Martin Finishes Fourth At NTL Toronto Event

It was a fourth place finish for Bridgewater's Jenna Martin at the second National Track League stop in Toronto. Martin ran the women's 400 metre event in 53.65 seconds. The 25-year-old finished almost two seconds behind winner Mary Wineberg of the United States. Martin was coming off a second place finish at the first NTL stop in Halifax earlier this week.

School Board: Chair Attends Review Meeting In Berwick

School Board members from across the province met in Berwick recently to continue the discussion of trying to improve the school review process. The province's education minister is looking for suggestions to move forward, what worked within the process and ideas for surplus schools. Board chair Jennifer Naugler attended the meeting and says shorter timelines for review, more collaboration and long-range planning were some of themes being presented. Naugler believes minor tweaks are needed.



Naugler says it was a valuable experience to exchange ideas with other board officials. She has sent correspondence to other board members on what was discussed at the meeting. Meanwhile, the education department will gather the suggestions and put them into a discussion paper by September. Parents, school boards and communities will then be asked for feedback before a new policy is put in place by next spring. Another review process meeting is planned for June 19 in Halifax.

Updated: Dog Owner Turns Himself In, Faces Charges

The owner of a dog that caused a serious bite to a female jogger last night in Bridgewater has turned himself into police. Constable Will Creamer says a 49-year-old man went to the station after hearing media reports about the incident. He adds, charges have been laid under the town's Dog By-laws. The incident happened around 8:15 last night on the Centennial Trail off LaHave Street. The jogger was sent to South Shore Regional Hospital for treatment of the bite. At the time, the dog's owner gave a false name and contact information.

Information Session Being Held On Former Blockhouse School

The former Blockhouse school will be the topic for discussion tonight during a public information session. Staff with the Municipality of Lunenburg will present details to residents on the proposed sale of the property. The former school has been leased by the South Shore Ventures Co-op since last year. The group is now trying to buy the property for less than market value. The co-op is working to transform the property into a sustainability and permaculture training centre. A meeting will be held tonight at the former Blockhouse school at 7pm.

MODL: Council Rejects Proposed Blockhouse Facility

The Municipality of Lunenburg has refused an application for a proposed construction and demolition debris facility in Blockhouse. Council rejected the matter by a 10-3 vote during Tuesday morning's council meeting. Halifax C and D was applying for a development agreement for the proposed facility along the Cornwall Road. The company now has the right to appeal the decision to the province's Utility and Review Board. Residents' spokesman Paul Young expects an appeal in the near future.



Halifax C & D hasn't indicated yet if it will appeal the decision.

Jogger Recovering From Bridgewater Dog Bite Incident

A female jogger is going to be OK despite an incident last evening (Monday) on the Centennial Trail in Bridgewater. She suffered a serious dog bite while running along the trail off LaHave Street. Constable Will Creamer of Bridgewater Police says the jogger needed emergency treatment at the hospital.



Rather puzzling is the fact the owner of the dog which was not on a leash provided fake contact information and now police want to talk to the person. The dog is described as about the size of a border collie, white with some black markings. Anyone who may have information about the dog, its owner or Monday night's incident is asked to contact Bridgewater Police right away. They should contact Sgt. Bridgewater Mayor Reflects On Chelli's Passing

A long-serving member with the town of Bridgewater was remembered at council Monday night. Christopher Chelli passed away earlier this month while vacationing in his home city of Guelph, Ontario. He was 62. Mayor David Walker says Chelli was a pleasure to be around.



Chelli worked for the town for 22 years as chief operator of the Waste Water Treatment Plant. He was also an active volunteer fire fighter in Bridgewater. A celebration of Chelli's life will be held at 3pm Tuesday afternoon at the town's fire department.

New Fund Helping Men's Health

A new initiative unveiled in Bridgewater today is committed to improving the health and wellness of men. The Blue Glove Fund is a not-for-profit agency that raises money for men's health. The fund has been set up to help bring mobile health clinics and education campaigns to rural areas of the province. Spokesperson Dan Hennessey says the fund will help Medibus visit communities.



Hennessey says there will be a hands-on approach plus awareness on men's health issues including testicular cancer, colon cancer and spinal-cord injuries. The fund is currently reaching out to local organizations and businesses for sponsorship to help its cause. A fundraiser will be held this Saturday from 12-4pm at the Bridgewater Mall. Minor Injuries After Car Goes Into Ditch Outside Bridgewater

A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital after a single vehicle crash Monday morning just outside of Bridgewater. Officials with the Oakhill Fire Department along with EHS were called to the scene around 11:20am along Highway 325. Constable David Cullen with Bridgewater RCMP says the woman's car went off the road and into a ditch. She was taken to South Shore Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Queens RCMP Look For Break And Enter Suspects

Several items have been stolen after an overnight break and enter in Queens County. RCMP are looking for thieves after a 2006 Black Nissan Murano, as well as a generator, chainsaw, bush saw and framing gun were recently stolen from an Eagle Head garage. Anyone with information should contact police in Queens.

Bridgewater Relay For Life Raises $89,000

Bridgewater's Relay for Life event has helped raise at least $89,000 towards cancer research. The leadership co-chair, Sarah Sweeny, says money is still funneling in from people since Friday night's event at the South Shore Exhibition grounds and they hope to get an official total before the end of the week. She says roughly 320 people participated in the event. Sweeny says there's five areas where the money will go.



Another Relay for Life event is planned for June 21 in Chester.

South Shore Soccer Teams Do Well In Weekend Action

MacKenzie Sinclair scored a hat-trick, pacing the South Shore United under-14 girls soccer team to a 3-0 win Sunday over XFC from the New Glasgow-Antigonish area. Kay Dorey earned the shutout. It was the team's home opener at Park View.  Meanwhile, the South Shore boys Under-16 team managed a 1-1 tie with Dartmouth United. Matt Quigley was the lone scorer for South Shore, which is now tied for 2nd place in its division.

More Stop Signs Popping Up In Lunenburg

The town of Lunenburg has brought in more stop signs to help improve pedestrian safety. The new signs are installed at two intersections on King Street, along Lincoln Street and Montague Street. The signs come into effect today. Town Engineer Marc Belliveau says the additional signs should make a difference.



Belliveau says drivers should use caution approaching and proceeding through the intersection while people adjust to the change.

NSCC Lunenburg Campus Celebrates Student Success Awards

Graduating students at the NSCC Lunenburg Campus will wrap-up their final week with an awards celebration. The campus will hand out its student success awards this evening in the campus gymnasium. Twenty-six awards will be given including monetary and gifts. Principal Craig Collins says it's an exciting time for the campus and its students.



Some awards include the ABCO award, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Bridgewater Community Christmas award. The awards celebration will begin at 6:30pm.

Martin Finishes Second At Aileen Meagher Event

Bridgewater's Jenna Martin finished second at the Aileen Meagher Track Classic in Halifax Sunday night. The 25-year-old ran the 400 metre event in 53.46 seconds. She entered the event as the defending champion. Martin will now turn her focus to the national track and field championships in less than two weeks.

A Bridgewater runner will try and make it two wins in a row at the Aileen Meagher Track and Field Classic in Halifax Sunday evening. Jenna Martin is the defending champion in the 400 metre event. She won last year in a time of 52.67 seconds before she travelled to London for the Olympic Summer Games.

Lumberjacks Forward Drafted Into QMJHL

A member of the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks has been drafted into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Sixteen-year-old Josh Shatford of Fox Point was selected in round 12, 212th overall by the Charlottetown Islanders. Shatford scored four goals and added 13 assists in 45 regular season games with the Lumberjacks last year.

Whalen Misses Out On Shot-put Final In Oregon

Liverpool's Chelsea Whalen narrowly missed the shot-put finals at the NCAA Division-One Track and Field Championships. The 20-year-old junior at Florida State University had a high throw of 16.32 metres, less than half a metre from a berth in the final nine. She finished in 13th spot at the meet in Eugene, Oregon. Following the shot-put, Whalen said she was a little disappointed because she was confident in her preparation and enjoyed success already this season. She adds, she's hungry for a podium finish next year and looks forward in building off of her results this week. Next up for Whalen will be the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick from June 20-23.

Wolter Finishes Sixth At NCAA Championships

Another great result from one of the best long distance runners on the South Shore. Conquerall Mills native Mattias Wolter finished in sixth place in the men's 3,000 metre steeplechase final Friday night at the NCAA Division-One Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The junior student at the University of Louisville finished in a time of eight minutes and 43 seconds. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Liverpool's Chelsea Whalen will compete in the women's shotput. The Florida State junior is hoping to end the event on a high note after struggling in the javelin earlier this week.

Shelter Program Hoping To Expand In Bridgewater

An update by a Lunenburg County emergency shelter program reveals they're hoping to grow the service in Bridgewater. Reverend Eric Campbell and Laura Uhlman with Inn from the Cold spoke to council recently about several ideas including advertising space on the town's website to help raise awareness. They are also hoping to have their own shelter instead of using different churches in the county. However, no formal request was made to council. Deputy Mayor Bill McInnis feels one consistent location would be a solution.



This is the fifth year of operation for Inn from the Cold. The officials estimated roughly 30 people used the service over the winter months. However, the group didn't provide any concrete figures.
