Shelburne Crier Passes

He was a grown man who wasn't afraid to cry. In fact, he was one of the best. Residents and fellow town criers are remembering Perry Wamback as the loudest man in Nova Scotia. The 65-year old Jordan Falls man passed away at home on Monday. An electrician by trade, he won several town crying competitions including the Nova Scotia, the Atlantic, the North American Championship and International Championships in both Halifax and England. He was appointed the Town Crier in Shelburne in 1982 and was highly regarded for carrying on a tradition dating back to the 18th Century. Wamback is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Pam and Son Rob. A memorial service for the late Perry Ivan Wamback will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Shelburne Community Centre.

Shelburne Business Awards

The best in business in Shelburne county have been recognised at the Osprey Arts Center. Last night the Shelburne and Area Chamber of Commerce and the Shelburne County Business Development Center held their annual awards. The Community Service Award went to "Shelburne Association Supporting Inclusion". The Tourism Award went to Ocean Mist Cottages. The Green Award was won by Beandock Coffee and Collectables. Windward Flutes won the Export Achievement Award. Entrepreneur of the year was Pat Melanson of the Pipers Guild. And the Business of the year is the Whirligig Book Store. Congratulations to all of the participants and the winners from CKBW.

Ship Shape Support

The Town of Shelburne is getting a boost from the province to develop a festival and tourist attraction based on the history of loyalist longboats. The department of Economic and Rural Development committed nearly $47,000 towards the project. The theme of the new longboat festival will be based on last year's Loyalist Celebrations that helped establish the longboat as an icon for the area's tourism industry. The total cost of the project is about $130,000.

BMHS Terry Fox Run

On September 25 (starting at 1 pm) Barrington Municipal High School will be taking part in the annual Terry Fox Run, with staff and students volunteering their time and resources to keep Terry's Dream of a cancer free world alive. Last year all schools in NS raised $408,000 with our school contributing $4847.49, our goal again this year is to raise $5,000. Our route will start 1pm at BMHS and goes along Oak Park Rd. to Cross intersection (past the ESSO Garage) and travel along River Head Rd to Highway 3; Cross road at intersection and travel along Highway 3 to Oak Park Rd. Cross road at intersection and continue along Oak Park Road to the school turn-off. Continue along Oak Park Rd & back to BMHS. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Prizes will be awarded to the Top Pledge-getters, and Fastest Runners, in both Sr. and Jr. High. There will also be draws for other Door Prizes. To be eligible for these draws, students must collect at least $20.00 in pledges. All students and staff who complete the Walk/Run will receive a Certificate of Recognition.

Shelburne Pot

Two Shelburne county men with green thumbs have been caught red-handed by RCMP. Police say they arrested the two and seized 61 mature marihuana plants at an outdoor grow-op in the Upper Ohio area of the county. Corporal Nancy Mason says the 45 and 51-year old men were caught as they were tending their crop yesterday. Both are facing charges of production of marihuana and their court date is set for December 16th in Shelburne. Corporal Mason says the Street Crime Unit continues its work to eradicate outdoor grows throughout the county. But she says they can't always do it alone and they are asking the public to report suspicious activity to the RCMP or Crimestoppers.

Smokes Seized

Two Shelburne county residents are facing charges after RCMP seized over $12,000 in cash and 37,000 contraband cigarettes in a raid on Shag Harbour. Police entered the residence Wednesday night. A 33-year-old female was arrested at the scene. A 46-year-old man was later arrested in Barrington. Both individuals reside in the Shag Harbour area.The man and woman were arrested for possessing tobacco not stamped in accordance to the Excise Act and are scheduled to appear in Barrington Court on December 10th, 2009. Typically, fines for possessing illegal cigarettes in Nova Scotia have been around a dollar per smoke.

Crime Warning

Shelburne County residents are being warned about a telephone scam making the rounds. A person identifying themselves as a grandchild or other loved one, says they are in trouble with a law enforcement agency and need a specified amount of cash wired to them to get out of jail. The caller will be accommodating and may provide a fraudulent law enforcement name. Any such incident should be reported to your local RCMP or Phonebusters.

Black Loyalist Support

It was a big Community Welcome of the Amistad Freedom Celebration 175 on the Shelburne Waterfront today. And Gerald Keddy brought a present from Ottawa. The MP for the South Shore announced $13,700 for the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. Keddy says these events help people understand the history of slavery and allows residents commemorate and celebrate the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Concerts, tours of Freedom Schooner Amistad, a march from Shelburne to Birchtown, the Junior Leaders Freedom Camp, a reception honouring elders from the local African Nova Scotian community; and a display of quilts and art are all part of the festivities running through till Sunday.

Slip Slide

The workers at Shelburne Ship Repair are tired of waiting to hear when and if repairs will be made to the slipway. Union spokesman Gary Nickerson says it's at the point now they are not being certified to haul any more ships until major repairs are made. He says talks have been going on forever, and the Union has decided to jump in and try and get the ball rolling. Nickerson says they'll be meeting at 11:30 this morning with MLA Sterling Belliveau in Barrington to present their case and see if things can be speeded up.

Shelburne Job Concerns

Union members with Shelburne Ship Repair have started a petition to gather public support as well as taking their concerns to local politicians in Shelburne county. Municipal Warden Sherm Embry says council has written to Irving Shipbuilding and the Premier's office to ask for help in resolving outstanding issues. Embry says the municipal interest is advocacy for jobs in the Municipality of Shelburne. Irving currently leases the property in the Shelburne Industrial Park from Nova Scotia Business Inc.

Party Crashed

RCMP from two Shelburne county detachments had to be called in to break up a house party that appeared to have gotten out of hand. Sergeant Bob Forbes says officers from Barrington were called around one o'clock Wednesday morning to a complaint of assault. That was at a home on Highway 103 near Clyde River. Sergeant Forbes says there were around 200 people there when they rolled up. Beer bottles were thrown at the police cruiser and a fire was started on the highway. More officers were called in from Shelburne and Barrington as the party-goers spread out onto the highway. The RCMP and the homeowner closed down the party and moved the revellers along. One male was taken into custody and was later taken by ambulance to Roseway Hospital in Shelburne. He was treated for minor injuries and released. Sergeant Forbes says the scene was cleared by around two this morning. He adds members are still investigating and are still deciding if charges will be laid.

RCMP with the Shelburne Street Crime Enforcement unit say they seized two pounds of pot from a home on Highway 3 in Shag Harbour.  The Mounties executed the search warrant Monday.  Police say the marijuana was wrapped in 28 gram packages. They also nabbed about sixteen grams of hash in the raid.   A 38 year old Shag Harbour resident was arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking. Additional charges are pending for having unregistered firearms and unsafely stored firearms.  The suspect has a court appearance scheduled for August 27th in Barrington.

A long-promised expansion to a Shelburne county nursing home is now a political plank.  N-D-P leader Darrell Dexter pledged this morning to get the additional 50 beds open for those who need them, as soon as possible, regardless of the result of next month's election.  The MacDonald Conservatives have delayed the long-promised opening of Bay Side’s expansion by another three years.  In 2006, former Minister of Health, Chris d’Entremont, announced that Bay Side’s new beds would open in the fall of 2007.  In 2007, the opening date was changed to 2010.  Dexter adds Shelburne residents can't afford to wait any longer. He says Rodney MacDonald had a chance to deliver these nursing home beds and failed.  He made the comments campaigning with Sterling Belliveau in Shelburne Friday morning.

Car Thieves

RCMP say they've arrested several teenagers who they accuse of stealing cars in Shelburne county recently.  Early on April 10th, someone took a vehicle from King Street in Shelburne, ditching it in Lockeport. A mini-van was then stolen from Cliff street and was driven and dumped back in Shelburne.  Police say early last Saturday morning, someone trying to steal a vehicle from Brewhouse Lane was scared off by the owner. Over the next few hours, other vehicles were entered on Woodlawn Drive and ransacked.  They were able to get another vehicle started and took off.  An RCMP officer on patrol tried to stop a vehicle on Water Street for a minor violation. That's when the vehicle sped off on Highway 103 towards Liverpool.  Police, citing safety issues didn't follow.  Investigators say the joint work between Shelburne, Queens and the Forensic lab in Yarmouth helped them get the stolen vehicle back and identified several of the people involved.  But they say because they are being charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, none of them can be identified.

A 30-year old Barrington Passage man has been taken back to jail for violating the conditions of his parole.  Sergeant Bob Forbes says a woman called 9-1-1 around 5:30 Sunday morning.  She had left their home after allegedly being assaulted by her common-law husband.  Police arrested the man charging him with Assault and Possession of a Controlled substance.  He will be taken back to Provincial Court in Barrington for an appearance on May 21st.

A Shelburne county business owner is one of this year's nominees for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2009.  The Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Network will hand out the honour at a ceremony later this month (April 20th) in Halifax.  Terry Stewart of Terry's Accounting/Tax Centre, Shelburne County is nominated this year. He's competing against the owners of Sew Sweet in Canning; In Good Hands Massage Therapy; In-Thread-Able Design; Marshall Marks Cards and Creations and Perrier’s Concrete Homes all of H-R-M.  In its 11th year, the annual Entrepreneur of the Year Award recognizes and celebrates entrepreneurs with disabilities who have demonstrated business growth, innovation, passion and persistence.   EDN's 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year award recipient was Cedric Robicheau of Meteghan, who founded the multi-million dollar venture, BMC Seafoods.

Osprey Arts Support

A group supporting a Shelburne performing arts center is getting a financial boost from the Federal Heritage Department.  South Shore St. Margaret's MP Gerald Keddy announced 10-thousand dollars in funding for the Osprey Arts Center Association.  The money will help support the upcoming season which includes performances of dance, theatre, and music presented by more than 300 culturally diverse professional and emerging artists.  Keddy says the Osprey Arts Centre plays an important role in bringing diverse artistic experiences to the people of Shelburne County.  Artistic Director Susan Hoover acknowledges they are located in a remote community with few opportunities to access cultural activities. But she adds they are especially appreciative of the funds from the Government of Canada to help bring a variety of the best artists in Canada to their venue.  The Osprey Arts Centre was Established in 2003.
