Halloween and Later

A quiet and uneventful Halloween night in the Town of Bridgewater. Police report three individuals were arrested and charged for intoxication in a public place, while another three people were charged with liquor control offences. One person was issued a 24 hour suspension of his driver's licence. Members of the Bridgewater Fire Department were patrolling the streets of the Town, and Police also send their thanks to the general public for making Halloween a safe and happy event.

Bridgewater Police are investigating a break-in at Lawton's Drug Store on Lahave Street around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Police responded to a complaint of a Break and Enter in progress and upon arrival discovered a quantity of money missing from within. Bridgewater GIS and K-9 were called to the scene and conducted a follow-up investigation. The matter is still under investigation at this time and Police are asking for public assistance in identifying those responsible.

Woman Attacked

Police say a woman wasn't seriously hurt after allegedly being attacked in the streets of Bridgewater early this morning. Officers say they were called about ten to five by the adult female who told them she had been sexually assaulted in the area of York and Phoenix Streets. The incident happened between 3:30 and 4:30. The story as relayed by Bridgewater Police is that she was approached by two males. One of them grabbed her, knocked her down and assaulted her. Both men then ran off, northbound on York Street. Police describe them as white, early to mid-forties, five and a half feet tall, 170 pounds. One was wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans and a goatee. The other was wearing a hoodie and black jeans. A police dog was brought in and several streets were blocked off for awhile this morning while police were looking for them. So far, no one has been arrested and police are still looking for them.

Scrappy Crimes

Bridgewater Police are investigating a break and enter into a Bridgewater business. Sometime during the overnight hours of Thursday October 22nd to Friday morning, October 23rd, a person or persons broke into Oickle’s Bottle Exchange on High Street. A sum of money and several other items were stolen. Police are asking anyone who witnessed these events to contact Bridgewater Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

You can pretty much guess more than one person was involved in this heist. Barrington RCMP are investigating the theft of scrap metal from a business in Barrington Passage that happened overnight last Thursday. Culprits cut open a gate to a fenced compound and stole two thousand pounds of scrap aluminum and 700 pounds of scrap stainless steel. Anyone with information concerning the theft is asked to contact the Barrington RCMP. (902-637-2325).

Lunenburg Assault

Not a whole lot is known about an alleged incident in Lunenburg this week that landed a teenager in hospital and an adult male in police custody. RCMP say it started with a call just after eight o'clock Tuesday night. They responded to a complaint of a young man being sprayed with some kind of irritant before being hit in the head with the canister it was in. It happened at the Lunenburg Community Center Parking Lot. Police say they youth ended up at Fishermen's Memorial where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. An adult male was arrested later Tuesday evening. He was released on conditions and a court date was scheduled for December 16th in Bridgewater. Charges pending include assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

Crime Sheet

Bridgewater Police being kept busy with a rash of break-ins.Sometime during the overnight hours Sunday October 11th to Monday morning, October 12th, a person or persons broke into the Bridgewater Memorial Arena as well as the Senior's Club upstairs. A sum of money was stolen and items damaged. During that same time period the Olde Town Gold Course was also broken into. An undisclosed amount of money was taken and items were also damaged. Police are also investigating a broken window at a business located at the corner of Empire and King Streets. That incident happened sometime overnight Saturday, October 10th. And between Friday evening October 9th and Tuesday morning, October 13th, a laptop computer was stolen from an office at South Shore Regional Hospital. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bridgewater Police or CRIMESTOPPERS.

UPDATE: Charges Laid

A Queens county couple will be appearing in Court in Bridgewater this morning charged in relation to the sudden death of an infant. Staff Sergeant Bruno Deveau tells CKBW the 25-year old woman will be answering to a charge of Neglect to obtain assistance in child-birth.
And a count of Concealing the body of a child has been laid against the woman and her 31-year old common law husband. RCMP say the infant's remains were brought into Queens General Hospital Monday. The pair were arrested a few hours later. Police believe the woman gave birth at home last Wednesday and the baby boy died then or shortly afterwards. An autopsy has been done, but no cause of death has been identified according to police. RCMP have not named the couple either.

Death of Newborn Investigated

Two people are under arrest in connection with the sudden death of a newborn baby in Liverpool. Queens RCMP Corporal Grant Webber says a deceased male infant was brought into Queens General Hospital last night.The mother gave birth at home on Wednesday evening and kept the infant at the residence until she turned it over to medical staff on Monday. Webber says no charges have yet been laid. but the 25 year old mother and her common-law husbnd have been arrested. An autopsy has been performed but the results are not known at this time. Units from the South West Nova Major Crime Unit and Street Untis from Shelburne and Bridgewater are assisting Queens RCMP.

Lunenburg Crimes

A break and enter being reported at the Golf Course in Lunenburg. RCMP say it happened overnight Friday or early Saturday morning. Someone busted into the Bluenose Golf Club and took off with a substantial amount of alcohol. Police think a vehicle was likely involved in the crime. They are asking for anyone who saw any suspicious activity around the Lunenburg golf course after hours this weekend to call them. They are also reporting damage to property on Maple Avenue in Lunenburg. That was Saturday. Lawn ornaments were thrown around and a vehicle was damaged.

Wharf Assault Delay

One of the men charged in connection with an assault at the Chester government wharf earlier this summer has requested more time to see a lawyer. Twenty-eight year old Chad Wesley Swinimer of Chester along with a co-accused are facing resulting from a late night altercation at the wharf on August 20th. A woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after she allegedly got involved in a disagreement between her husband and three other men. Swinimer is accused of striking the woman and her husband with a wooden fence stake. He's charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He's also facing two drug charges including production and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Swinimer is slated to return to court November 18th to enter pleas. Meantime, 26 year old Joel Ray Meister has elected to be tried by a Supreme Court judge alone on the charges he's facing in relation to the wharf incident. A preliminary hearing has been set for next March 25th.

Crash Charge Trial

A Bridgewater man facing a number of charges relating to a series of hit and run crashes in April has pleaded not guilty and will go to trial next May 25th.. Forty year old Stephen Richard Burton is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and one count of property damage.
The charges were laid following a string of collisions in Bridgewater back on April 22nd. That night around 9 p.m. a grey Chev Cavalier struck a vehicle on LaHave Street. An RCMP officer off duty at the time approached the driver of the Cavalier who fled the scene. The Mountie followed in his own vehicle. The Cavalier then struck another vehicle on Aberdeen Road, turned onto Hirtle Drive and ended up smashing into a residence on Hollingsworth Drive and damaging a car that was parked in the lot at Eastside Apartments. The Cavalier eventually went off the road on Streatch Drive where the driver ditched the car and fled on foot. Burton was arrested at his residence a short time later.

Crime Files

RCMP are keeping busy investigating a number of thefts in Lunenburg County. A number of items were taken from outside a residence in the New Germany area while the owners were away. The theft occurred sometime between Sunday September 27th and Tuesday, September 29th. Elsewhere a vehicle was damaged and items stolen while the vehicle was parked at the carpool parking lot at Exit 13 in Wileville. That incident took place Monday September 21st.


And Queens County RCMP are investigating a theft that took place at the Beech Hill Road in Hunts Point on the night of Tuesday, September 29th. The item taken was a large industrial type weedeater. It's described as a Honda, model UMK431. It has a red plastic cover over the engine and requires a shoulder harness which was not taken.

Vandals and Thieves

A number of mailboxes were vandalized in Oakhill sometime over the weekend. The mailboxes were damaged between the 400 and 500 block on the Oakhill Road between Sunday September 20th and the early morning hours of Monday, September 21st. RCMP are asking the public for assistance in solving the incident.. Meantime Liverpool RCMP are asking the public to come forward with information regarding two children's bicycles. The bikes were reported stolen from Liverpool on Sunday morning, September 20th One of the bikes belongs to a seven year old and is a red and black mountain bike. The other which belongs to an eleven year old is a silver mountain bike with some yellow and black stickers.

Police Post

It's inflatable and missing. RCMP are looking into a report of a boat stolen from Marriotts Cove. It has a white outboard motor attached and it went missing overnight Friday. Not locking their car doors ended up with a call to police. Also Friday night, someone rifled through a couple of vehicles parked at a residence on Summer Crescent in Bridgewater. Last Wednesday evening, a black Hyundai Accent was damaged in the Brigdewater Mall Parking Lot. It was parked near the "B" entrance. And overnight Tuesday, someone broke into a garage on Miller Drive. They stole a poulan power saw, delta mitre saw, an air compressor and a fishing rod.

Home Invader Jailed

A third Bridgewater man involved in a home invasion/robbery will be joining his co-accused behind bars. Twenty year old Joshua Lamont Mosher was sentenced to two and a-half years in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of robbery, wearing a mask and breaching his probation. Mosher was one of three people initially charged in the home invasion after three masked intruders forced their way into a Churchill Street apartment on the evening of October 24. They demanded money and assaulted a resident, then fired bear spray into the apartment before fleeing. The victim received only minor injuries. In July twenty year old Timothy Charles MacKenzie was sentenced to serve five years in prison for his role in the home invasion. Nineteen year old Matthew James Chase was also sentenced in July to a three years prison term.

Attempted Murder Fugitive Arrested

As a result of a double stabbing which occurred in the early morning hours of June 29th, 2008, the Bridgewater Police Service had been seeking a Lunenburg County man, Cory Kyle LANGILLE, 21 years of age.

Mr. LANGILLE was charged by police with two counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault and one count of Breach of Probation in relation to this incident. A Canada wide warrant was obtained that same date.

Two Lunenburg County men received serious, life threatening injuries which required hospitalization and surgery.

Bridgewater Police had received information Mr. LANGILLE was hiding in Alberta. The Alberta Sheriffs Fugitive Apprehension Team became involved in the search for Mr. LANGILLE. It was this team that located Mr LANGILLE in a south west Calgary apartment Friday, August 21st, 2009.

The unit with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service Tactical Unit surrounded the apartment and called upon Mr. LANGILLE to surrender himself. Mr. LANGILLE did so without incident.

Mr. LANGILLE has been remanded into custody in Alberta. Members of the Bridgewater Police Service will travel to Alberta to return Mr. LANGILLE to face his charges later this week.

Crime Warning

Shelburne County residents are being warned about a telephone scam making the rounds. A person identifying themselves as a grandchild or other loved one, says they are in trouble with a law enforcement agency and need a specified amount of cash wired to them to get out of jail. The caller will be accommodating and may provide a fraudulent law enforcement name. Any such incident should be reported to your local RCMP or Phonebusters.

Seized Drugs

A drug bust in Hubbards netted police 3 thousand grams of marijuana bud, 221 marijuana plants, scales and extensive grow equipment. Police also seized six assorted long rifles and ammunition. The search was conducted on the Fox Point Road Tuesday morning by members of the HRM Integrated Drug Section with assistance from the South Shore RCMP Street Crime Enforcement Unit, RCMP Federal Drugs Grow Team, and Nova Scotia Power . A 34-year-old male was arrested and charged with Cultivation, Possession for the Purpose, Theft of Power, Unsafe Storage of Firearms, and Possession of a stolen Nissan Pathfinder SUV. He'll appear in court at a later date.

Armed Robbery

Correction: Gold Reserves A.F.N. was the name of the business robbed at gunpoint. R-C-M-P incorrectly identified the business in both a news release and on the telephone when CKBW News called to question the business name they provided. - July 16/09 SBM

No one was hurt in a brazen armed robbery in Gold Reserve. RCMP Sergeant Paul Coughlin says there were staff and customers in the Gold Nugget Casino on the Beech Hill Road when the two masked men burst in around 10:10 Monday night. The two got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. A white Jeep Cherokee that was stolen earlier from a Chester Basin area business was used in the crime. It was found abandoned on a gravel road at the intersection of Beech Hill Road and Highway 103 Sergeant Coughlin says the suspects might have been picked up on the highway, or they could have taken off along the ATV trail. He says they are hoping someone noticed the two either before or after the armed robbery and that they get in touch with police. The Chester RCMP detachment is handling the investigation.

Rifle Arrest

A few tense moments Friday evening ended with RCMP arresting a 23-year old Shelburne county man who is still in jail. Around 6:15, police responded to a 9-1-1 call about a man walking along McGray's Avenue in Northeast Point with a rifle. As they were responding, they were told the man had fired several shots. When the members from Barrington and Shelburne detachments showed up, the man turned and ran away from police, throwing the rifle to the ground. Police chased him down and arrested him. He's been held in custody all weekend and will be brought to court sometime today. The Mounties say they are following up on reports of threats, pointing a firearm and break and enter. A woman who was taken into custody at a nearby residence was later released. No one was injured in the incident.

Jail Time

Being involved in a home invasion has landed a Bridgewater man five years behind bars. Twenty year old Timothy Charles MacKenzie entered guilty pleas to robbery and breach of an undertaking. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Friday but entered the pleas instead. Mackenzie was one of three people initially charged in the invasion of a Churchill Street apartment last October 24th. Meantime there are still court appearances pending for 19 year old Matthew James Chase who is due in court July 15th, and a September trial has been scheduled for 19 year old Joshua Lamont Mosher. Charges have also been laid against three others for being parties to the crime even though they didn't enter the home. Twenty three year old Timothy Barry Stewart returns to court July 13th, while a preliminary hearing has been set for November for 23 year old Sean Andrew Ivany. A warrant has been issued for 23 year old Matthew Kevin Glavine who failed to show for an earlier court appearance.
