Buy-Sell Agreement In Place For Former Riverport School

The former Riverport Elementary School is close to being sold. A company called "Yard-Arm" has made an application to the planning advisory committee outlining what they plan to use the building for. The plan includes developing the building into a micro-brewery. Municipality of the District of Lunenburg Mayor Don Downe says it should be a good addition to the community.



Downe says its still early in the process but he's encouraged by the steps that have been taken with a number of hurdles left to go including public meetings. The building has been closed and boarded-up since it ceased operating as a school two years ago. The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg has been paying insurance on it ever since, in the amount of about $100,000 a year.

Halifax Woman Drowns In LaHave River

Lunenburg County RCMP say a 71-year-old woman is dead after she drowned in the LaHave River Sunday night. Sgt. Derek Smith says the woman witnessed by neighbours entering the water and not coming back up. They attempted to rescue her with a sea-doo and brought her to shore. EHS was called but she could not be resuscitated. The incident happened around 9pm in the Dayspring area. He confirms the woman was from Halifax and an autopsy will be performed. Fire officials also responded to the call. Smith adds there's no indication of any suspicious activity.

Police Search For Alleged Gold River Gunman

A man is recovering in a Halifax hospital and another is being sought by police after a weekend shooting in Gold River. The 31-year-old victim was shot in a home in the community Saturday evening after a fight between two men.  RCMP say the victim and the suspect know each other.  They've issued an arrest warrant for 60-year-old Ronald Lorne Paul of Gold River.  He's facing numerous firearms charges and aggravated assault.  Paul is described by police as 6-feet tall, weighing 162 pounds with grey hair and hazel-colored eyes.  Police say if you have any information on Ronald Paul's whereabouts, you should contact the local RCMP detachment, or contact Crime Stoppers.  The number for Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers is 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), text TIP202 + your message to 'CRIMES' (274637) or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.

Updated: Missing Man Found

The Bridgewater Police Service says a man that's been missing since last Thursday has been found. Constable Will Creamer says John Forward was identified by a member of the public around 7am Sunday morning. He was found in the Cookville area. The 46-year-old was taken to South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater for assessment. He has since been reunited with his family. Police thank the public for their help in locating the man.

Bridgewater Police Search For Missing Person

The Bridgewater Police Service is asking for the public's help in locating a missing man. Police say 46-year-old John Forward was last seen by family members Thursday evening. Constable Will Creamer says in a release that Forward suffers from undisclosed medical problems and may not have medication with him. Forward may wearing a light grey hoodie sweater with red stripes on the sleeves.

South Shore: Aquaculture Consultations Kick Off Monday

The Nova Scotia government will begin public consultations next week as it looks to update aquaculture standards in the province. Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau announced the creation of a panel in May tasked with recommending new regulations to govern the industry by the end of next year. The panel will be led by two environmental law experts from Dalhousie University in Halifax. They will be advised by a seven-member committee with representatives from industry and environmental groups, the Mi'kmaq and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. The government has about 20 public meetings planned across the province. Meetings are planned to be held later this month in Shelburne, Lunenburg, Liverpool and Yarmouth.

Local consultation session: Sessions will be 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. at each location.

Local Golfer Runner-Up In Championship Tourney

Bridgewater's Ryan Nowe has finished second at the provincial Junior Golf Championship, which wrapped up Thursday at Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney. The 17-year-old fired a two-over, 73 to finish four shots behind champion Bruce Tomie. With the result, Nowe has been named to team Nova Scotia for the upcoming Canadian Junior Golf Championships in Subury, Ontario from July 30 to August 2. Nowe also secures a berth in the CN Future Links Atlantic Championship in Antigonish from July 16-18. He's also been named to team Nova Scotia for the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec in August.

Video Training Cuts Costs & Travel For Consturction Workers

Construction workers and small businesses across the province will have better access to training because of  provincial funding. A new video system will deliver customized training to more than 750 commercial construction businesses across the province. The construction industry employs more than 30,000 Nova Scotians. It is estimated that 7,000 more skilled workers will be needed over the next decade. NDP MLA Becky Kent says providing accessible training, particularly for small businesses in rural areas, will help to make businesses more productive and make sure that workers have the skills they need for the job. The Construction Association of Nova Scotia will deliver the video-based training, which will cut travel costs, be easier for workers and allow more time for coaching and mentoring new employees. In 2011, the province released its workforce strategy. Key parts of the strategy include supporting learning and skills development, and enhancing opportunities for success in the workplace.

Gas Prices Rise Even More Than Expected!

Gasoline prices are way up this morning at South Shore pumps. The utility and review board has increased the price for a litre of regular self serve to $1.36.5. Thats an overnight jump of 6.5 cents. Diesel is up by almost 4 cents to $1.34.4. High test gas is selling this morning for $1.45.5 a litre. That too is an increase of 6.5 cents.

Bridgewater Wins Kraft Celebration Tour

Bridgewater has won the much-talked-about "Kraft Celebration Tour" contest and an impressive $30,000. for improvements to Kinsmen Field in the town. The results were revealed last night on TSN's Sportscentre. Bridgewater garnered more than 223,000 votes to beat Windsor's Aquatic Club by a margin of 2 to 1. Bluenose RV will also chip in $5,000 after a challenge was issued by company owner Darren Young earlier this week. The town will also host a live episode of Sportscentre in the near future. The Seahawks football club submitted the nomination for the Kraft contest. Some of their members stayed up all night Wednesday voting for their submission. By the way, the Windsor Aquatic Club received just over 104,000 votes.

McIntosh, Whalen Post Top 12 Results In Russia

Liverpool's Chelsea Whalen finished in 11th spot in the women's shot-put at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.  The 20-year-old qualified for the final Wednesday and had a high throw of 15.52 metres in Thursday's medal round. Meanwhile, Bridgewater's Rachael McIntosh placed 8th in the women's heptathlon. McIntosh finished with 5,589 points in the seven-category event. The score is listed as a personal best for the 22-year-old.

Lunenburg: Planned ER Closure At Fishermen's

Early word about two pending ER closures. The Fishermen's Memorial Hospital Emergency Department will be closed beginning Friday evening at 6pm and lasting until 7:30am Saturday morning. It will also be closed from 6pm Saturday until 7:30am Sunday morning. The closures are due to a staff shortage. South Shore Health advises anyone requiring emergency services to call 911 or visit the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater. Patients with non-emergencies should contact their family physician or call Health Link 811 for medical advice.

Plans For Public Park In Petite Rivere Moving Ahead

Support for a public park in Petite Riviere is growing but more work is needed before it becomes a reality. The Municipality of Lunenburg is prepared to kick-in $30,000 to help develop a long desired park for the area. That money would compliment a $25,000 investment already announced by the Nova Scotia government. Mayor Don Downe says remediation work needs to take place on the site where the park would be located. He says the community also needs to fund raise.



The park is expected to cost in the area of $90,000. It would be located at the former Covey Island Boatworks store which was destroyed by fire.

Seafood Company Awarded Loan To Expand

A Lunenburg County business will be able to ramp up its product and hire some new staff. Cedar Bay Grilling in Blandford has been awarded a $100,000 business loan. They will use the funds to increase productivity to meet national and international demand for its products which include planked salmon.They will also add a second production line that will assist in the packaging of salmon burgers and appetizers. South Shore St. Margaret's MP Gerald Keddy made the announcement Thursday. The loan is being provided through ACOA.  The initiative is also projected to create seven part-time jobs that the company hopes will become full-time positions by 2014.

Local Dancers Turn In Solid Performance In Montreal

The South Shore was well represented at the Scot Dance Championship Series National Highland Dance Competition in Montreal. Dancers from McKinnon Dance of Bridgewater competed in a number of events, bringing home a number of Gold Silver and Bronze Medals as well as Top 7 finishes. Megan VanderWal won gold, silver and two bronze medals. Angela McKinnon, Rebecca Jordan and Emerald Lake all received silver medals and Eva Purcell McIntyre won two bronze medals all in their respective categories. Emerald Lake of Lunenburg also received a 5th place finish in the Canadian Inter Provincial Championships. Other Dancers finishing in the Top 7 include; Amelia Cook, Madison Greek and Laurel Genge. Coach Angela McKinnon says all the dancers worked hard to get to the competition and to have Emerald Lake finish with a fifth in the Inter Provincial Championship is quite amazing”. The dancers competed at different levels and in different age categories in Montreal from July 3rd to July 7th.

NS Liberals Target South Shore Ridings

Nova Scotia Liberals are focused on the South Shore this week. As a lead-up to a provincial election, expected to be called at anytime but not likely until the fall or even next spring, Liberal leader Stephen McNeil is here to discuss issues with, and learning more about, the concerns of area voters. He also wants to make sure the Liberal machinery here is in place and ready to go to work in an election campaign.



McNeil says high power rates and cuts to education and health are having the biggest impact on the daily lives of South Shore residents. He wants to change that if his party forms the next provincial government by eliminating Nova Scotia Power's monopoly and cutting excessive administration costs for education and health.

Gasoline Prices Expected To Take A Big Jump!

Hold on to your hats! Gas prices could head through the roof tonight. Today in New Brunswick, prices have shot up dramatically. Regular self serve there is selling for 5.3 cents more per litre. Diesel has increased by 3.5 cents. Stand by for the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to jack up prices by similar amounts at midnight tonight. The big jump in gas prices here is a result of whats happening on the world market. The world price of oil continues to climb after ending yesterday at its highest close in 16 months. Oil is trading at $107.32 U-S a barrel. The price has jumped 14 per cent in the past two and-a-half weeks. Traders point to rising demand in the U-S and upheaval in the Middle East.

Wolter, Whalen Qualify For International Finals

Liverpool's Chelsea Whalen has qualified for the shot-put final at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. The 20-year-old had a top throw of 15.36 metres, good enough for a chance to throw for a medal. The shot-put final will be held later today. Meanwhile, a Conquerall Mills native has set a new provincial record in the steeplechase. Tobias Wolter ran the 2,000 metre steeplechase event in five minutes, 51 seconds at the IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine. With the time, Wolter also qualified for tomorrow's final.

Nowe In Contention To Win Provincial Golf Title

Bridgewater's Ryan Nowe remains in the hunt at the provincial junior golf championship. The 18-year-old shot a third round three-over par 74 yesterday at Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney. Nowe had two birdies and five bogeys on the scorecard. He begins today's final round tied for second place, three shots behind leader Bruce Tomie of Northumberland Links.

South Shore: Funding For Electronic Drug Dispensers

Some new technology will help local nurses administer medication through a safer and more efficient system. Electronic drug dispensing cabinets are coming to hospitals throughout the South Shore. The Nova Scotia government announced $2.4 million dollars to help purchase ten cabinets. Half of the money will be given to South West Health. Health Authority CEO Peter Vaughan says they help reduce waste by tracking and controlling inventory.



It's expected the dispensers will be in place in both health districts by the fall.

Kraft Celebration Tour-Getting Set To Vote!

The time for voting is drawing near as the South Shore Seahawks look to secure $25,000 towards improvements to Kinsmen Field. The multi-use field in Bridgewater is up against the Windsor Aquatic Club for the right to host the Kraft Celebration Tour. It would also mean a community spotlight and live broadcast of TSN's Sportscentre in the town. Seahawks Vice-President, John Peters, says they need all the votes they can get.



Meanwhile, a Bridgewater businessman wants to help with improvements to Kinsmen field. Darren Young of Bluenose RV is planning to ante-up 5-thousand dollars should the town be selected for the Kraft Celebration Tour. He says Kinsmen Field has a special place in his life.

Nowe Sits Four Back At Junior Golf Championship

A Bridgewater native sits in fourth place heading into round three today of the Nova Scotia Junior Golf Championship. Ryan Nowe shot a seven over-par, 78 Tuesday at Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney. The Osprey Ridge golfer followed up an opening round score of one-under with one birdie, six bogeys and a double bogey. He sits four shots back of leader Myles Creighton of Digby Pines. Cole Mulrooney of Chester Golf Club is nine shots off the pace in ninth place.

BREAKING: 40 Year-Old Dies In Police Custody In Queens

Mounties in Queens County say a 40-year-old man has died in custody. Police were called Monday at around 11:15 p.m. to a report of an intoxicated man on Riverhead Road in Port Mouton. In a media release, RCMP say officers found the man laying on the ground, and paramedics came to the scene and assessed him before he was taken to a police cell in Liverpool. Shortly before 2 a.m paramedics were called to the RCMP detachment in Liverpool after the man was found unresponsive. He was taken to the Queens General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death, and the matter has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team for investigation. Team leader Ron MacDonald says the investigation will centre around how often officers checked on the man.

Commercial Building Might Replace Popular Car Wash

A commercial building might soon replace a popular car wash in Bridgewater. Bond Street Capital wants to construct a single story building on the property of Melissa's Stop and Wash. They have applied to enter into a development agreement with the Town of Bridgewater to allow for the construction of the 4,400 square foot complex. Mayor David Walker believes it could be a nice addition to the downtown area.



However, it not yet known who the tenants of the commercial building could be. A public hearing on the matter has been set for August 12.

Cafe 12 Pulls Application For Library Building

What will become of the Bridgewater Library building will head to a vote next month. Cafe 12 officially withdrew their application to lease the building from the town. The community group was hoping to keep the building public by opening up a coffee shop at the King Street location. However, Cafe 12 says their proposal has created too much division in the town regarding who should occupy the building. Meanwhile, town council will decide if they should sell or maintain the library building in August. Councillor Michael Graves says he want the town to keep the building.



The library on King Street will move into the LCLC when construction on that facility is finished later this year.

Family of Five OK After Supper-Time Fire

A family of five is alright after supper-time fire in West Clifford. The fire started in the kitchen around 5 o'clock yesterday and quickly became more intense and spread. A 28 year-old man suffered some smoke inhalation. His partner and their three children were able to escape the home without injury. Several fire departments were called to helped fight the fire - including members from Tri-District Fire, Wileville, Hemford, Midville and Hebbville. The home suffered significant smoke and water damage. No word on the exact cause of the fire.

Old School Methods Still Work In Caledonia

A Caledonia couple is being recognized for their old school approach to maintaining their woodlands. Georgie and Helen Uhlman have been named the 2013 Western Region and Provincial Woodland Owners of the Year. A former heavy equipment operator, Georgie maintains his 52-hectare woodland using only horses. Much of their harvest is for furnace wood, although they sell hemlock, spruce and pine logs to a local sawmill. The Uhlmans estimate that more than 70 per cent of their woodland is used for recreation such as sleigh rides, barbecues and horseback rides.  Henry and Elaine Van Berkel, who live in Antigonish County, are the Eastern Region winners and Faye Crawford, of Pictou County took Central Region honours.

Two Vehicles Catch Fire In Liverpool

There were fireworks of sorts in Liverpool last night. A car parked on some private property in the downtown core mysteriously burst into flames around 10:30pm. RCMP say the fire was so intense, it spread to another car parked nearby. Mounties say they aren't expecting to lay any charges in relation to the matter. Corporal Victor Whalen says the Fire Marshal's Office were called in to investigate and it was determined the original fire may have been caused by a defect in the car. No injuries were reported.

Weekend: Double Fatal In Yarmouth County

Two men are dead after their truck crashed into a log pile on a gravel road in Yarmouth County. RCMP say the men were driving in the Kemptville area Sunday when the driver lost control of the truck and it crashed. Both men, aged 36 and 38, were taken to hospital where they died from their injuries. Their names have not been released, but police they were from the Yarmouth area. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

South Shore: Health Authority Focus' On Doctor Recruitment

Do you have a family doctor? It's a question a number of South Shore residents answer with a "no". However, Vice President of Health Service Janet Simm says the local health authority is working hard to attract more doctors to the region. She says over the past year they've assigned more staff to work primarily in the area of doctor recruitment.



Another five to seven doctors will be needed to staff Bridgewater's new collaborative emergency centre. The health authority is looking to Dalhousie University to try and fill some of those positions.

Bridgewater's Lohnes Wins Gold At Judo Nationals

A Bridgewater native has won gold at the Canadian Judo Championships in Richmond, B.C. . Whitney Lohnes finished in first place in the senior women's 48 kilogram division. The 20-year-old defeated Ontario's Lea Sheffield in the final. Lohnes will try and make it double gold when she competes in the under-21 category on Sunday.

Martin Finishes Second In Victoria Event

Bridgewater's Jenna Martin wrapped up the National Track League series with a second place performance. The 25-year-old ran 52.55 seconds in the women's 400 metre event at the Victoria International Track Classic in B.C. Mary Wineberg of the U.S won in a time of 51.71 seconds.

Shelburne County Man Facing Drug Charges

A Shelburne County man remains in custody after appearing in court to face drug charges. RCMP found a quantity of marihuana and packaging materials allegedly utilized for marihuana distribution while searching a home along Highway 3 in Woods Harbour Thursday. Twenty-six year-old Thomas Anthony Foster Nickerson was arrested without incident. He is charged with possession of marihuana for the purpose of trafficking and breach of a court order. Nickerson appeared in court Friday, where he was remanded to custody until July 8th in Yarmouth provincial court.

Gas Prices Rise Again

Gas prices are up again today. Regular self serve is selling at South Shore pumps for $1.30.1 per litre.  That's an increase of just over a cent. High test has gone up by a similar amount to $1.39 per litre. Diesel has also increased in price to $1.30.8. That is about 1.5 cents higher than yesterday. Gas prices in the Halifax area are traditionally about half a cent lower than those on the South Shore.

White Point Wins Marketing Award For Main Lodge Rebuild

White Point Beach Resort has picked up a marketing award for rebuilding their main lodge. The Queens County destination received the award recently in Halifax at the Atlantic Interactive Marketing Conference. The resort used different methods to gather ideas for the main lodge including facebook, twitter and online blogs. They also used construction webcams to keep the public involved in the building process. Marketing and Product Development Manager, Donna Hatt, says it's a special award for the resort.

Groups Seek Volunteers For Maintenance Work At Gaff Point

A pair of conservation groups are doing some maintenance work to the Gaff Point trail in Lunenburg County and are looking for some extra help. The Nature Conservancy of Canada, along with the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy are in need of volunteers to cut extra brush, put in boardwalks where water has collected and move trail boundaries where cliffs are starting to erode. The work will be done to roughly one kilometre of the three-and-a-half kilometre trail. A coordinator with the NCC, Doug van Hemessen, says it's routine work that's done every year.

MODL: Council Debate Road Signage Policy

The Municipality of Lunenburg is directing staff to look at all options before implementing a road signage policy. Councillors debated the issue earlier this week, with some of those in favour saying the policy needs to be in place to help emergency service vehicles locate a scene quickly. Those against the issue don't want to see tax bills increase to affected property owners. John Veinot agrees safety needs to be considered but voted against the matter.



The mayor feels the municipality should be setting a standard that is acceptable throughout the district. Don Downe says they're going to explore if there's potential partnership opportunities.



Currently, 163 roads are without proper signage.

'Afterglow' Arts Event Looking To Return To King Street

A local arts and culture event is looking to return to the streets of Bridgewater. Ashton Rodenhiser recently presented to town council about hosting 'Afterglow' on King Street towards the end of September. Over 50 artists participated in last year's event, providing dance or theatre performances, film and video or mobile art. Rodenhiser says it's about bringing people to the area.



The Afterglow group is looking for in-kind support from the town including use of electrical outlets, provide event banners and be covered under the town's liability insurance. Council referred the matter back to staff to look at the financial impact of the group's request.

Acadia Broadcasting Applies To Purchase Moncton Station

Acadia Broadcasting is moving to add another radio station to its stable. The parent company of CKBW/HANK-FM has filed an application with the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission to purchase CKNI-FM - News 91.9 in Moncton from Rogers Broadcasting. The Saint John based company currently owns ten stations here in the Maritimes and Ontario. Vice-President Jim MacMullin says he looks forward to bringing our brand of community focused, quality local radio to Moncton. The CRTC is expected to rule on the application later this year.

Deadline Today For Yarmouth Ferry Proposals

Today is the deadline to submit business plans for a proposed revival of the ferry service between Yarmouth and Maine. The provincial government will make the results known tomorrow. The minister of economic and rural development and tourism, Graham Steele, will outline the submitted proposals and where things go from here. The government previously extended the deadline for business plans by two weeks. The government rejected two bids earlier this year, saying neither met the criteria for a viable operation.

15th Annual 'Hit It For Health' Raises $28,670

A sold out 'Hit It For Health' golf event helped raise $28,670 towards a new fetal monitor at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater. One hundred and forty-four golfers teed-off Wednesday in the event at Osprey Ridge. Development Officer, Bernadette Jordan, says a new monitor costs roughly $30,000, so they're really close to purchasing it. She says it's time for a new one.




She also praised the community for their support.



This is the 15th year for the event, and Jordan says it has raised more than $400,000 towards the purchase of necessary equipment.

Lohnes Chasing Double Gold At Judo Nationals

A Bridgewater judoka is hoping to build off of two bronze medals from last year's Canadian Judo Championships. Twenty-year-old Whitney Lohnes says her goal at nationals this year is double gold. She will compete in the seniors and women's under-21, 48 kilogram divisions. The national competition gets underway Thursday in Richmond, B.C. .

Local Historian Offering Brookside Cemetery Tours

Former business owners, community leaders and prominent women will be the subject of guided tours from a local historian. Peter Oickle is offering the tours at Brookside Cemetery to local residents who want to learn more about the people who made an impact on the town. He says the tours will look at more than just people.




The first tour will be held Thursday evening around 6:50pm at the Brookside Cemetery. Tours will also be held July 11, August 1st and August 8th. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the Desbrisay Museum or people can bring exact change to the tour and pay there.

VIDEO: Crews Douse Vehicle Fire In Bridgewater

No injuries after a car caught fire in the parking lot of the Bridgewater Days Inn. The incident occurred around 10:45 Wednesday morning. Fire Chief Michael Nauss says the female driver noticed smoke coming from underneath her hood and pulled into the hotel parking lot. He says there was very little smoke coming from the vehicle when it was first reported.



Town police and EHS also responded to the call. Video below shows fire officials dousing the vehicle, to make sure the blaze was out.

Chester School Receiving New Tablets In The Fall

A Lunenburg County school is benefiting from a pilot project funded by the Nova Scotia government. Roughly 90 grade seven students at Chester Area Middle School will receive new tablets in September. The $1-million pilot, announced by the Department of Education, will teach math by providing students free online lessons in the Khan Academy program. Director of Programs and Student Services with the South Shore School Board, Jeff DeWolfe, says he's happy a local school was one of four selected across the province.



The exact cost per tablet isn't known because the school will select the model that works for them. DeWolfe says its a one-year project, but is hopeful the project will be carried over at the end of the year based on student success.

Liverpool Parking Meters Headed For Quick Fix

The cost of repairs has been growing since payment-card parking meters were installed four years ago in Liverpool.  A design flaw has created confusion for drivers. They've been clogging the meters with coins instead of the specially-designed cards. Region of Queens Mayor Christopher Clarke says there's a quick fix.



Each time a parking meter has been clogged by a coin, it costs $100 to repair and those repairs have been mounting. All meters should be safely accepting coins and tokens in a couple of weeks. By the way, tokens can be purchased at the Region of Queens municipal office.

Charges May Be Laid After Gold River Incidents

Two people are in custody in connection with an incident Tuesday night in Gold River. The RCMP say the two men were arrested after a couple of assaults. They say the two incidents were related. Investigators have released few details other than to confirm the arrests. Its not known if anyone was injured. The RCMP say charges are pending.

Former Lumberjacks Forward Recruited By Royal Military College

A former CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjack will continue his hockey career at the Royal Military College of Canada. Luc Ramey will suit up in the Paladin red and white after he was recruited by the school. Ramey scored 35 points in 49 games with the Lumberjacks last season. He was also awarded the 100 per cent award by the club during the team's year-end banquet.
