Celebration of Honour

Thirty-nine Canadian flags are posted to honour the veterans whose names are listed on the cenotaph in Mahone Bay during the Celebration of Honour. The ceremony was held Sunday November 1st, in Mahone Bay on the waters edge across from the three churches at 1:00 pm. In collaboration with the Mahone Bay Legion Branch #49, the celebration included a ceremony that posted a Canadian flag on the water’s edge for each of the soldiers, forming a Field of Flags. Each soldier’s next of kin was invited to post their relative’s flag. The flag will be given to the family after it has stood sentry in the Field of Flags until November 12th. Lieutenant- Governor, Mayann Francis was there to lay a wreath on behalf of the Veterans.

Boat Fire

A man had to be rescued from a pleasure boat that caught fire in Mahone Bay. He was pulled from the eight-metre fibreglass craft by other boaters in the Clay Island area. There were no injuries. The boat was towed ashore where it burned to the waterline. There's no word on what caused the fire before noon yesterday (Thursday).

Youden Holding

It was first proposed back in May of 2007, now a housing development for Mahone Bay is on indefinate hold. Mayor Joe Feeney says Council is discussing a letter of intent to continue persuing the development with developer Bob Youden. However, Feeney says indicators are the development is not going to go ahead in the near future because of the economic environment. Youden's proposal for a 24 million dollar housing development on the Old School Lands, and the loss of a soccer field and nearby woods became the centre of a controversy that rocked the town. A Group of residents filed an appeal with the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board over Council's decision refusing to rezone the property from residential to recreational use.

Monumental Task

In a small town, you may think that everyone knows everyone. But, in Mahone Bay with 900 residents, there is little known about the 39 soldiers whose names are on the cenotaph in the middle of town. Now, Mahone Bay is working at identifying and paying homage to the men from the community who died for Canada in the Great War, World War II and the Korean War. Mayor Joe Feeney is organizing a group to establish a Celebration of Honour for the 39 fallen soldiers. Feeney says they are hoping to publish a booklet giving information about each of the men. And he says they want to hear from people in the Mahone Bay area who may have information about the men. He adds there is some information available for the World War I veterans but less available for the World War II or Korean War soldiers. He's asking people to get in touch with him or town staff if they can help shed some light on their identities and connections to the community.

Mahone Bay Taxes

An increase in the Mahone Bay's residential assessment means a decrease in tax rates. Overall assessments are up more than five percent to almost 107 million. Most homeowners will pay about the same tax bill as last year. Council was able to drop the residential tax rate down to a dollar 18 cents. Commercial rates increased by nine cents to 2.83 to cover the business occupancy tax phase out. Mahone Bay's budget this year is worth 1.96 million dollars.

South Shore/St. Margaret's MP Gerald Keddy will be doling out more dollars today.  Keddy, on behalf of  Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, will highlight contributions to assist seniors at the Forties Community Centre and the Mahone Bay Centre.  The funding announcement for the Forties is set for 11 o'clock this morning at the Community Centre, while Keddy will be in Mahone Bay for a 2 o'clock announcement at the Mahone Bay Centre Society.
