Bridgewater: Town Moving Ahead With New Logo

Bridgewater is moving ahead with plans to tweak a proposed new logo. The town has agreed to spend up to $5,000 to give its logo a facelift.  The proposed logo is a circle that includes the colours green, white and blue. The white represents the LaHave River while the green promotes sustainability and the blue represents the sky. Mayor David Walker says the colours remain up for discussion.



Walker says council hasn't made up its mind on the colours, which could change the final design. The logo would be placed on everything including town vehicles, signs welcoming people to the town and bills. Mayor David Walker welcomes the change.

The money is pre-approved from next year's budget. 

Emergency Officials Meet To Discuss Flooding

Emergency management officials in Lunenburg County are meeting to discuss a potential action plan after the region was hit with 40 to 50 millimetres of rain. A number of people are dealing with flooded basements. Officials are also dealing flooding on road ways. We'll update this story when we have more information.

Fatal Crash In New Germany

Police say a 60 year-old was killed when his car slammed into the ditch in New Germany. The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Mounties say the man was from Pinehurst. A section of Highway 10 was shut down four more than four hours while investigators checked out the scene. Road conditions were poor at the time of the crash. However, police did not say if that was a factor.

Storm Causes Flooding, Closes Schools

It's a messy morning. The South Shore Regional School Board has cancelled classes in Lunenburg and Queens Counties. Also, no classes at the Waldorf school in Blockhouse or the French School in Cookville. Schools under the Tri-County Regional School Board are open. However, buses will not travel on gravel roads. More rain is also expected today, another 20 to 30 mm of rain is in the forecast before changing to flurries later this afternoon. Some South Shore residents are reporting basement flooding as result of all the rain overnight. Meanwhile, RCMP are reminding motorist to reduce speeds in case of hydroplaning. There was a single vehicle crash this morning on Highway 10. A section of the highway is closed near Guppy's Restaurant in New Germany. No other details on the crash have been released. About 2,500 Nova Scotia Power custmers are in the dark this morning, outages are being reported in Digby, Halifax and Sydney.

Martin, Duckworth Receive Funding From New Program

A pair of South Shore athletes will benefit from funding for Atlantic Canadian Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. The Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic and several businesses have launched Elevate, a program providing assistance to athletes striving for the international podium. Snowboarder Alex Duckworth from Kingsburg and Bridgewater's Jenna Martin are among seven athletes from Nova Scotia and P.E.I. receiving funding. The groups have announced $100,000 in funding will be provided annually over the next four years towards the program. Money will be used to access training facilities, performance professionals, nutritional guidance, leadership and mentoring.

Gutsy Walk Coming To Bridgewater

A walk targeting the end of Inflammatory Bowel Disease is coming to Bridgewater. Gutsy Walk is Crohn's and Colitis Canada's largest national fundraising event. It will be held in Bridgewater and nationwide later this spring. Jody O'Donnell is chair of the local walk. He says IBD is not easy to live with.



O'Donnell's son suffers from Crohn's and he wanted to bring the walk to Bridgewater to help raise awareness. Over 66 events were held last year, helping raise $2.3-million nationwide. The Bridgewater event will be a five kilometre walk or run beginning at Shipyard's Landing June 8. There are hopes it will raise $10,000. Radiothon Returns For Fourth Year

Another year and the same great cause for the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore. Friday will mark the fourth annual 'Gift for the Heart' radiothon on CKBW and HANK-FM. This year the goal is to raise $100,000 to help purchase a new mobile x-ray unit. Development officer Bernadette Jordan says they're hoping to build off of last year.



Jordan says there are roughly 20 items people can bid on during the live auction. More than 40 volunteers will be involved when the radiothon goes from 8am until 6pm Friday morning. If you're looking to make a donation, you can call 541-3246 or 1-844-842-3246.

EMO Warns: Be Prepared For Possible Flooding

A major rain and wind storm is set to pound the South Shore The Emergency Management Office is warning of potential flooding due to significant rainfall. Environment Canada is forecasting roughly 5cm of snow and between 40 and 50mm of rain. Wind gust will be as high as 100 km/h along parts of the coast. EMO spokesperson Steve Mills says he's been reminding communities to have their storm drains free of ice and snow.



Nova Scotia Power crews will be on standby in case of possible outages due to the wind. The storm should taper by Friday morning.

Gas Prices May Rise Tonight

With word of an increase this morning in gasoline prices in New Brunswick, many South Shore residents will likely be filling up today at the pumps. You can expect gas prices to probably rise overnight across the province including along the South Shore by a couple of cents. Prices are up in New Brunswick today with regular self serve leading the way with a 2.5 cent increase per litre. Diesel is also up by a couple of cents in New Brunswick.

Search In North River Leads To Drug Charges

A man is facing drug charges after police searched a home earlier this week in North River. Police say they found cocaine, ecstasy or MDMA, some pot, cash and firearms. A 30 year old Lunenburg County man is facing possession and trafficking charges. He's also been charged with unsafe storage of a firearm. The matter will be before a judge April 9.

No End To Old Man Winter's "Hits"

Get set for another dose of unrelenting winter weather. Another storm is headed our way later today. This one will be a huge rain and wind event! Snow will begin here late this afternoon followed fairly quickly by rain, and lots of it, and the wind gusts will top 100km/hr by times. Meanwhile, Ming Szto of Environment Canada tells us yet another storm will be moving in on Saturday into Sunday.



There are some indications we could get about 15 centimeters of snow here on the South Shore Saturday night.

Resident Concerned About Speed In East Chester Area

RCMP will use radar and increased patrols to discourage motorists from speeding in the East Chester area. However, it might not be enough. A local resident has requested the Municipality of Chester to change the speed zone along Highway 3 from 80km/h to 50 or 60km/h. Warden Allen Webber says it's a request for the province's Department of Transportation.



Webber expects a response over the next few months.

Burnout Predicted For Liverpool Lab Technicians

Two, full-time hospital lab technicians in Liverpool are being transferred to Bridgewater. South Shore Health says its to help alleviate a shortage of 4-full time and 1 part-timer in the lab at South Shore Regional Hospital. However, Canadian Union of Public Employees local President Dianne Frittenburg says moving them out of Queens General makes little sense.



Frittenburg says the added workload on the remaining 3 lab techs at Queens General will lead to burnout and more sick time. She's requesting a meeting with South Shore Health to discuss options. Frittenburg says the union has been told the transfers will take place in March. She also fears possible closure of the Queens General Hospital lab sometime in the future.

UPDATED: Duckworth Reacts To Olympic Results

There will be no Olympic medals coming to Kingsburg, but there will be a proud Olympian returning home. Alex Duckworth finished 17th in the women's snowboarding halfpipe event in Sochi, Russia after failing to qualify for the finals. Duckworth says she has no regrets after stumbling during her two semi-final runs.



Duckworth says she's proud of the support she received from the South Shore community along with residents across the province and country.

She plans to be a spectator for the rest of the Olympics and hopes to meet fellow Nova Scotian Sidney Crosby.

BREAKING: Duckworth Advances To Olympic Semi-Finals

Kingsburg's Alex Duckworth advanced to the semi-finals of the women's half-pipe snowboarding event in Sochi, Russia. The 26-year-old had a clean second run, scoring a 69.75. She finished 7th overall in the first heat. Duckworth scored a 42.25 on her first run after stumbling near the end. Duckworth was on twitter before competing saying she was " Giggly, excited and jacked up on nerves." Now, she is one step away from making it to the finals and challenging for a medal. Mustangs Eliminate Valley After Game 5 Victory

The Charlie's Pizza South Shore Mustangs are heading to the next round of the playoffs. Travis Parks scored on a third period penalty shot, which held up for the game winner as the Mustangs beat the Valley Wildcats 4-3 Tuesday night in Berwick. The Mustangs won the series four games to one. Jordan Messenger and Mitchell Baker added a goal and an assist while Christian Tufts added the other goal. Nick Dawe turned aside 43 shots. The Mustangs are waiting for other series' to finish to determine who will be their next opponent.

South Shore: Another Storm Expected Thursday

Another large winter storm is expected to pound the region this week. However, instead of the "regular" Wednesday storm, this system will arrive on Thursday. Environment Canada is advising residents to pay attention to the weather as the storm approaches the region.  The last two mid-week storms to hit the South Shore carried about 20 centimetres of snow. Three weeks ago an intense blizzard arrived mid-week and brought about 25 centimetres of snow.

Bridgewater: Mayor Concerned About Security At Town Hall

Bridgewater's mayor wants to tighten down security at town hall. David Walker says he's concerned about staff safety because people are able to walk into the building freely without checking in. He says the town has discussed the issue for years but hasn't done anything about it. Walker would like to see identification tags used to access parts of the building.



Walker says he hopes to have a meeting this week to talk about the issue. He also hopes to add the item to the upcoming budget talks for 2014-15.

Bridgewater: Snow Removal Projected "In The Red"

Snow removal costs are expected to be in the red for the town of Bridgewater. Director of Finance, Dawn Kaizer, says they're currently projecting snow removal to be $91,000 over budget. However, there is still lots of winter remaining and more snow in the forecast for this week. Kaizer remains optimistic things will be alright.


The snow removal budget is $356,000 and is projected to be at $447,000 at last look. Kaizer says a decision will be made to tap into the snow reserve fund once final budget numbers are known.

How To Make Life Easier For The South Shore's Learning Disabled

South Shore parents of students with learning disabilities will meet tomorrow night (Wednesday) with officials who are knowledgeable on the subject. The school board will hold an information night to explain what LD is all about and how better to support students afflicted by it. There are currently 460 students diagnosed as learning disabled within the local school system. Cindy Kowalyk is an LD Services facilitator. She says Ipads and similar high-tech devices are helping make things easier for students.



Some parents are providing the tablets themselves for their children. Others are being donated. Its all in the name of making life easier for these kids who face their disability every day. Wednesday evening's information meeting begins at 6:30 at South Queens Middle School in Liverpool.

Duckworth Set To Compete At Olympics

The dream of competing at the Olympics will soon be realized for Alex Duckworth. The 26-year-old from Kingsburg will take on the best in the world in the women's snowboarding half-pipe event. The qualification round begins at 6 o'clock local time Wednesday morning. She will compete in the first heat. It's scheduled to be shown on Rogers Sportsnet. Duckworth is ranked as the top Canadian and is competing at the Olympics for the first time. She was an alternate for the 2010 games in Vancouver. If she qualifies for the semi-finals, she will compete again at 11am local time Wednesday morning. Haven Returns For Fifth Season

A popular television show based out of Chester is returning and the warden couldn't be happier. Haven is coming back for a fifth season with 13 episodes expected to air this fall and another 13 in 2015. The show employs some local residents. The production also helps bring in $1-million to the area. Allen Webber says the support adds up.


Webber says it also provides a tourism boost with the television program showcasing parts of the municipality. Season four of the supernatural drama series averaged 2.3 million total weekly viewers.

Lunenburg: Unexpected ER Closure

The emergency room at Fishermen's Hospital in Lunenburg will close at 5:00p.m. It's an unexpected closure due to nursing shortages. The ER will re-open tomorrow morning at 7:30a.m. Emergency services will resume at the hospital at that time.

Funding Will Hire New Staff For Sexual Abuse Victims

Victims of sexual abuse will have better options to receive support in Lunenburg County. The Nova Scotia government has unveiled $110,000 in funding for community based projects to help those who have been sexually abused. Each organization will receive $55,000 a year for the next two years. Elizabeth Bailey is with the Second Story Women's Centre in Lunenburg. She says the funding will help hire staff to work in the hospital.



Bailey says offering rape kits in hospitals is an alternative option for those not ready to talk to police. Other community groups receiving funding include The Red Door in Kentville and Tri-County Women's Centre in Yarmouth.

Mahone Bay: Mayor Pleased With Wind Farm Progress

A cheaper way of supplying electricity to residents of Mahone Bay is gaining momentum. The town, along with Berwick and Antigonish have set up a joint services board to run a wind farm in Ellershouse in West Hants. The towns have also submitted an application to Nova Scotia Power for backup and spill opportunities. Mahone Bay Mayor Joe Feeney says this would give them a few options.



Feeney says the partnership is working towards a development agreement with the Municipality of West Hants on the proposed 16 mega-watt, seven turbine wind farm. He expects there would be some cost-savings once its complete. Minas Basin Pulp and Power will develop the project. Feeney estimates the project with cost between 21 and $25-million. It could be online in 2015.

PC Leader Rejuvenated After Weekend Party Vote

There is overwhelming party support for Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservative opposition leader! At the PC Party's annual convention over the weekend, Jamie Baillie underwent a required leadership review and he was re-acclaimed by a whopping 95 percent of party members. Baillie says the show of support, especially from the South Shore, is humbling and it has re-energized him.



Its the first time the province's tories have met since last fall's election when gains were made at the polls, becoming the Official Opposition in the Legislature. A leadership review wasn't actually required until 2015 but Baillie wanted it early following the October 8, 2013 provincial election.

Hydraulic Pump Creates More Delays For LaHave Ferry

Problems with a hydraulic pump has created more delays for the LaHave River Ferry. The Department of Transportation says they noticed the pump wasn't working properly last week during sea trials. The pump helps operate the ferry's ramp. A department spokesperson says the equipment now has to be inspected and repaired, then re-installed and undergo more sea trials. The department is apologizing for the inconvenience and thanking residents for their patience. They hope to have it up and running again by the end of the week. The ferry has been out of commission since January 3rd.

Valley Stays Alive In Series With Mustangs

The Valley Wildcats have avoided play-off elimination. They picked up a 4-3 win Sunday night over the Charlie's Pizza South Shore Mustangs. Keith Getson scored twice and Alex Nauss added the other for the South Shore squad while Colby Muise turned aside 36 shots in nets. The Mustangs lead the best-of-seven series three games to one. The two teams will play game five Tuesday night in Berwick.

Mustangs Look To Sweep Valley In Playoff Series

The Charlie's Pizza South Shore Mustangs are one win away from advancing to the next round of the playoffs. Alex Nauss scored the overtime winner as the Mustangs defeated the Valley Wildcats 5-4 in game three on Saturday night in Bridgewater. The Mustangs lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. They go for the sweep this afternoon at 5pm at the Clearwater Seafoods Arena.

Do You Have A Retirement Financial Plan Ready?

A survey of Atlantic Canadians approaching retirement age shows more than half of them are going to work past age 65. The Harris-Decima survey for Scotiabank shows 4 of 10 plan to work out of financial need. In a CKBW and HANK-FM News interview, Scotiabank senior financial planner Islay McGlynn says going into retirement blinded is not a good idea! She says we all need to sit down with a financial planner and prepare.



McGlynn tells us planning ahead will make life a lot easier once you do decide to retire.



According to the survey, only 14 percent of Atlantic Canadians have a written financial plan already in place.
Thats 13 percent lower than the national figure of 27 percent.

Bridgewater: Cupcakes To Be Handed Out For Town's Birthday

A local town is getting ready to turn 115-years-old. Bridgewater is preparing for its celebrations. They became an incorporated town on February 13, 1899, a month after a fire completely destroyed the downtown core. The town will mark their 115th year by handing out small cupcakes to the community. Mayor David Walker says it's meant to be a fun day.



Thousands of the cupcakes will be handed out on Valentine's Day between 11am and 2pm.

Fire Destroys Grimm Road Home And Garage

A home is completely destroyed after a fire Saturday evening in Grimms Settlement. Lunenburg and District Fire Chief Darren Romkey says the blaze happened around 6:45pm at the Grimm Road home. He says the home and a garage were fully engulfed when they arrived on scene. Members from Dayspring, Riverport and Bridgewater fire departments also responded to the call while four others were put on standby. Romkey says one person was home at the time and managed to get out safely. The chief believes the fire started in the home's dryer and quickly spread. Nova Scotia Power, RCMP, EHS and the Department of Transportation were also called to the scene.

Charge Laid After Car Crashes Into School Bus

Police are laying a charge after a school bus and car collided in a intersection earlier this week in Bridgewater. Police say the driver of the car failed to stop at a red light. The crash occurred during a snow storm on Wednesday. There were roughly 20 students on board. Police say there were not any injuries. The matter will be before a judge on April 11.

Flag Signings Help Raise Almost $3,000 For Olympian Duckworth

Residents of Lunenburg County have stepped up in support of Olympian Alex Duckworth. People donated almost $887.50 as part of a week-long flag signings at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre. The money is being added to the $2,000 contributed to Duckworth by the town of Bridgewater and Municipality of Lunenburg. Mayor Don Downe feels the real boost comes from the people.



Downe will present the signed flags and money to Duckworth's parents Friday night before they travel to Sochi, Russia to watch their daughter compete. The 26-year-old Duckworth hits the half-pipe Wednesday February 12. She will compete at 6am our time. If she qualifies for the semi-finals, she will be back on the hill at 11am. Bridgewater: Residents Get Early Look At Off-Leash Park

Bridgewater residents are encouraged to grab their dog and bring them to Generations Active Park on Saturday. An orientation will be held focusing on the new off-leash site. The park is moving forward and is currently seeking sponsorship or fundraising opportunities. Town Councillor Andrew Tanner says the meeting will help keep people in the loop.



Tanner says he's optimistic the park will be ready for use sometime this spring. People are asked to gather in the parking lot of HB Studios. The meeting will be held at 10am Saturday morning.

Pharmacy Flu Shots Exceed Expectations

As the flu season begins to wind down, health officials in Nova Scotia are taking stock of the success of the flu vaccine program. Health Minister Leo Glavine tells us allowing pharmacies to give flu shots has exceeded all expectations.



It was originally projected 20-thousand shots might be given by drug stores province-wide. That number has ballooned to almost 75-thousand.

Mustangs Resume Playoff Series With Valley

A pivotal game three for the Charlie's Pizza South Shore Mustangs on Saturday night. The Mustangs can take a strangle-hold in their playoff series against the Valley Wildcats with a win. The South Shore club leads the best-of-seven, two games to none. It's also minor hockey appreciation weekend for the Mustangs. Kids who wear their team jerseys get into the games for free. Game three goes Saturday night at 8:30. Game four will be played Sunday afternoon at 5pm. Both games are at the Clearwater Seafoods Arena.

Lower Gas Prices

A bit of a surprise at the gas pumps this morning! Prices are actually down some. Regular self serve down by almost a cent to $1.34 at South Shore pumps. High test is at $1.42.9. Diesel is also lower this morning, selling at many spots at $1.49.8.

Mock Exercise Tests Emergency Organization's Preparedness

It's considered the best way to prepare for any future emergencies. The Nova Scotia Emergency Measures Office set up mock exercises simulating five major disasters including a train derailment and a six-car motor vehicle accident involving a fatality. The exercises put officials with Lunenburg County's Regional Emergency Measures Organization under the gun. Spokesperson John Collyer says it's important for them to prepare for any situation.



The towns of Bridgewater and Mahone Bay along with the Municipalities of Chester and Lunenburg make up the local REMO outfit. He says EMO will issue a report back to them, evaluating how they reacted in the situations and offering advice to help them improve. Collyer is reminding all local residents to have enough supplies to survive for 72 hours in case there is an emergency. For details on what should be included in an emergency kit, click here .

Kippers School Of Gymnastics Celebrating 40 Years

Forty years and counting for Kippers School of Gymnastics. The Bridgewater club will hold an open house at their space inside the Gateway Plaza Mall on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The open house is an opportunity for the public to learn more information on programs being offered or to watch demonstrations by gymnasts and cheerleaders. The host and current coach, Deanne Oickle-Conrad, says there are benefits with their programs.



Oickle-Conrad says the club has been through a lot in 40 years and this event is a chance to say thank you and get more people involved.

Landmark South Shore Church Expanding

At a time when many Nova Scotia churches are closing because of declining congregations, a South Shore House of Worship is actually expanding! The congregation at the 94 year old Bridgewater Baptist Church on King Street has ambitious plans for a 5.2 million dollar new building. They've just about reached the goal and approval's been given for the project. Pastor, Dr. Brian MacArthur, tells us expanding wouldn't be possible without a growing and dynamic community behind it.



Dr. MacArthur also says the new facility will help in the church's expanding community outreach.



The new Bridgewater Baptist will rise on a parcel of already-purchased land just off Glen Allen Drive. Its hoped to be ready for parishoners in time for Easter next year (2015).

Bridgewater: Town Adds Kinsmen Field To Budget Talks

The future of Kinsmen Field in Bridgewater will be put to the test this spring. The town must decide if it will contribute money towards fixing drainage at the field in its upcoming budget. Mayor David Walker says that could cost upwards of $70,000.




The town already has $30,000 set aside for the work following last summer's Kraft Celebration Tour. Fixing up the field is part of a proposed three phase project which includes adding a storm sewer system on Oak Street to intercept water from flowing onto the field. The cost to do that is around $70,000. The three phase project could cost as much as $200,000 to complete.

Gasoline Prices May Rise Tonight

Gas prices may increase yet again tonight at South Shore pumps after the utility and review board sets the week's rates. In New Brunswick today, prices there are up about a cent for both regular self serve gas and diesel. The average price this morning is $1.32.4 a litre for regular gas. If there's a similar increase here tonight, the price will be almost $1.36 a litre for regular.

The Storm Is Over And The Cleanup Is On

The snow has ended, another day is here, its sunny but there is still a mess to be dealt with today. About 20 cm of snow fell on the South Shore yesterday and this morning the cleanup is underway. If you're driving, do so carefully! All roads are snow-covered and slippery!
Things are returning to normal at the Halifax airport this morning following yesterday's slew of delays and cancellations. As far as school is concerned, Tri-County schools are closed for the day. All South Shore schools are open with the exception of the Waldorf School and the Forest Heights family of schools. Also, school buses are following the back-road closure plan. In the Valley, Annapolis County schools are closed. Kings/West Hants schools are open but bus drivers are using discretion on the side roads.

Bridgewater: No Injuries In School Bus Crash

No one was hurt when a school bus and another vehicle collided yesterday afternoon at an intersection in Bridgewater. It happened at York Street and Victoria Road during the height of the snow storm. There were young children on the bus at the time but they were not injured. They were loaded aboard another bus and taken home for the day. No word on any charges related to the crash.

Mahone Bay Looking To Increase Water Rates

The town of Mahone Bay is looking to increase its water rates. Council has applied for a 6.7 per cent hike annually for the next three years. Mayor Joe Feeney says the town's utility ended last year in a deficit of close to $240,000. He says changes need to be made.



Feeney says the province's Utility and Review Board will hold a rate increase hearing in Mahone Bay around the end of April.

Queens RCMP Search For Stolen Car

Queens County RCMP are on the lookout for a stolen vehicle. The Mounties says a 2000 silver pontiac grand am was stolen sometime between midnight and 4am Tuesday morning from a home in Milton. Corporal Victor Whalen says the Nova Scotia license plate is DDD 677. Anyone with information can contact Queens RCMP or crime stoppers.

Lunenburg: Winter Storm Parking Advisory Imposed

It's probably not a good idea to park your vehicle for a long time on the streets of Lunenburg. A winter parking advisory has been imposed in the town. The region is expected to receive up to 25 centimetres of snow over the next 24 hours. Corporal Bill Wilcox of the Lunenburg RCMP says they want to make sure the roads can be cleared properly.



Wilcox says those who don't follow the advisory can be given a ticket and towed. He says they had to tow more than 14 vehicles during the past two snow storms.

Fears Lunenburg Man Drowned In Saskatchewan River

There are fears a 28 year Lunenburg man has drowned after falling into a river in Saskatchewan. Greg MacIntosh has been missing since leaving a bar last Saturday. McIntosh and his friends were celebrating his upcoming wedding in Saskatoon. He left the bar around midnight and hasn't been seen since. The same night rescue crews were called after two witnesses reported seeing a person walking on the South Saskatchewan River who suddenly disappeared into the water. MacIntosh was working as an electrician and living out west for the past four years. He was set to get married on February 15. Police are still interviewing witnesses and are investigating both incidents separately.

Ferry Loss Upsetting Residents: Councillor

The loss of the LaHave River Ferry has stretched into over a month. The ferry has been out of operation since it broke free from its cable during a wind and snowstorm on January 3. Since then, crews have been working to fix the vessel and get it back into service as quickly as possible. The councillor representing West LaHave, Martin Bell, says some residents are beginning to get tired of the extra drive.



Bell says he hopes the ferry will return to serve residents sooner rather than later. A spokesperson with the Department of Transportation is now saying it could be the end of this week before the ferry resumes operations.
