Bailey Cracks Moose Lineup, Playing Tonight Against PEI

A Lunenburg County native is suiting up with the Halifax Mooseheads tonight for the first time. Brennan Bailey has cracked the herd's lineup for this evening's home contest against the PEI Rocket. The 19-year-old was acquired by the Moose at the trade deadline from the Pictou County Weeks Crushers of the MHL. In a text message, Bailey says he's both nervous and excited to dawn the Mooseheads jersey. He says he will wear #6 while manning the blue line during tonight's game. Puck drop is at 7pm at the Halifax Metro Centre.

Bridgewater Police Arrest Man On Outstanding Warrant

Bridgewater Police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a home invasion in Lunenburg County. Constable Will Creamer says 27-year-old Stephen Heisler was taken into custody Sunday in Bridgewater. The home invasion occurred last July. The man also had a warrant out for his arrest for assault causing bodily harm. Heisler has been remanded into custody and will appear in Bridgewater court tomorrow.

Queens Skate Park Group 'Overwhelmed' By Council Support

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in support is music to the ears of the Queens County Skate Park Association. The group received $200,000 from Region of Queens council along with $35,000 worth of land. However, it does come with some stipulations including construction to start before July 1, 2016 and the group needs to collect at least 90 per cent of the money needed before it can start building. Vice-President of the Association, Ian Kent, says he's in favour of the guidelines.



Kent says the group is overwhelmed with the support from council. The 20,000 square feet of land designated for the future skate park is located near the Queens Place-Emera Centre. The total project is expected to cost roughly $780,000. The group has applied for a provincial health and wellness grant and held local fundraisers to try and gather further funding towards the project.

Mustangs Face Must-Win Scenario Against Valley

It's win or go home tonight for the South Shore Mustangs. The local major midget hockey club must win this evening to stay alive in their best-of-seven series with the Valley Wildcats. The top-ranked Valley club holds a 3-0 series advantage. The two teams square off at 7:30 tonight at the Bridgewater Arena.

Bounty Hearing Begins In Virginia

A nine-day probe into the sinking of the Lunenburg-built HMS Bounty begins today in Portsmouth, Virginia. The U.S. Coast Guard is convening the hearing after the ship took on water off the coast of North Carolina last October, killing two crew. The coast guard rescued 14 crew members after they abandoned the ship in two life-rafts. The hearing is set to run until February 21st.

Chester Man And Woman Appear In Liverpool Court

A man and woman from Chester will appear in Liverpool court this morning on various possession and trafficking charges. Twenty-nine-year-old Brendan Gregory Levy and 27-year-old Jennifer Andrea Corkum were arrested last week during a vehicle stop near Exit 8 on Highway 103. Lunenburg County RCMP seized crack cocaine during the arrest and also found marihuana and prescription drugs during a search of a home on Collicutt Road in Chester. Police also seized other items at the home in connection with the investigation. The two accused will both be in court at 9:30.

Chester: Tax Bill Waived For Hubbards Yacht Club

Chester council has awarded a tax exemption to the Hubbards Yacht Club. The Yacht Club has been in existence since 1967 and provides a youth sailing program for young people in the Hubbards and Chester areas. Deputy Warden Floyd Shatford says it's important to support these types of initiatives in the municipality.



Members of the club are settling into their new facility in Fox Point which just opened last summer. The building is used for classroom instruction, meetings, community events and boat storage. The club's tax bill for the year was nearly $7,000. The request was given unanimous approval.

Park View Girls Curling Team Qualify For Provincials

The Park View girls curling team has qualified for the provincials. The team, skipped by Raquel Bachman, won the Western Regions NSSAF Curling Championship in Bridgewater today defeating Forest Heights 8-5. Bachman's team will now compete against the best in the province from March 21-23 in Chester. Forest Heights is hosting the event.

NSP: Satisfied With Weekend Storm Response

A spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power says the South Shore gave them the most challenges over the weekend. Neera Ritcey says Yarmouth, Shelburne and Barrington were the hardest to deal with because of the wind and type of outages. She says some of the power restorations in those areas were slowed down due to the bad weather and travel restrictions. Overall though, Ritcey feels the utility responded well to the conditions.



She says crews worked round the clock to try and restore power to about 250 residents in the Shelburne-area overnight Saturday. Ritcey says NSP will continue to analyze the situation and improve their contingency plan going forward.

Queens Manor Closed Due To Flu-Like Symptoms

Queens Manor in Liverpool is closed until further notice because of flu-like symptoms. A large number of residents have developed symptoms and the manor remains closed to visitors and family. An official at the manor says it's difficult to say when it will re-open.

Valley Takes Commanding 3-0 Series Lead Over Mustangs

In Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoff action last night in Bridgewater, the Valley Wildcats shutout the South Shore Mustangs 10-0. The win gives the Valley team a commanding 3-0 lead in the best of seven quarter final series.  Game four goes tomorrow night at 7:30pm in Bridgewater.

Flemming Defeats Murphy For Brier Berth

Mayflower's Paul Flemming is heading back to the Brier. Flemming claimed the Provincial Molson Mens Tankard yesterday in Truro with an exciting 8-7 win over Lakeshore's Jamie Murphy. Flemming opened up a 6-1 lead after four ends but the defending champ fought back to even the score before Flemming took one in the tenth to clinch the title. It's Flemming's sixth provincial crown. He'll be joined by former Chester Junior champ Graham Breckon, Kelly Mittlestadt,  and Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc at the Tim Horton's Brier in Edmonton beginning March 2nd.

No Injuries After House Fires In Shelburne County

As if a snowstorm, hurricane force winds, storm surges and power outages weren't enough for Shelburne County, there were also a pair of house fires over the weekend. A man and his adult son escaped unharmed from one blaze late Saturday in their home on Sandy Point Road, about eight kilometres south of the Town of Shelburne. No word yet on a cause of the fire. Meanwhile, a woman was forced from her home by a fire around 4 a.m. Saturday in Barrington. There was considerable fire, smoke and water damage to the home and firefighters think it began around a wood stove. The woman wasn't hurt and is staying with nearby relatives for now.

Flu Restricts Visitors At Shoreham Village Nursing Home

A visitor restriction remains in place at Shoreham Village nursing home in Chester. CEO Brian Selig says a handful of residents have been affected by the flu while almost a dozen others have shown symptoms. The restriction has been in place since late last week. Selig says they're working hard to limit the disease from spreading.



He says only immediate family are allowed to visit their relatives at the nursing home. Selig is hopeful the visitor restriction can be lifted in a week.

School Review: Public Hearings Begin This Week

The future of six rural schools on the South Shore will be discussed during a series of public hearings set to begin this week. The first hearing will focus on Pentz Elementary and is set for tomorrow night at the school. Members of the South Shore Regional School Board will make a decision on whether to continue to maintain some of the smaller schools identified on the review list based on criteria and enrollment  Public hearings for schools in Mill Village, Petite Riviere, New Ross, Gold River-Western Shore and Hebbville Academy will also be held this month. Each meeting will be held at the respective school up for review and begins at 6:30PM. The smallest school based on enrollment that's up for review is Mill Village with 54 students while Hebbville Academy is the largest at 538 students.

Mustangs Host Valley In Critical Game Three

The South Shore Mustangs will try and dig themselves out of an 0-2 deficit in their playoff series tonight against the Valley Wildcats. The top-ranked Valley squad won the first two games at home and will travel to Bridgewater for game three. The game starts at 7pm.

StormCentre: Region Hit Hard By Latest Snow Storm

Residents of the South Shore are shoveling out their driveways after a large snowstorm hit the region over the weekend. The storm system knocked out power for thousands in parts of Queens, Lunenburg and Shelburne Counties. The outages forced emergency officials to open up comfort centres in Lockeport and on Cape Sable Island. Power was restored to most Nova Scotia Power customers last night after blizzard and storm surge warnings were finally lifted. Meanwhile, storm surges caused significant flooding in Liverpool and on Dock Street in Shelburne. There's still no word on damages to the historic waterfront.

Curling: Finals Set At Tankard In Truro

It'll be defending champ Jamie Murphy of Lakeshore against Mayflower's Paul Flemming in today's Molson Mens Tankard Final in Truro. Murphy advanced last night with a 10-6 win over Mark Dacey. On Saturday, Flemming topped Murphy 8-6 to earn a spot in the title match.  The final starts at 2 o'clock. The winner will represent Nova Scotia at the Brier in Edmonton next month.

Yarmouth - Very little snow accumulation.

Argyle - Flooding of one road in Pubnico during storm surge. (normal for this area). Road now okay.

Barrington/Clark's Harbour - Major storm surge. 1-2 metres. Several roads were awash at 8:30 but all are back open now. Wharf debris washed up on some roads. No one was a risk and no one was isolated. Anywhere with an eastern exposure was affected. Power outage has resulted in a comfort centre being opened at 11 am in Centerville Community Centre. ETR for outage is 11 pm.

Shelburne - Similar conditions as Barrington. All roads are back open now. TIR reported that storm surge is the biggest that they have seen in this area since Ground Hog day storm in 1976. All getting back to normal.

Queens County - Lower parking lot area of Liverpool flooding but this is normal. Western Head Causeway that was destroyed by Hurricane Bill had a couple of the 2000 lb barriers breached. These blocks were used to repair the causeway and have held up until today. Road is passable.

Lunenburg County - Flooding near Sobeys in Bridgewater at height of storm surge but this is typical. 25 cms of snow and still falling.

StormCentre: Serious Flooding Along Shelburne Waterfront

A number of communities along the South Shore are dealing with flooding due to elevated sea-levels due to storm surge. In Shelburne, officials with the municipality took to Twitter this morning to ask residents to stay home and away from Dock Street. StormCentre: Lengthy Power Outage In Barrington

A lengthy power outage in the Barrington area has forced emergency officials to open a comfort centre on Cape Sable Island. EMO co-ordinator Jim Newell says the centre will be set up at the Centreville Fire Hall. Nearly 2,000 residents of the Barrington area have been without power for more than eight hours. According to Nova Scotia Power's outage map, crews hope to restore electricity late tonight (11PM). The outage is due to high wind gusts and snow. Newell says it will give people a warm place to stay and ride out the storm. He says they will offer residents some coffee, tea and light refreshments.

StormCentre: Dozens of Stores Closed & Events Postponed

Dozens of businesses and stores are closed today as blizzard and storm surge warnings remain in effect for the South Shore. Crews are working to clean up nearly 15 centimetres of snow that fell overnight in Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne. Forecasters are predicting another 30 centimetres of snow today for parts of Nova Scotia. Some areas of Queens and Shelburne counties are being whipped by winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, cutting visibility to almost zero. Numerous flights have been cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The Maritime Bus Company has cancelled all of it's morning routes. Here is a complete list of cancellations

StormCentre: Power Outages, High Winds, Cancellations

High winds are behind power outages and tricky driving conditions throughout the South Shore. Roughly 8,000 Nova Scotia Power cutomers are without electricity this morning. The largest outages are in the Barrington, Pubinco, Shelburne and St. Margaret's Bay areas. Meanwhile, snow clearing crews are working hard to knock down massive snow drifts in many areas of the South Shore. The region is waking up to high winds and white out conditions after about 15 centimetres of snow fell overnight. Forecasters are predicting 30 to 40 centimetres of snow today for parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and up to 30 centimetres for Prince Edward Island. Some parts of Queens and Shelburne are being whipped by winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, cutting visibility to almost zero. Dozens of today's flights have been cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. StormCentre: Full Coverage Of Weekend Storm

Environment Canada has issued blizzard and storm surge warnings for the South Shore. The weather agency says snow will begin late this evening and dump up to 15 centimetres on Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne counties. The forecasts is calling for wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour for some coastal areas of the South Shore early tomorrow morning. Another 25 centimetres of snow is predicted to fall throughout the day on Saturday. Forecasters are also warning drivers of potential white-out conditions over the next 24 to 36 hours. Meanwhile, the EMO office in Shelburne is reminding residents of the area to be prepared for a major storm system packing heavy snow, wind and unusually elevated water levels. Shelburne: Woman Charged With Drug Trafficking

A 25-year-old woman from Shelburne County faces charges after she was pulled over by RCMP Thursday night along Highway 103. Shelburne County RCMP stopped the vehicle around 10:30pm in the Port Mouton area. Police seized six capsules of a substance believed to be ecstasy and approximately 200 grams of marihuana. Stephanie Janice Benham was arrested without incident and is charged with Possession and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. She is scheduled to appear in Shelburne Provincial Court March 13.

Shelburne: Drug Bust In Barrington, Pot Seized

Police in Shelburne County have taken down an indoor marihuana grow op. RCMP say they seized thirteen mature plants, 500 grams of harvested stalk and about 70 grams of bud. They made the find after searching a home in Barrington on Thursday. Police say a 34-year-old Shelburne County man was arrested at the residence and later released. He will be charged with production, possession and trafficking related charges. The accused is due in Barrington court next month.

South Shore: RCMP Seize Crack Cocaine After Traffic Stop

Lunenburg RCMP have seized an slew of drugs including some crack cocaine following a traffic stop near Exit 8. Police say two people were taken into custody after they pulled over a car last night around 6:30PM. Later that night, police conducted a search of a home on Collicutt Road in Chester and seized marihuana, prescription drugs, and other items in connection with the investigation. Twenty-nine year-old Brendan Gregory Levy and 29 year-old Jennifer Andrea Corkum of Chester are facing various possession and trafficking charges. Both of the accused had a court appearance earlier today in Bridgewater.

Queens MLA Uncertain About Her Future

At least one South Shore member of the provincial legislature is uncertain about her future. Queens NDP MLA Vicki Conrad says family will weigh heavily on her decision whether to run in the next election. She says its going to be a tough decision because she also happens to like her job of representing the people of Queens County.


Conrad was first elected to the legislature in 2006 and was re-elected in 2009 and hopes to make-up her mind about running again within a few days.

Chester, Barrington Kick-Off Junior 'C' Playoffs

Two South Shore Junior 'C' hockey teams will begin their playoffs tonight. The first place Chester Clippers welcome the Fundy Phantoms to the Eleanor Pew Morris Arena at 7:15pm. Also, the Barrington Sea Star Ice Dogs and Clare Lions hook up for game one at the Barrington Municipal Arena. Game time is 8pm. Meanwhile, the South Shore Wild begin their playoffs on the road Saturday night against the Spryfield Silver and Black Attack.

Long-Time LaHave River Ferry Operator Dies

A Lunenburg county native who operated the LaHave Ferry for nearly 35 years has passed away. Brady E. Himmelman was captain of the ferry service from 1948 until 1982. The long-time native of LaHave was an avid golfer, community minded and loved helping others. Himmelman was honoured by the Nova Scotia government in 2010 when the new $3.5 million dollar ferry bearing his namesake was christened during a ceremony in July. Captain Himmelman is survived by his wife, Romona and four daughters.

Chester Delay's Zoning Request For Health Centre

Council in Chester has delayed making a decision on a rezoning request for "Our Health Centre". The collaborative care project would be constructed in Shoreham Village, however, the current bylaws do not permit such a facility in that area of Chester. The area needs to be zoned "Institutional" before construction on the project could begin. Warden Allen Webber says they need to look at tweaking the municipalities streetscape plan in order to make the change in their zoning bylaw.



Some of the loopholes centre around where the parking lot would be located in the overall design of the proposed facility. Webber says he doesn't see deferring a decision on the rezoning request as any type of stumbling block for the project.

South Shore Health: Take Caution Around Queens General Hospital

South Shore Health is asking people to use extreme caution when visiting Queens General Hospital. The health authority says a combination of snow, ice, mud and construction vehicle traffic has created messy and slippery conditions in the parking lot. Facility Planning Director, Margo Walsh-Leaman, says people need to be careful when they're on the property.



Traffic is also being temporarily re-routed at the hospital so an underground pipe can be installed. People are encouraged to follow the designated signs when visiting the hospital.

PC Leader Calls For Insulin Pump Program If Elected Premier

Those money-losing Tim Horton outlets in Halifax hospitals should be closed and the 1.4 million dollar subsidy they're receiving be re-directed to fund a provincial insulin pump program for diabetic children. Thats what the province's PC's are committed to doing if elected to power in the next provincial election. Leader Jamie Baillie says kids under 19 need the support to improve their lives.



Nova Scotia and PEI are the only provinces in Canada that do not provide funding for insulin pumps for diabetic children. Baillie says if he's elected premier, this province will be struck from that list. Canadian country music star George Canyon, who's from Pictou, joined Baillie this morning in announcing the proposed program. Canyon has been a Type 1 diabetic since he was 14 and says life would have been much easier in those earlier days if he had been outfitted with a pump.

Chester Council Supports Sea Cadets Program

Chester council will lend a helping hand in support of their local sea cadet program. Councillors voted unanimously to purchase $250 worth of tickets toward the Toronto Maple Leafs alumni game set to take place at the Chester Arena later this month. The tickets will then be given to the pro kids program in the municipality and distributed to deserving children. Deputy Warden Floyd Shatford says the donation is for a great cause.



The 351 Llewellyn Sea Cadets program is trying to raise money for a trip to Chester, England later this year. The Leafs alumni game is a part of a fundraiser for the cadets program and will be held on February 26.

Forest Heights: Construction On Skilled Trades Centre Begins In March

A future skilled trades centre at Forest Heights is nearing the start of construction. Director of Operations with the local school board, Steve Prest, says a tender was awarded to Rikjak Project Inc. of Lunenburg and S P Dumaresq Architect of Halifax. The two companies will be on-site starting their work on March 1st. Prest says construction is expected to last until the end of May.



The project cost is roughly $283,000. The construction of the skilled trades centre is considered the number one priority by the operations department. Roughly 300 students attend Forest Heights.

Boiler Issue Causes Smoke To Funnel From Bridgewater Elementary

An issue with one of the boilers caused large volumes of smoke to pour out of Bridgewater Elementary this evening. Crews with the Bridgewater Fire Department received the call shortly after 5pm of a possible chimney fire. But, members quickly realized a boiler wasn't firing correctly, causing smoke to funnel out of the school. Deputy Chief Andy Wentzell says they handled the situation quickly.



Wentzell says a technician solved the issue with the boiler. Roughly 20 firefighters were on the scene at the time. No one was injured.

Retired Principal's Child Porn Case Delayed Until March

The former principal of a Lunenburg area school will return to court next month after he was charged with possessing and accessing child pornography last summer. Brian David Jobb was charged in August after police searched a home in Lilydale. The 62 year-old did not appear in court today in Bridgewater but was represented by his lawyer. Jobb retired as principal of Lunenburg Academy in 2006. The matter has been set aside to March 6th.

Mooseheads GM Pleased With Brennan Bailey

The general manager of the Halifax Mooseheads says he's pleased with how Brennan Bailey is adjusting to his role with the club. The 19-year-old Lunenburg native was called up to the Mooseheads from Pictou County in the MHL at the trade deadline, but has yet to play a game. Cam Russell says the club has a lot of talent at the moment and Bailey is currently the 7th or 8th defenseman on the team's depth chart. However, Russell says Bailey is working hard and getting some quality practice.



Russell says Bailey could see some ice time before the playoffs if the Mooseheads clinch first place and rest some of their players. The herd face a tough test at home tonight when they host the second place Rimouski Oceanic at 7pm.

MODL: Council Against Lobster Fishery Quota

The Municipality of Lunenburg is saying no thanks to a quota system for the inshore lobster fishery. The decision was made after it was revealed that former Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea proposed the idea in response to low prices and high supply in this year's lobster season. Currently, each boat operator has a certain amount of traps they can use during the season. A quota would limit the catch. Mayor Don Downe says council is against a quota.



Council has decided to write letters to the Fisheries Minister, local member of parliament Gerald Keddy, other MPs from Nova Scotia, MLAs and the UNSM opposing the matter. The letters will also show support for the fishery's current practices and conservation measures.

StormCentre: Heavy Snow, High Winds Expected This Weekend

Another winter storm system is expected to rock parts of Nova Scotia on the weekend. Environment Canada has issued a special weather advisory for Saturday. The weather agency says high winds and potential heavy snowfall is expected throughout the province. Meteorologists say it's too early for good estimates of snowfall amounts, but up to 40 centimetres of snow is possible in some areas. We'll know more of what kind of conditions to expect on the South Shore as we get closer to the weekend. Special weather bulletins have also been issued for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

SPTS-Local Teams Clash On The Hardwood

The Shelburne Junior Boys Basketball team beat Lockeport 59 to 41 Tuesday night in a Tri-County game played in Shelburne. Cody Carter led the Green Wave (Lockeport) with 12 points. Brendan Balcom had 24 points and Skye Buchanan had 14 in leading Shelburne. The final league game of the season will be played Thursday night at 6 with Shelburne hosting Drumlin.

Birdsall Running Again In Lunenburg

The MLA for Lunenburg says you can count her in as a candidate in the next provincial election. New Democrat Pam Birdsall says a highlight of her past three and a half years as an MLA is the passing of her private members bill dealing with death certificates. Nurse practitioners are now able to sign one if a doctor isn't available. Birdsall tells CKBW/HANK FM News she wants a second term to pursue more projects for her constituents. Birdsall says besides, she loves the job.



Birdsall also says she's helped spearhead a move for better upkeep on many of the constituency's roads. Birdsall was first elected to the Nova Scotia legislature in 2009. She says she's like everyone else with no knowledge of when the premier may call the vote. However, she says she's ready to go.

SPTS-Local Hockey Teams Lose Games

A dominant performance by the Truro Bearcats Tuesday night in Bridgewater as they dumped the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks 8-3. The Cats broke the contest open with a four-goal third period including three in 77 seconds. Shawn Boudreau had two goals for the Jacks who were outshot 54-25. Bridgewater look to snap their seven game slide tomorrow in Liverpool when they host the Campbellton Tigers.

Chronic Condition Support Group Starting In Bridgewater

A volunteer with South Shore Health is starting up a support group for people who have been or are affected by chronic health problems. The Chronic Condition Support Group is pegged as a place where people can open up and learn positive ways to cope with their condition. Facilitator Tom Burt says sometimes people need to reach out and communicate with others.



Burt says it will be an open forum led by those who attend, and could feature guest speakers from the health authority. The discussion is free to join and is for people suffering from any chronic condition including cancer, heart disease or diabetes. It will be held on the first Wednesday of each month. The group will have its first talk Wednesday evening at 7pm in the community room at the Bridgewater Superstore.

Two Lumber Trucks Collide Near New Germany

There were minor injuries after two big rigs collided on Highway 10 near New Germany this morning. RCMP in Lunenburg County says the collision occurred just before 9 o'clock. Both 18 wheelers were transporting some lumber at the time, but they didn't loose their cargo. Police say one of the two male drivers was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Mounties are investigating the cause of the crash.

Chester: Council To Discuss "Health Centre" Zoning Change

Chester council will host a pair of public hearings Wednesday to deal with two separate issues. The first public hearing surrounds the construction of a proposed radio telecommunications tower for the Western Shore Fire Department. The tower would be located on the department's property in Western Shore. The second meeting is to deal with a rezoning request for the proposed "Our Health Centre" project in Shoreham Village. The current zoning bylaws do not permit such a facility in that area of Chester. Organizers are in the midst of a major fundraising drive to raise $6 million for the project which would be home to six new doctors offices. The meetings will be held consecutively beginning at 7 O'clock at the municipal office in Chester.

Shelburne: 80-Unit Seniors Complex Moves Forward

Construction on an 80 unit seniors complex in Shelburne is set to begin in April. The $7 million project will be located in Sandy Point and feature two apartment buildings - home to 40 units in each building. The Seniors Independent Housing Initiative has been working to bring a seniors complex to the area for nearly three years. Chair Joan Bowers says there is a great need for seniors housing in the Shelburne area.



Bowers says the project is attracting a lot of interest and those who have committed to the units can expect to move into the complex by August or September. The project is being developed by Atlantic Baptist Senior Citizens Home Inc.

Federal Dollars For Hubbards Hooked Rug Museum

A Hubbards based charitable organization has been given federal funding to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. South Shore St. Margarets MP Gerald Keddy has announced nearly $10-thousand for the Hooked Rug Museum of North America Society. The museum's mandate is to mount displays of the history and evolution of hand-hooked rug hooking in North America, starting from its early development within the original boundaries of old Acadia. The money will help members present an exhibit of 12 hand-hooked rugs depicting the history of the War of 1812, with a focus of the experience of women on the East Coast during the conflict. A commemorative event will officially open the museum and its War of 1812 exhibit on June 15th.

SPTS-Local-Hurricanes Win Spud Hockey Tourney

The BMO Western Hurricanes played in the PEI Spud tournament this past weekend in Charlottetown and came away victorious. They have been crowned the bantam tournament champions. They went 6-0 during the tournament, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 39 goals for and only 6 goals against. They beat the top team from PEI 6-0 and the top team in New Brunswick in the final championship game.

 

Lunenburg Restaurant Only Temporarily Closed: Owners

The owners of Trattoria Della Nonna say there doors will open again in due time. In an emailed statement to CKBW/Hank-FM News, Guenther and Susan Reibling say they are only temporarily closed because their operating partners are moving on. The email goes on to say that after being open for six years, absorbing substantial losses, dealing with the tripling of property taxes, and several minimum wage increases, they need to adjust opening times. The Reiblings confirm all employees have been put on employment insurance until February 7th, when their partners were hoping to re-open. The email states they have started searching for a new chef and hope to re-open later this spring. However, no firm date for re-opening was given.
