shore be prepared for prices to actually rise above the dollar-forty a litre mark. For the sixth week in a row, the price of gas is up in New Brunswick today and thats usually an indication of what may happen here when prices are set late tonight. The New Brunswick energy and utilities board has increased regular self-serve almost five cents to a new top price of $1.40.8 a litre. The price of both furnace oil and diesel have fallen this week.

Bridgewater Adopts Healthy Eating Policy

It's an initiative to try and get people to choose healthy snacks over junk food. The town of Bridgewater has adopted a policy to increase the amount of nutritional foods provided in recreation and municipal settings. The new policy affects all recreation facilities, events, fundraisers and vending machines on properties in the town. The plan will be implemented in two phases; the first two years will focus on providing mostly nutritional foods with other options to choose from. After two years, there would be an evaluation with a move to increase the amount of nutritional foods while cutting down on unhealthy items. Meetings will be scheduled with staff and canteen operators to renegotiate contracts to include the healthier foods.

Municipal and School Board elections will be held throughout the province next month. CKBW/HANK FM is putting a concentrated focus and effort on bringing its listeners local coverage from their communities around the South Shore. Advance polling days vary between each municipal unit. Polling day is October 20th. Voting will open at 8AM and close at 7PM. We will have live election night coverage on CKBW beginning when the polls close.

Election Candidates List: Region of Queens

Municipal and School Board elections will be held throughout the province next month. CKBW/HANK FM is putting a concentrated focus and effort on bringing its listeners local coverage from their communities around the South Shore. In the Region of Queen, advanced polls will be held October 11th and October 16th. Polling day is October 20th. Polls will open at 8AM and close at 7PM. We will have live election night coverage on CKBW beginning when the polls close.
