Baby Case Postponed

An adjournment in the case of the couple facing charges in the sudden death of a newborn baby boy. RCMP say the deceased baby boy was brought to Queens General Hospital Monday night. Twenty-four year old Amanda Lynn Oickle of Liverpool is charged with one count each of neglect to obtain assistance in childbirth and concealing the body of a child. She has been released on an undertaking and will return to court in Liverpool November 3rd to enter election and pleas. Oickle is to live with her parents and report in person to the Queens County RCMP every Friday and to have no contact with her common-law husband. Thirty-one year old Andrew Gary Cunningham is accused of one count of concealing the body of a child. He remains in custody until his next court appearance in Liverpool Tuesday, October 20th when a hearing will be held into an allegation of breaching a conditional sentence order.

Langille Remanded

A Lunenburg County man arrested late last week in Calgary on outstanding warrants for attempted murder will remain in a lockup until a court appearance next month. 22-year old Cory Kyle Langille was brought into the new Justice Center yesterday afternoon where he agreed to being remanded until September 16th. His legal aid lawyer said he needed time to review the material he'd received from the Crown. Langille is facing two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with a pair of stabbings in Bridgewater in June of 2008.

Jail Time

Refusing to comply with court orders to abstain from alcohol along with assaulting his ex and making harassing phone calls to her has landed a Lunenburg County man behind bars for five months. Forty-four year old Jeffrey Wayne Warner admitted he has an alcohol problem and when he drinks he gets into trouble. His latest charges stem from incidents going back to last May when RCMP responded to an assault complaint in Hemford. Warner kicked in the bedroom door and pushed his girlfriend who then said she was leaving. He threatened to use an axe on anyone who came to pick her up. As a result of that incident he was ordered to have no contact with the woman, but last July 22nd he called the woman 12 times and sent 50 text messages. While the Mounties were at the residence taking the complaint Warner called the woman another 10 times. The Crown consolidated a number of breach charges involving a no contact clause and the consumption of alcohol. Following his jail term, Warner will be on probation for a year with orders to take counselling for substance abuse and spousal violence. He is also prohibited from contacting his former girlfriend.

No Plea

A Bridgewater man facing a number of charges relating to a series of hit and run crashes in April still hasn't entered pleas. Forty year old Stephen Richard Burton appeared in Bridgewater Provincial Court yesterday and his case was set over to August 12th. His lawyer says he's still awaiting outstanding disclosure from the Crown. Burton is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and one count of property damage. The charges were laid following a string of collisions in Bridgewater back on April 22nd. That night around 9 p.m. a grey Chev Cavalier struck a vehicle on LaHave Street. An RCMP officer off duty at the time approached the driver of the Cavalier who fled the scene. The Mountie followed in his own vehicle. The Cavalier then struck another vehicle on Aberdeen Road, turned onto Hirtle Drive and ended up smashing into a residence on Hollingsworth Drive and damaging a car that was parked in the lot at Eastside Apartments. The Cavalier eventually went off the road on Streatch Drive where the driver ditched the car and fled on foot. Burton was arrested at his residence a short time later.

E-I Fine

A hefty fine for a Lunenburg man who defrauded Employment Insurance over a 20 month period. Thirty-nine year old Leonard Clarke pleaded guilty to 39 counts of EI fraud between October 2004 and May 2006. He was fined $200 on each count for a total of $7,800. Clarke was also placed on house arrest for 6 months as part of a conditional sentence. Authorities say Clarke also received Workers Compensation benefits and was working some of the time he filed for unemployment. EI is recovering the fraudulent payments internally, and Clarke has already repaid more than $6,000.

A Simpsons Corner man facing charges of impaired driving three months after being sentenced on a same charge has asked for time to see a lawyer. Forty-seven year old Randall James Durling was fined $600 February 23d . He had been set to go to trial on a charge of impaired driving causing bodily harm, but changed his plea to a lesser offence of impaired driving. The initial charge stemmed from a collision in Nineveh in December 2007. The latest charges were laid May 22nd when Durling was stopped in New Canada. Along with the impaired and breathalyzer counts, Durling is also charged with operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, and possession of marijuana.  He's scheduled to be back in court June 24th.

A Terrance Bay man has been fined 2 thousand dollars for having undersized lobsters aboard his vessel last November.  Forty-eight year old Kevin George Slaunwhite pled guilty  saying it was not intentional, but rather his son was not properly measuring the crustaceans.  Fishery Officers boarded Slaunwhite's vessel in Terrance Bay last November 29th and found 14 undersized lobsters in three crates.  The Crown agreed the smaller lobsters were not segregated and it was more a case of inaccurate measuring than a deliberate attempt to violate the fishery regulations.  Two of the undersized lobsters seized as evidence were forfeited to the Crown.

A Lunenburg County man who claimed he was growing marihuana for his medicinal needs has been fined a thousand dollars and placed on probation for a year.   Sixty-nine year old Anthony Edwin Eisnor was charged after RCMP found 24 marihuana plants growing in a tomato patch at a residence on the Newburne Road last September 5th.  Eisnor suffers from Barker's Syndrome, a form of kidney disease. He told the court he was using marihuana as a necessary medication. His lawyer said Eisnor takes up to 30 separate pills and undergoes dialysis once a week.  Court was told he previously had a medical exemption to use marihuana but his present doctor disagrees with the practice.  Judge Jim Burrill told Eisnor maybe he should be looking for another doctor.
