Lunenburg Mayoralty Candidate Says She Has The Right Stuff

 For the first time in more than a generation, the municipal election ballot in Lunenburg will "not" contain the name ... Laurence Mawhinney! The venerable mayor of 33 years is retiring and "that" has some people in the town concerned about life after the MaWhinney era. However, mayoralty candidate Rachel Bailey says no fears .... she's ready to step up to the plate and take-on the challenge.



Bailey has experience on Lunenburg town council and as deputy-mayor. Ron Stockton is the other candidate seeking to replace Laurence MaWhinney. Election day is October 20th.

Health Authority Earns Highest Accreditation Level

South Shore Health has received a distinction few organizations can boast about. The authority has been accredited with exemplary standing. It's the highest honour possible from Accreditation Canada. CEO for South Shore Health, Peter Vaughan, says staff is well-deserving of the honour.



Vaughan says they moved up to exemplary standing after developing strategies to address issues in patient identification and client and families role in safety. He says this is the first time South Shore Health has received the recognition.

Yarmouth Company Providing South Shore Shuttle

A surprising twist came out of Thursday night's Utility and Review Board hearing in Bridgewater on a new regional bus service. Trius Tours was looking to abandon their service on the South Shore, but instead, Yarmouth-based Bernie's Shuttle Service has stepped up and will carry-on the service. The company has one eight-passenger and two six-passenger vehicles to service the route to Halifax. Owner Bernie Melanson says it's a new challenge.



Meanwhile, Trius Tours owner, Mike Cassidy, says the timing of Acadian Lines decision to shut down its business played a factor in abandoning service to the South Shore.



Melanson says its too early to say where the route will stop or how much it will cost. He looks forward to providing the service and feels its important to local residents.

Gas Prices Fall (& Rise) At South Shore Pumps

As expected, gasoline prices have decreased overnight on the South Shore. One particular grade is up though. While regular self serve is down almost 4.5 cents a litre, diesel is up almost 3 cents. Self serve regular is a dollar-37-point-3 while diesel is selling at a dollar-38. High test gas is also down a bit this morning.

Shelburne Candidate Seeks Economic Revival

A candidate for mayor in the Town of Shelburne is making economic growth a keystone of her campaign. Karen Mattatall is a veteran of the Tri-County School Board and a member of town council. She says the area economy is in bad shape with too many young people moving away for jobs when they should be able to get one locally.



Mattatall says she wants to have an open approach to the mayor's office with public consultations in the decision-making process. Also running for mayor in the October 20th elections are incumbent Al Delaney, former mayor Parker Comeau and town councillor Bob Sinden.

Controversy Surrounds MODL Mayoral Debate

There's some controversy over a decision by the hosts of last night's mayoral debate at Park View Education Centre. Kirk Meisner is seeking the mayor's chair in the Municipality of Lunenburg but wasn't able to attend last night's debate because he had a campaign fundraiser on the same night. Instead, it was agreed Meisner's campaign manager - Lydia Early - would take his place but a last minute decision from the Bridgewater and Area Chamber of Commerce nixed that from happening. Early says she was blind sided by the move because the two parties had agreed to have a substitute represent the Meisner camp.



Early wants an apology from the BACC. She feel the chamber was pressured into making the decision. Meisner is taking on Don Downe for the position - who was allowed to participate in the debate. Mayoral candidates for the Town of Bridgewater - David Walker and Gary MacNeil - also squared off at the event.

Power Outage Affecting Bridgewater Area

Close to 2,000 people are without power in the Bridgewater-area at this time. Nova Scotia Power is reporting outages in New Germany, East Dalhousie, Springfield, Lower Cornwall and West Northfield. The outage happened just before 11am this morning. NSP is currently investigating the matter. They expect power to be restored by 1pm this afternoon. New Germany schools will be dismissing at noon due to the power outage.

Trius Tours Looking To Abandon South Shore Service

The South Shore could soon lose its lone bus service connecting it to the HRM. Trius Tours has submitted an application to abandon its service between Yarmouth and Halifax. A Utility and Review Board Hearing will be held in Bridgewater tonight to discuss the issue and focus on a new regional service. Municipality of Lunenburg Mayor Don Downe says they're opposed to the change.



Phone calls from our newsroom to reach Trius Tours owner Mike Cassidy have been unsuccessful. The hearing will be held at 7pm this evening at Bridgewater town hall.

Gasoline Prices May Drop Tomorrow

This may bode well for gasoline prices on the South Shore come tomorrow morning. In New Brunswick today, gas prices there are "down" considerably. The cost of regular self-serve dropped overnight by more than five cents, to just over a-dollar-35 a litre. That's after an increase last week of more than six cents a litre. Prices here on the South Shore also jumped last week by more than 4 cents a litre.

Shelburne RCMP Seize Contraband Cigarettes

Shelburne County RCMP have played a helping hand in seizing a large quantity of contraband cigarettes. Local members along with Colchester County RCMP apprehended more than 138,000 cigarettes after stopping a vehicle outside Truro late Tuesday night. Police also seized a 2007 Chevy Impala. Two men have been arrested and are scheduled to appear in Shelburne Provincial Court January 16, 2013.

VIDEO: School Board Candidates Forum In Queens

Queens County school board candidates voiced their opinions on several issues during a candidates forum Wednesday night at Liverpool High School. Four of the five candidates showed up to meet members of the public while Butch MacLeod was unavailable due to illness. The role of the school board, school review and school start times were some of the topics being talked about. Elliott Payzant says schools could open later.



Another candidate, Allan Foster, agrees.



The four candidates were also greeted with questions about representing the county, the idea of school board being televised and thoughts on in-camera sessions. Karen Ohrt says she wouldn't have a problem with meetings being video-taped or streamed online.

Roughly 20 people showed up to hear what the candidates had to say. School board elections will be held October 20.

Police: No Charges After Toddler Run Over

Bridgewater Police won't lay charges after a four-year-old boy was run over by a vehicle. Chief John Collyer says their investigation into Sunday's incident on Deepwood Crescent has wrapped up. He says the boy and his eight-year-old sister were by the vehicle when it started moving, narrowly missing the girl. Collyer says the incident was preventable.



The four-year-old boy was taken to South Shore Regional Hospital before being flown to the IWK in Halifax. Collyer says he hasn't received an update on the child since late Sunday and doesn't know if he is still in hospital or not.

South Shore Votes: Advance Polls Set To Open

Advance polls for the municipal and school board election will open on Thursday morning in a number of communities throughout the Shore Shore. Residents of the Town of Bridgewater and Municipality of Chester can cast their ballot through e-votes beginning at 8AM. Meanwhile, advance polls will also open tomorrow morning for residents in the Town of Clark's Harbour, Town of Lunenburg, Region of Queens, Town of Shelburne and Municipality of Shelburne. Voting takes place in those jurisdictions on Thursday from Noon until 8PM via the traditional paper ballot. Polling day is October 20th.

Town of Clarke's Harbour: - Royal Canadian Legion Building, 12 Kenny Street, Clark's Harbour. Voting takes place between the hours of 12PM-8PM

Mayoral Candidates Square Off At Park View

An open forum will be held tonight featuring the mayoral candidates seeking the seat in the Municipality of Lunenburg and Town of Bridgewater. Don Downe and Kirk Meisner are squaring off for the MODL mayor's position. Downe is the incumbent and has held position since 2008. Meanwhile, David Walker and Gary MacNeil look for the seat in the Town of Bridgewater. The Bridgewater and Area Chamber of Commerce has organized the debate. It gets underway at 7 o'clock tonight from Park View Education Centre.

Publicover 'Grateful' For Time As Bridgewater Mayor

The mayor of Bridgewater struck the gavel for the final time Tuesday night, bringing an end to his more than 25 years in town politics. Carroll Publicover was first elected to Bridgewater council in 1985 before becoming deputy mayor in 1988. He served in that role and as a councillor until 2004 before becoming mayor. Publicover says he's grateful for his run as the town's chief magistrate.



Publicover shied away from commenting on his post-election plans but hinted he has a few irons in the fire. Council will hold a wrap-up meeting and swear-in the newly elected council November 5.

Major Donation To Queens Health Project

There's been a significant donation toward a major project in Liverpool. The Kinsmen have presented a cheque for 10-thousand dollars toward the Queens General Health Project. Club President Michael Morton says its a sample of what the Kinsmen are all about helping the community in any way they can.



The Kinsmen raised the money through various club projects like their chip-booth, bottle drives, bingo and other projects over the past year.

School Board Forum In Queens

A moderated forum will be held tonight in Liverpool for the five people vying for the lone Queens County seat on the South Shore Regional School Board. Courtney Wentzell, Elliott Payzant, Karen Ohrt, Butch MacLeod and Allan Foster will be present to give people a chance to meet the candidates and ask them questions. The Liverpool Regional High School Advisory Council is hosting the forum tonight at the high school from 7-9pm.

UPDATE: LeBlanc Appeared Frail, Had Bandages On Feet

A man accused of sexually assaulting and confining a 16-year-old boy in Upper Chelsea sat quietly during a brief court appearance today. David James LeBlanc appeared frail, walked with a limp and wore medical bandages around his feet. His feet suffered frostbite while he was on the run from police in northern Ontario. LeBlanc is facing seven charges in total including forcible confinement, two counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, uttering threats, breach of conditions and administering a noxious substance. He was ordered to return to court again on October 23rd. As Leblanc was escorted out of the courtroom, two boys yelled profanities from the gallery, calling him a ``goof'' and saying they hope he dies. R-C-M-P launched their investigation in the case after a woman reported that a boy showed up at her doorstep in Upper Chelsea, barefoot and chained at his wrists and ankles.

New Tenant At Former Centre School

The Fisheries Marine Museum has struck a deal with the Municipality of Lunenburg to lease the former Centre Consolidated school. The museum signed a two-year lease with an option to extend the contract. The deal is expected to save the municipality $128,000 in operating costs over the two years. Mayor Don Downe says it's a win-win situation.



Downe says the museum is expected to use about 75% of the school's space for storage, office and educational purposes. He expects the museum to start moving into the school once the tourist season winds down.

MODL Receives Cheque For PRO Kids

The Municipality of Lunenburg has received a cheque for $2415.00 for the PRO Kids program in the local area. The fundraising efforts were led by Mary Jayne Veinot, who organized events like a silent auction with items from Olympian Jenna Martin to help raise money for the initiative. The program helps children from low-income families a chance to participate in sports. Nick Foley, Kaylen Bruce and Mayor Don Downe are also in the picture.

MODL Purchases Land On Big Tancook Island

The Municipality of Lunenburg has acquired a small parcel of land on Big Tancook Island. Mayor Don Downe says the municipality spent $1,800 to buy the property from the Federal Government. The land is around 4,000 square feet and located near the old government wharf in Southwest Cove. Downe says it's a good purchase.



The land will eventually be turned into a park with picnic tables and benches. He hopes work will begin on transforming the property at some point next year. Downe says the municipality will partner with the community to develop and manage the site.

LeBlanc Facing New Charges - Appears In Court

Mounties have laid five new charges against David James LeBlanc after leading police on a weeklong man hunt which ended last week in northern Ontario. The 47 year-old is facing seven charges in total including forcible confinement, two counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, uttering threats, breach of conditions and administering a noxious substance. He made his first court appearance this morning in a Bridgewater courtroom. LeBlanc looked frail, walked with a limp and wore bandages around his frostbitten feet. His feet suffered significant damage while he was on the run near Thunder Bay. When police picked him up, LeBlanc was walking on a logging road with no shoes in near freezing temperatures. Leblanc was ordered to appear in court again on October 23rd. He will remain in police custody in Halifax.

Former Shelburne Mayor Wants Job Back

There will be two debates this evening (Oct 9) in separate communities along the South Shore. The first is in Shelburne where residents will hear from all four candidates vying for the mayor`s seat in an open forum. Incumbent Al Delaney is being challenged by P.G. Comeau, Robert Sinden and Karen Mattatall. The debate gets underway at 7PM at the Shelburne Community Centre.

One of the candidates for mayor in Shelburne is a familiar face to the office. P.G. Comeau is a former mayor. He says one of the biggest issues ahead for the community is electoral boundaries. Comeau believes the recent report by the commission which suggests Argyle become part of the constituency of Barrington and a part of Shelburne become part of Queens would be a mistake.



Meanwhile, the eight candidates seeking one of six seats on town council in Mahone Bay will also debate the issues tonight. The debate will be held at the Mahone Bay Fire Hall starting at 7:30pm.

Court Appearance This Morning For LeBlanc In Bridgewater

47 year old David James LeBlanc is expected to make his first court appearance today in Bridgewater since his arrest more than a week ago. LeBlanc is charged with forcible confinement and sexual assault in connection with an incident in Upper Chelsea where a 16 year-old boy claims he was held captive and sexually assaulted for nearly two weeks. LeBlanc was arrested on September 30th in northern Ontario.
When police picked him up, he was found walking on a logging road with no shoes and little clothing in near freezing temperatures. He spent nearly four days in hospital recovering from frostbite and was flown back to Halifax in a police airplane on Friday. The body of his co-accused, Wayne Cunningham, was found near an abandoned vehicle on October 3rd, not far from where LeBlanc was arrested.

Bridgewater Boy Run Over By Car

No word this morning on the condition of a four-year-old boy, run over by a car on the weekend in Bridgewater. It happened on Deepwood Crescent when a car rolled backwards and over the boy. Police say two youths were seen near the vehicle before it suddenly moved. The boy was apparently alert after the incident, was taken to South Shore Regional Hospital and then flown to the IWK in Halifax. No charges have been laid but the police investigation is continuing.

Retired Administrator Runs For School Board

Nearly three decades of work with the local school board isn't enough for Jerome Tanner. He's running for the town of Bridgewater's seat on the board after spending time as the board's director of finance before retiring in 2009. Tanner believes he's the right person for the job.



Tanner says declining enrolment and reduced funding are the two biggest issues affecting the school board. He's running against Cheryl Fougere for the town of Bridgewater's lone seat on school board.

Bridgewater Named Baseball Association Of The Year

Bridgewater Baseball has been named 'Association of the Year' by Baseball Nova Scotia. The club had another stand out year with two local teams representing the town at the Eastern Canadian Championships. The Bridgewater club's placed first and third respectively. President Dennis Woodworth says the award means a lot to him and the community.



Bridgewater's Mark Phillips also received major player of the year honours. Baseball Nova Scotia's awards banquet is October 27 in Halifax.

MHL Trade: Lumberjacks Acquire Blueline Help

The CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks have made a big move to shore up their blueline. The local Junior A hockey club has dealt former first round pick Damon MacEachern to the Metro Shipbuilders for 18-year old defenceman Brandon Leonardo. The Jacks also get a fifth round pick in the 2013 draft and a seventh round pick in 2014. The six foot one inch, 190 pound Leonardo was a fourth round selection by Woodstock two years ago. The Lantz native has a goal and an assist in nine games this year. MacEachern has just three points in eight games this season after registering only 17 points a year ago. The Lumberjacks next game is Friday night when they welcome Dieppe.

South Shore Hockey Scores: MHL/Major Midget

A three-goal third period carried Woodstock to a 7-4 win over the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks in MHL action yesterday. The Slammers were holding a slim 4-3 lead entering the final frame. Shawn Boudreau and Luc Ramey each tallied a goal and and assist for the visiting Lumberjacks who gave up four power play markers. The Jacks return to home ice this Friday night when they host Dieppe.

In Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League action in Port Hood the Cape Breton Islanders completed a weekend sweep of the South Shore Mustangs with a 7-6 overtime win. Jordan Messenger led the Stangs with a goal and two assists. 

Accused In Chain's Case To Appear In Bridgewater Court

Mounties say a man facing charges of sexually assaulting and confining a teenage boy will return to later this afterrnoon. Sergeant Alain LeBlanc says 47-year-old David James Leblanc will be returned to the province from Ontario sometime after 5 o'clock via a police airplane. He says Leblanc will appear in court in Bridgewater on Tuesday. Leblanc was arrested Sunday in northern Ontario and was reported to be suffering from frostbite. Police confirmed yesterday that the body of his co-accused, 31-year-old Wayne Alan Cunningham, was found in a wooded area close to where he was arrested. Mounties launched an investigation last week after a woman reported that a partially naked boy showed up at her doorstep in Upper Chelsea with his wrists and ankles bound.

Lunenburg: No Doctors Force Weekend ER Closure

The emergency department will be temporarily closed over the Thanksgiving long-weekend. Officials says the closure will begin on Saturday afternoon at 2:30PM. The ER will remain closed until Monday morning at 7:30AM. The closure is due to a lack of physicians. Anyone requiring emergency services is advised to call 911 or visit the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater. Patients with non-emergencies should contact their family physician or call Health Link 811 for medical advice.

Yarmouth Man Faces Child Porn Charges

A Yarmouth man is facing child porn charges after police raided a home earlier this week. Mounties seized five computers, two cameras, two cell phones, a video camera, floppy disks and USB drives after they conducted a search of a home on Thursday. Police say 53 year-old James Gordon McRae has been charged with possession of child pornography. He's due in court next April. The RCMP encouraging members of the public to report any suspected child sexual exploitation to local police or cybertip.ca.

Loss Of Full Time Jobs, Worrisome Signals: NS Liberal Leader

It's a jobs report that was full of surprises. Statistic Canada says an eye-popping 52,100 jobs were added last month -- five times more than economists expected. But in another surprise, the unemployment rate inched up a tenth of a point to 7.4 because more than 72,000 people joined the work force. Here in this province, the jobless rate is down about one percentage point from August. However, Liberal leader Stephen McNeil says the numbers were buoyed a bit by part- time and seasonal jobs that came along midway through the summer. He says close to 9,000 jobs have been lost province-wide in the past year, several thousand of them on the South Shore, and many of them, young people. McNeil says there's a tidal wave of young people leaving to go elsewhere to find work.



McNeil predicts the loss of so many full-time jobs will accelerate. He says that, combined with the employment troubles facing youth, are worrying economic signals.

Four Hurricane Players Named To Team NS

Four Western Hurricane hockey players have been selected to represent Nova Scotia at the Atlantic Challenge Cup this weekend in Moncton. The event features the top players from New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for a weekend of competition at the Under-14 and Under-15 age groups. Chester's Jacob Myra made the Under-14 squad. Yarmouth's Colby Muise, Barrington's Christopher Goreham and Bridgewater's Keith Getson cracked the under-15 roster.

No Date Yet For Suspect's Return To NS

Police say they are still trying to determine when a man wanted in connection with an alleged sexual assault and confinement case in Lunenburg County will be returned to the province from northern Ontario. Sgt. Alain LeBlanc of the RCMP says David Leblanc will be returned when he is medically fit following his arrest Sunday. He says the body of Wayne Cunningham -- a co-accused in the case -- was identified yesterday.



Foul play is not suspected in Cunningham's death.  His body was discovered Wednesday night along a logging road in northern Ontario. Police allege Cunningham and Leblanc held a 16-year-old boy against his will and sexually assaulted him over several days in a house in Upper Chelsea before fleeing to Ontario.

Gasoline Prices Rise Again!

Its no huge surprise that gasoline prices are up today along the South Shore.  However. the increase is not as dramatic as in New Brunswick yesterday when prices there were hiked by almost 7 cents a litre. Today in our area, regular self serve gas is selling for $1.41.7 a litre ... thats a 4 cent increase from yesterday's price. Diesel is also up by 3 cents at $1.35.4 per litre. High test gas and home heating oil are also up a bit today.

Clippers Welcome Fundy For Home Opener

The Chester Clippers open defence of their league title tonight at home against the Fundy Phantoms. The Clippers are coming off an undefeated regular season and a year where they went 49-1-1 overall. They also won the Atlantic Canadian Championship. Captain Mathieu Bourgeois says expectations remain high for this year's club.


Chester has 13 players returning from last year's squad, but lost four players including Corey Young who led the Clippers with 45 goals. The game starts at 6:30 tonight at the Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Arena in Chester.

BREAKING: Police ID Cunningham's Body

RCMP have identified human remains found in norhtern Ontario as 31-year-old Wayne Alan Cunningham. Foul play is not suspected in his death. Greenstone police located Cunningham's body around 7:30PM on Wednesday night near the 2003 Hyundai Elantra that was recovered in the area of Long Lac, Ontario. Cunningham had faced charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement after a boy alleged he was held captive by two men at a home last month.
Cunningham's co-accused, David James Leblanc, was arrested Sunday on a road in Greenstone after officers received a report of a man wandering with no shoes and wearing light clothing in near-freezing temperatures.

NSCC Lunenburg Campus Enrolment Holds Steady

It's another year of solid enrolment for the NSCC's Lunenburg Campus. There are 415 full-time students this year at the Bridgewater-based campus compared to 422 during the 2011-12 school year. Spokeswoman Kathleen Cameron says enrolment is holding steady throughout the 13 campus across the province. She says there were nearly 10,700 students enrolled in programs ranging from trades to health services. That's about the same as the last two years. Cameron says there have been increases in the number of students who are completing high school at the colleges, with about 2,100 students currently in the School of Access program. The colleges expect an additional 15,000 Nova Scotians will participate in apprenticeship training, customized training and continuing education over the course of the year.

VIDEO: New Features At White Point Main Lodge

One of Two Beachstone Fireplaces

Workers are about a month away from wrapping up construction at White Point's main lodge. Community and business leaders were invited to tour the facility Thursday with many getting their first glimpse of the new lodge after fire destroyed the historic building last November. The new lodge will include two guest rooms with a full dining area and convention space. General Manager Danny Morton says new features include more windows and another fireplace.



Morton says they also have returning features like a pool and hot tub area, as well as exercise facilities. White Point will house visitors from across the province for Nova Scotia Music Week November 8-11. Advance Polling Dates:

Town of Bridgewater: October 11th through to October 20th (E-Voting 10 days). Voting permitted from 8AM until 8PM on each day of advanced polls.

Municipality of the District of Lunenburg: October 13th and October 16th (Two days only). Voting permitted from 12PM until 8PM on both days.

Town of Lunenburg and Region of Queens: October 11th and October 16th (Two days only). Voting permitted from 12PM until 8PM on both days.

Municipality of the District of Chester: October 11th through to October 18th (Evoting 8 days). Voting permitted from 8AM until 8PM on each day of advance polls.

Town of Mahone Bay: October 13th and October 16th (Two days only). Voting permitted from 12PM until 8PM.

Town of Shelburne and Municipality of Shelburne: October 11th and 16th (Two days only). Voting permitted from 12PM until 8PM.

Town of Clark's Harbour: Advance polls will be available on October 11th and 16th between 12PM and 8PM (Two days only).

Shelburne Mayoralty Candidate Would Seek Greater Promotion Of Area's Assets

A candidate for mayor in Shelburne wants to see greater promotion of the town's natural assets as a means of attracting new industries. Bob Sinden says the area has a lot of offer like public safety and its history. He believes industries such as Cooke Aquaculture, which is expanding, are paying attention.


And that future according to Sinden is ... bright. He foresees increased health care and tourism promotion to bring new businesses and jobs to the area. Sinden, P.G. Comeau and Karen Harris-Mattatall are challenging incumbent Alan Delaney for the mayor's position in the October 20-th elections.

BREAKING: Search Ends For Cunningham, Body Found

Police in Ontario believe they have found the body of a man wanted in the alleged confinement of a 16-year-old boy in Upper Chelsea. Ontario Provincial Police say the body of a 30-year-old man was recovered near a 2003 Hyundai Elantra that had been recovered on a logging road in northern Ontario. Police say the body has not been positively identified, but they believe it to be Wayne Alan Cunningham, who faced charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement after a boy alleged he was held captive by two men at a home last month. The cause of death is under investigation by the Coroner's Office. The car was found Wednesday about 19 kilometres off the highway in Greenstone, about 250 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Cunningham's co-accused, David James Leblanc, was arrested Sunday after officers received a report of a man wandering with no shoes and light clothing in near-freezing temperatures.

Gasoline Prices May Zoom Upwards

If New Brunswick is any indication, South Shore gasoline prices may take a significant jump overnight tonight. In New Brunswick this morning, gas prices have gone up. The Energy and Utilities Board has boosted the maximum price for regular self-serve to a one dollar and 40.6 cents per litre. Thats an an increase of 6.6 cents from last week's price. There were smaller increases for diesel, which is up 2.5 cents and furnace oil, which is up 1.8 cents.
