Bridgewater Golfers Contending For Provincial Title

A pair of Bridgewater golfers are in contention for a provincial title heading into today's final round at the Nova Scotia Golf Association's Junior Championship. The event is taking place at Abercrombie County Club in New Glasgow. Matt Gallupe sits two shots back of leader Brett McKinnon of Bell Bay. Ryan Nowe is three behind. Gallupe shot a third round 75 Wednesday while Nowe posted a 76. The three players tee off together in the final group at 11 Thursday morning. The top three players after Thursday's final round will represent Nova Scotia at the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, held at Osprey Ridge beginning July 30.  

Martin Wins Final Race Before Pre-Olympic Camp

Jenna Martin won her second race in a row Wednesday night at the Toronto International Track and Field Games. The Bridgewater Olympian ran 53.09 seconds, beating out Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands. She also won Sunday's 400 metre event at the Aileen Meagher Track Classic. Martin now heads back to Florida before leaving for pre-Olympic camp in Germany.

South Shore: DNR Could Issue Fire Ban

Officials will decide within the next 24 to 48 hours whether or not to impose a fire ban in Lunenburg and Queens Counties. The two counties are considered a high risk for forest fires under the Department of Natural Resources Fire Weather Index map. Supervisor for Wildfire Management, Jim Rudderham, says they are close to issuing a ban.



Criteria for a fire ban includes the amount of rain in the forecast and how much rain has fallen over the last few days. Rudderham says people should avoid having a fire if they can.

Bridgewater: Practitioners To Accept More Patients

Bridgewater's new nurse practitioners will begin accepting more patients next week. It's the second intake since their temporary offices opened on Glen Allen Drive in May. The practitioners have already taken on 600 patients with the ability to handle up to 1,400 at full capacity. It's expected to take at least a year to completely fill out the patient list. Premier Darrell Dexter visited their office during a stop in the area this week. He says they are filling a large gap in the community and assisting those without family doctors.



Nurse practitioners are qualified to order tests, prescribe medications and refer patients to specialists. Beginning on Monday, new patients will be able to phone and arrange an appointment. The number is 527-4310. A third intake is set for sometime in fall.

BREAKING: Former Bridgewater Post Office Sold

The 109-year-old former post office on King Street in Bridgewater has been sold. Mayor Carroll Publicover confirmed the news today with CKBW/HANK-FM. Publicover says Developer Ken Anthony has acquired the building. He says the post office will be renovated for a new look and called it positive news.



It's not known what the final price tag was for the building, which has been for sale since 2010.

Good Luck Card Circulating For Jenna Martin

South Shore residents are getting the chance to give Jenna Martin a personalized send-off to London. Financial management company Assante Hydrostone has created a good luck card for anyone to sign and give best wishes to the two-time Canadian champion before she embarks on the Olympics. The chair of Jenna's fundraising campaign, Kevin Hayward, says its another avenue for people to show their support.

Price Tag Revealed For Purchase Of NewPage Mill

 Legal documents say Vancouver-based Pacific West Commercial Corporation intends to spend 33 million dollars to buy the shuttered NewPage paper mill in Cape Breton.  The mill has been closed since last September. 

An affidavit says Pacific West would become the only shareholder of the mill in Point Tupper under the plan, which has yet to be approved in court. 

Pacific West has been in talks to purchase the idled mill since January, though a purchase price had previously not been disclosed.

MODL Moves Ahead With Outdoor Smoking Policy

The mayor for the Municipality of Lunenburg says its a step in the right direction. Don Downe says developing a "Smoke Free Outdoor Spaces" policy makes sense for the health of others who don't smoke. The move means the municipality will encourage residents not to smoke on municipally-owned land like parks, playgrounds and sports fields. Downe says the signs would gently urge people to re-consider lighting up.



Downe believes people will respect the policy, though no action will be taken against those who choose to light up.

Premier Recognizes South Shore Diamond Jubilee Winners

Eleven South Shore individuals have received a medal for their contributions to the province. Premier Darrell Dexter presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals Tuesday afternoon at the Bridgewater Days Inn. The medal honours the Queen's 60th anniversary of her succession to the throne, along with her service and dedication to Canada. Hundreds of Nova Scotians will receive the medal this year.

Bridgewater Council Briefs

Bridgewater council has approved a number of vehicle tenders. 


- Members signed off on a used 2009 Kia Rio for the Finance, Administration and Planning departments at a cost of $11,470.42. The budget was $12,000.


- Bridgewater Police will receive a 2012 Dodge Charger at a cost of $29,465.24. The budget was $30,000.


- The town will get a 2013 Ford F-150 for $22,131.57 for the Waste Water Treatment Plant. The approved budget for the vehicle was $20,000. It will be a budget overrun of $2,131.57.

MODL Studying Ash Material At Former Jail Site

The Municipality of Lunenburg is investigating ash material found on site at the former Centre Jail. Council approved a motion to award SLR Consulting of Halifax $8,757.25 to study the material, subject to approving a sub-contractor. Ash was discovered under one of the outbuildings during demolition last November. CAO Tammy Wilson says the work needs to be done.




She says the study will allow the municipality to choose between two options; either remove the ash and dispose it at an approved landfill or cap the site and monitor it with restricted use in the future.

NS Gov't Injects Funds For South Shore Hospitals

The province has pumped more than half a million dollars into new equipment at South Shore hospitals. Premier Darrell Dexter announced $550,000 in funding in Bridgewater this morning. The money will go toward replacing 49 patient beds at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater and Fishermen's Memorial in Lunenburg. CEO of South Shore Health Dr. Peter Vaughan says it's important to modernize hospitals equipment.



The funds will also buy a new tissue processor for South Shore Regional and equipment to support infection prevention and control. The health foundation also kicked into 25 percent of the total funding for the announcement.

Another Buyer Interested In Former Post Office

It looks like there is more interest in buying the former post office on King Street in Bridgewater. Mayor Carroll Publicover wouldn't say much, but confirmed it's a different potential buyer than the one in negotiations from March to May. Publicover is optimistic a deal can get done.



Publicover wouldn't reveal who is behind the sale, saying he would keep his source confidential. The 109-year-old post office has been for sale since 2010.

Moppie Fest Underway In Yarmouth

The second annual Moppies Festival is underway in Yarmouth. 
It involves local residents who use floor mops to create scarecrow-like figures.  The moppies will be on display until the end of the month.
The first Moppies Festival was held last summer during Yarmouth's 250th anniversary celebrations.

Minor Damage After Boat Fire In Lunenburg

No injuries after an old scallop dragger caught fire along the Lunenburg waterfront. Officials with the town's fire department responded to a call of a vessel up in smoke off Bluenose Drive around 9:30 Monday night. Captain Bruce Parks says workers were on the vessel welding before leaving for the day.




A deputy fire chief says the boat sustained minor damage, burning insulation and fibreglass, but was never in danger of sinking. The vessel is being renovated to be turned into a coastal cruiser.

Too Early To Assess Shared Bike Lanes: Shaw

Bridgewater's director of planning isn't phased by a recent poll suggesting residents believe the new shared bike lanes aren't safe. Eric Shaw says work is still being done to the lanes to make sure cyclists and motorists understand how they work. An average of 68% of online voters at http://www.ckbw.ca/ and  http://www.hankfm.ca/ are concerned about the overall safety of the bike lanes. However, Shaw says its too early to jump to conclusions.



Shaw expects the lanes to be finished over the next few weeks.

Feature: Sisters Donate Park Land to Chester

A trio of sisters who grew up in Western Shore want to make sure a local park remains open for everyone to enjoy. Joy van Norden, Frances Sawler and Joan Delorey have donated a parcel of land in Wild Rose Park to the municipality of Chester. The municipality is trying to settle with other property owners in the park after council decided in December to expropriate the land. VanNorden says they didn't want to take the money for their oceanfront property.



A plaque will be placed on a granite rock in Wild Rose Park recognizing their donation. Councillor Bob Myra says the park is a beautiful part of Western Shore and called it an extremely kind donation.

Lohnes Wins Double Bronze At Judo Nationals

It was a double bronze medal finish for Whitney Lohnes at the judo nationals in Toronto, Ontario. The 19-year-old finished third in the under-20 division Sunday, after posting a 2-1 record. The Bridgewater resident also placed third earlier in the tournament in the 48kg category of the senior's division. Lohnes is expected to take the rest of the summer off and get back into competition in September.

Province, Society At Odds Over Bluenose II Assets

There's no end in sight in the battle over the Bluenose II assets. The head of the Preservation Trust Society announced in June, half of its $1.4 million has been turned over to the government. However, the province's heritage minister recently said they're still waiting for full disclosure from Senator Wilfred Moore. Darrell Dexter says the situation remains at a standstill



Dexter says the province wants the money and documents to make sure they aren't assuming a financial liability. The Bluenose II company store is considered the main asset.

PC Leader Says Province Short On Nursing Homes

Wait times for acute care beds in some of the province's hospitals are ridiculously long according to PC leader Jamie Baillie.  He says too many patients are tying up beds when they should be cared-for in long-term care facilities.

However, Baillie says there aren't enough nursing homes and not one new nursing home has been built since the NDP government was elected three years ago.  He says an apparent lack of planning is costing dearly and its time something was done about it.



Baillie says better planning and more nursing homes would lead to a less expensive health-care system.

South Shore Drugstore Targetted By Thieves

Chester RCMP are investigating a break, enter and theft in Chester Basin.  It happened early Friday morning at the Highway 3 Pharmasave.

When RCMP officers arrived, they found the store had been broken into and an undisclosed amount of medications were taken. Two males wearing masks were seen fleeing from the store.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time and may have seen these men to contact Chester RCMP right away.

CUPE Worker Seeking Council Nod

A worker with the Canadian Union of Public Employees is going after a spot on Lunenburg municipal council. Larry Power has announced his intentions to run for District 5. Power believes his experience dealing with three levels of government will serve him well. He says the timing is right.



Power says one major issue for him is the downloading of schools from the provincial government to the municipality.



Power has lived in Lunenburg County for the past eight years. Current District 5 councillor Sandra Statton doesn't intend to run again in the October 20 elections.

Martin Wins 400 Metre Aileen Meagher Title

It was a homecoming of sorts for Bridgewater's Jenna Martin. The 24-year-old won the 400 metre event at the 2012 Aileen Meagher Track Classic Sunday night in Halifax, crossing the finish line at 52.67 seconds. Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands finished second. The meet was Martin's first in Halifax since last year's event. She now heads to Toronto this week for another stop in her Olympic preparations.

Volunteers Needed: Shelburne Tall Ships

 

The Town of Shelburne is still in need of some volunteers to help with the celebration of the Tall Ships. Director of Community and Economic Development, Jerry Locke says they need about 60 volunteers in total to help host the event. Locke says approximately 30 or 40 people have already signed up but they need a few more helping hands.



Anyone interested in helping out can register online or contact the town at 875-3873 or email jlocke@town.shelburne.ns.ca . The tall ships will visit Shelburne on July 28th and 29th.

BREAKING: Bluenose II Launch Delayed

The scheduled launch of the Bluenose II has been delayed. Premier Darrell Dexter confirmed today the province's sailing ambassador isn't expected to return to the water until some time toward the end of the year.


 
Dexter says the plan was to have the schooner back in the water in time for a premiers meeting in Halifax later this month. However, the premier says that won't happen because the schooner requires more work at the Lunenburg shipyard. Despite the delay, Dexter says the refit is still attracting a lot of attention and he isn't worried about a loss of tourists.




The vessel is undergoing a $17-million restoration. The premier says there's a delay because it's a one-of-a-kind project.

VIDEO: Province Announces $460,000 For Boatbuilders Association

Lunenburg's mayor says the province's announcement to fund a new marine trade will go a long way for the town. Premier Darrell Dexter has announced $460,000 in funding for the province's boat building association. The money will be used to develop a new trade known as a marine service technician. Laurence Mawhinney says the future looks bright for Lunenburg.



The marine service technician would train workers to service, repair, refit and upgrade ships. The premier says the new training program will ensure boat builders have updated skills. Dexter made the announcement at the Bluenose II site in the Lunenburg Shipyard.

Giant Tiger Expanding Bridgewater Store

A retail store in Bridgewater is expanding. Giant Tiger is expected to begin a full renovation in early August and increase their capacity by an extra 5,000 square feet. Store Manager Shane Demmings says the store will be transformed.



He says the store will remain open through the renovations and doesn't expect customers to be impacted by the work. Demmings dosn't know how much it will cost to do the renovations. A grand re-opening target date is slated for November 24.

Jamie Baillie: Moving Civil Servant Jobs From Halifax Is Bad HR

The vast majority of Nova Scotia civil servants asked to relocate from Halifax to offices in smaller towns say they won't go. 71 unionized workers from three government departments were asked to relocate.  Only five have agreed.  57 have chosen to stay in Halifax and be shuffled to other departments, while 9 have quit their jobs altogether.  Provincial PC Leader Jamie Baillie tells us ... the Dexter government has been pulling a "fast" one on rural communites like those on the South Shore.



Baillie says its been all about ... PR ... and not very good .. HR ... on the part of the government. He also says you can't create jobs in rural areas by simply shuffling existing ones around.

MODL To Encourage Smoke-Free Outdoors

The Municipality of Lunenburg is looking to cut down the number of people smoking in outdoor spaces. Committee of the Whole approved a motion Tuesday to forward the "Smoke Free Outdoor Spaces" policy to council for decision. The policy does not prohibit smoking but will encourage people to think twice before lighting up in municipally-owned parks, playgrounds, sports fields and open spaces. CAO Tammy Wilson says the policy could be an effective way to cut down smoking on their property.




Council is expected to make a decision at its July 10 meeting.

Hurlburt Sentencing Held Over To Later In Month

A former Nova Scotia cabinet minister sobbed openly in Yarmouth court yesterday as he expressed regret for defrauding the province of just over $25,000.

Crown attorney Andrew Macdonald says Richard Hurlburt deserves a sentence in line with what was given to former Liberal Dave Wilson. Wilson was sentenced to nine months in jail for defrauding the public purse of 61-thousand dollars.

In Wilson's case, Macdonald says the court took into account ... his actions were driven by a gambling addiction.



Meanwhile, defence lawyer Stan MacDonald says Hurlburt deserves credit because he has shown remorse, apologized and paid the money back.



Justice David MacAdam reserved a decision on Hurlburt's sentence until July 27th.

Gas Prices: Here We Go Again!

It seemed too good to be true....a continuation of lower gas prices.  They did, as expected, and increased overnight at South Shore pumps.  When you haul into a service station today, you'll find a litre of regular self serve selling for 3.5 cents more at $1.22.4.  Diesel is up too ...  selling for two cents more at $1.24.4 per litre.

Vogler's Cove Bridge Could Re-Open Friday

A new concrete culvert has been installed on the Dollivers Brook Bridge in Vogler's Cove. The span has been closed for the last two weeks so workers with the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Renewal could replace the culvert. Operations Supervisor Glen Strang says the project cost just over $150,000. He says the work was a priority.



Strang expects the bridge to open either Friday afternoon or Saturday.

Lohnes Wins Bronze At Judo Nationals

Bridgewater's Whitney Lohnes has added a bronze medal to her collection. The 19-year-old finished third in the 48kg category of the senior's division at the Canadian Judo Championships in Toronto, Ontario. Lohnes says she's happy with the results but knows she has lots to work on to get better.




She's now preparing for the under-20 division competition on Sunday. Lohnes says she's trying not to be over-confident before hitting the mat.

Martin Finishes Close Second At Moncton Meet

It was a near win for Jenna Martin in Moncton, New Brunswick. The newly-minted Olympian finished second at the Hub City Track and Field Classic Thursday evening, finishing two-hundredths of a second behind winner Carol Rodriguez of Puerto Rico. Martin clocked in at a time of 52.04 seconds while Rodriguez crossed the finish line at 52.02 seconds. Next up for the Bridgewater runner will be the Aileen Meagher track meet, held this Sunday at Saint Mary's University.

Composites Atlantic Increasing Workforce

A Lunenburg-based manufacturing company is hiring more staff to meet demand. Composites Atlantic is looking to add at least 30 production operators to its workforce. The company is getting more orders from their current clients, prompting the need for more workers. Composites Atlantic is expected to have about 340 workers when hiring wraps up at the end of the summer. The company is considered a world leader in the design, development and manufacturing of advanced composites for the aeronautic, space and defense industries

Former Bowater Workers Being Recruited

Premier Darrell Dexter says he's not surprised former Bowater Mersey employees are being recruited by other companies. Northern Pulp Nova Scotia in Pictou County and J.D. Irving Limited each held job fairs this week in Liverpool. Both companies are courting the former workers who lost their job when the Brooklyn mill closed last month. Dexter says its an indication the Bowater workers are highly skilled and in demand.



He says the government did the right thing when it offered $1.5 million to upgrade the skills of Bowater workers as part of a bailout package for the mill. Dexter believes the training will help some of those workers who lost their jobs find other work that might not be tied to the pulp and paper industry.

Chester: Screening Operation Shuts Down

An illegal screening operation within the Village of Chester has been dismantled. Chester council made the decision to seek a court order last week but work at the site stopped last Friday. An individual had been processing earth and rock without a permit in a location next to the Old Stone Bridge. The operation was also in violation of municipal bylaws in Chester. An official with the municipality says they will no longer need to pursue the court injunction. However, the individual will be fined an undisclosed amount for each day the work was taking place.

Hurlburt Will Be Sentenced Today

Sentencing will be held today in Yarmouth for a former provincial politician charged in the province's spending scandal.  Richard Hurlburt pleaded guilty in April to fraud and breach of trust. 

Hurlburt resigned from the legislature on February 9, 2010, following revelations that he had spent his constituency allowance on a generator and a 40" television, which together cost over $11,000.

The former Tory cabinet minister is the second former member of the legislature to plead guilty in the scandal.  Former Liberal Dave Wilson was sentenced in April to nine months in jail for defrauding the public purse of 61-thousand dollars.

Two More Fish Farms For Shelburne County Receive Federal Approval

Two proposed fish farm sites in Shelburne County have received the approval of Transport Canada.  They will be located in Jordan Bay, about 2 kilometers apart, and will be operated by Cooke Aquaculture.  Transport Canada says its convinced ... proper safeguards will be in place for wildlife and marine habitat and the project will not cause adverse environmental effects.  The province must now give its approval to the sites.

Health Services Foundation: Fundraising Complete For New Echo

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore has reached their fundraising goal for a new Echo Ultrasound system. The 14th annual Hit it for Health golf tournament Wednesday raised $31,380, helping the group over the $244,000 mark to buy the equipment. A local anonymous donor also stepped up and provided funds to help the Foundation achieve their goal. Managing Director Arleen Stevens says the individual's donations helped their campaign become a big success.



Stevens adds, it was another successful year for the event.

She says they will now have to go through a purchase process, with hopes of getting the new equipment this fall.

Olympian Martin Races In Moncton

It will be the first event for Jenna Martin since she qualified for the Olympics. The 24-year-old Bridgewater native races in Moncton Thursday evening at the Hub City Track and Field Classic. Martin will compete in the 400 metre portion of the meet. She has the fastest time this season out of the seven competitors. The two-time Canadian champion is using the event as a tune-up and preparation for the Olympic Games, which start almost three weeks from today. Martin will run at 6:40 Thursday evening.

Habitat For Humanity: Family For Mahone Bay Build Needed

The need for a family is at an all-time high for Habitat for Humanity. The South Shore Chapter is about to start building a home in Mahone Bay, but doesn't have a family that qualifies yet. Some of the criteria includes the family's need, their ability to re-pay a no down payment or interest mortage and volunteering 500 hours towards building their home. Chair of Habitat's family selection committee, Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, says finding a family is a priority.



An information meeting is scheduled for Thursday night at 6:30pm at the United Church in Mahone Bay.

Women's Centre Advocating Against Violence

"Be a piece of the solution. Be the Peace we all yearn for." Those words are part of a new community project through Second Story Women's Centre. The centre is hoping to create a three year action plan to address relationship violence. A free three-day public gathering to discuss the action plan will be held at the Lunenburg Community Centre beginning Thursday night. The full schedule is as follows:

Dexter: Confident Michelin Announcement Will Happen

Premier Darrell Dexter says he's not worried over Michelin's decision to postpone plans for an announcement tomorrow at the company's plant in Waterville. The company didn't give any reasons in a news release for the decision to postpone its announcement, and a new date has not been set. Dexter says there's no reason to believe the announcement won't go forward at a later date.



The tire manufacturer has been looking at expanding its operations in the Annapolis Valley community. In May, Dexter announced funding for a study that would look at relocating the Waterville Municipal Airport to allow for expansion at Michelin.

Peterson-Rafuse Downplays Need For Bowater Inquiry

The MLA for Chester-St.Margarets and Dexter cabinet minister is trying to clear-up confusion surrounding the government's 50-million dollar bailout package for Bowater-Mersey last December.  Denise Peterson-Rafuse says she's disturbed by what she says are inaccuracies being expressed by people with political motives. 

In a CKBW and HANK-FM News interview, Peterson-Rafuse says the money was well spent, based on what was known or .. not known ... at the time about the future of forestry and Bowater.



Peterson-Rafuse says its unfortunate the deal fell through and Resolute was forced to close the Brooklyn mill.  However, she says there certainly was nothing done below board that would warrant further investigation, as requested by the Canadian Taxpayers' Federation. 

She is confident replacement industries will be found to take up the slack left by Bowater's closure more than two weeks ago.

Affordable Housing Units Open Today in Chester

The ribbon will be cut this morning on four new housing units in Chester.  They will provide more affordable housing options for seniors and those with disabilities.  Premier Darrell Dexter and Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse will officially open the new units.  They're are on Highway 3, across from Foodland.

Martin Busy Ahead Of Olympic Games

Bridgewater's newly-crowned Olympian is back in Nova Scotia. Jenna Martin was in Halifax Tuesday to help promote this year's Aileen Meagher Track Classic, which goes this Sunday at Saint Mary's University. Martin, who will compete in the 400 metre event this weekend, says she has to remain consistent before the London Games.



Fellow Olympian Geoff Harris and 2008 Olympian Adrienne Power were also on-hand to promote this weekend's meet. Martin says it will help prepare her for the Olympics.

The two-time Canadian champion says she's still on cloud nine after clinching her Olympic berth last Friday night in Calgary. Martin will also run in Moncton this Thursday and in Toronto next week before flying to Germany for pre-Olympic camp.
