NS Power CEO Visits Bridgewater Chamber

The cost of keeping the lights on will be front and centre during a business luncheon on Thursday in Bridgewater. Nova Scotia Power CEO Rob Bennett will be the guest speaker tomorrow at an event organized by the Bridgewater and Area Chamber of Commerce. Bennett is expected to discuss the ongoing need for the province to reduce its reliance on coal and their focus on renewable energy projects. There are now 174 wind turbines in Nova Scotia, 125 of which are independently owed. However, power rate increases will likely dominate the discussion as hikes of three percent are expected over the next two years. Bennett has been touring the province as part of a series of formal and informal discussions about how NSP is changing. The event is being hosted at the Best Western.

Bowater Transition Team Calls For More Public Input

The group trying to help transition former Bowater employees into other jobs is encouraging them to continue the flow of thoughts, ideas and concerns. More than 300 people lost their jobs back in June when the Brooklyn mill closed. The Transition Advisory Team has produced an open letter to communities updating its work and what its learned so far. Team Chair Ron Smith says its a challenging time for many of the laid-off Bowater workers.

Charges Laid In Yarmouth County Home Invasion

Charges have been laid in connection with a weekend home invasion and assault in Yarmouth County. RCMP say 26-year-old Nicholas Wayne Mood is facing charges including break and enter, assault with a weapon and threat to cause serious bodily harm. Officers responded to the incident at a home on Highway 1 in Darlings Lake around 5:40 Monday morning. They say a 26-year-old man and a dog were assaulted during the forced entry and suffered serious injuries. A 23-year-old woman who was also inside the home wasn't hurt though.

VIDEO: Martha Seabury Launches In Lunenburg

After two years of work, the Martha Seabury is now in the water. The schooner is one of two being built by Dawson Moreland and Associates along the Lunenburg Waterfront. Hundreds of people showed up to watch the boat get christened and launched into the water. Captain Daniel Moreland says its a great moment for Lunenburg.



The 48-foot schooner still needs lots of work before it can sail including rigging and installing masts. During the launch, Lunenburg mayor Laurence Mawhinney shared one of his favourite nautical verses before the vessel hit the water.



The schooner is owned by Hollywood actor Billy Campbell and named after his grandmother. He says it make sense to name the vessel after someone he loved.


The Martha Seabury is expected to sail down the coast to Newport for a boat show in September.

Drug Bust: Police Seize Pot Plants & Firearm

RCMP have seized 275 marihuana plants and a firearm after a weekend raid in Shelburne County. Police say they discovered the plants after they blitzed a remote camp in Upper Clyde River on Saturday. It took officers six hours to collect all the pot plants while they executed a search warrant. Corporal Nancy Wilson says the seizure is a good reminder that marihuana harvesting season is around the corner. She says police will continue to dismantle grow operations in an effort to keep illegal drugs off the street. Police say the camp was unoccupied at the time of the seizure but a production charge is expected.

Crews Battle Fire In Queens County

Firefighters in Queens were kept busy over the lunch hour due to a fire in Western Head. Crews were called to battle a fire at a home near the intersection of College Street and Shore Road. The fire broke out just before noon. No word on what caused the blaze or extent of damage. Members from Liverpool, North Queens and Greenfield were on the scene for more than an hour.

Mayor's Race Filling Up In Yarmouth

The campaign trail is getting crowded in Yarmouth. At least four potential candidates have emerged to seek the mayor's job in municipal elections. Byron Boudreau was the latest to announce his intentions during a speech in Yarmouth last week. Boudreau currently serves as the deputy mayor on town council. Business consultant Pam Mood and former mayor Charles Crosby have also announced their intention to run for job. Crosby announced in July he would try to win back the mayor's position. During an event in Yarmouth in May, mayor Phil Mooney told CKBW News he would seek re-election.

New Military Figures Coming To Bridgewater

A second batch of Canadian military action figures are about to land in Bridgewater. The Army, Navy and Air Force collectibles were first released on the South Shore in December last year, but sold out quickly. Now, new figures including ones decorated in Arctic, desert and green camouflage will be available for purchase. One dollar from each sale will go to the Soldier on Fund for military personnel and families of injured members. The figures are expected to be sold at Miller Optical in the Eastside Plaza, starting on Tuesday.

Myra Seeks Re-Election In Lunenburg

A veteran councillor in Lunenburg will seek re-election in municipal elections this fall. Jamie Myra has confirmed his intentions to re-offer for a seat on town council. In a press release, Myra says he wants to be a part of a new team in Lunenburg to help move the town forward. Myra has served as a councillor for the past 12 years and calls the grand opening of Bluenose Academy a 'proud moment'. He says the school is a benefit to the educational growth of youth in the town and a tremendous addition to existing infrastructure. Municipal elections will be held October 20th.

Injuries Result From Yarmouth County Home Invasion

RCMP are investigating a weekend home invasion and assault in Yarmouth County. Officers responded to the incident at a home on Highway 1 in Darlings Lake around 5:40 Monday morning. Police say a 26-year-old man and a dog were assaulted during the forced entry and suffered serious injuries. They say a 23-year-old woman who was also inside the home wasn't hurt. Police had been looking for a 26-year-old man who suffered from injuries, but he has since been located and is receiving medical attention.

Baillie Tells Dexter Government To Not Meddle With Constituency Review

An independent commission tasked with drawing new Nova Scotia electoral
boundaries will hold its second round of public meetings starting today in Port Hawkesbury. The commission was forced to revise its interim report last month after the province's attorney general said it did not comply with the legislature's terms of reference. The commission's revised report calls for the elimination of three ridings and the creation of two new constituencies for a total of 51 seats, down from 52. The province's PC leader Jamie Baillie is again calling on the government to back off and stop pressuring the commission to determine the future of ethnic and cultural ridings.



The public meetings will be held in various communities across the province until August 16th, with the final report due August 31st.

Several People Homeless After Riverport Fire

A weekend fire in Riverport has left five people homeless.  The four adults and one child are staying with relatives for now and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross ..... things like emergency purchases of clothing and food. There were no injuries in the blaze at 3601 Riverport Road. There is no word yet on a cause. The names of those left homeless have not been released either.

RCMP Clock Driver Doing 160km/hr In 80 Zone

A man is facing serious fines after allegedly going double the posted speed limit in Lunenburg County. Police had set up a radar gun on Conquerall Road when a driver approached them and clocked in doing 160 kilometres per hour. The posted speed limit is 80 km/h. RCMP say they pulled him over and seized the man's vehicle. He was also charged with a form of reckless driving by operating a motor vehicle on the highway in excess of 50 km/hr over the maximum posted limit. The maximum fine is $2,400.

BREAKING: Martin finishes 7th; Will Not Advance To Final

It wasn't meant to be for Jenna Martin. The South Shore Olympian gave it her all but finished in 7th place in her semi-final heat this afternoon in London. Martin ran 52.83 seconds, well off her personal best time of 51.53. The 24-year-old never quit, running hard right to the end to finish her race. Martin, will now soak in the rest of the Olympics, and planned to do some sight-seeing once her event was complete. She is also expected to take in the closing ceremonies.

B.C.'s Svensson Wins Canadian Junior Golf Title

The Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship is heading back to British Columbia. Adam Svensson shot a 7-under, 64 in today's final round at Osprey Ridge to win the title by two shots over defending champ Kevin Kwon of B.C. and Ontario's Luke Moser. Svensson finished the tournament the only golfer to finish under par. His total was 1-under. Local golfer Matt Gallupe finished in a tie for 35th while Ryan Nowe tied for 58th. With the win, Svensson earns an exemption into this year's Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, taking place August 7-10 in Cumberland, Ontario.

Home Invasion: RCMP Lay 36 Charges in Lunenburg

Police have laid 36 charges against four individuals after a home invasion last week near Lunenburg. The accused forced their way into a home on Kissing Road Bridge and beat two men with baseball bats. In addition, eight others were sprayed with bear spray. The charges include aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, break and enter, mischief and multiple breached. Two men have been served with court documents while two others remain at large.

Fire Ban Lifted Across Nova Scotia

A ban on open fires in all areas of Nova Scotia has ended. However, the Department of Natural resources is urging reisdents to continue using caution when having fires in or around woodlands. Spokesperson Jim Rudderham reminds everyone that it is still fire season, and to have the means to control or extinguish their fires. A provincial burning permit is required when having a fire within three hundred and five metres of the woods. Landowners should also contact a municipal government office to see if they require any additional permits.

Bridgewater and Caledonia will host viewing party's for Jenna Martin semi-final race on Saturday. The event will be held at Town Hall in Bridgewater and at the Fire Hall in Caledonia at 3:30PM. Martin will run at 4:00PM our time with a chance to earn a berth in the final of the women's 400 metre sprint.

Lunenburg: Zwicker Changes Mind - Seeks Re-Election

A veteran councillor in Lunenburg has changed his mind and will re-offer in the upcoming municipal elections. Peter Zwicker announced in June he was set to walk away from municipal politics. However, Zwicker says he's changed his mind after residents encouraged him to stay at the municipal forefront. In a press release, Zwicker says he wants to build strong relationships with neighbouring municipalities. Zwicker has spent the last eight years on town council in Lunenburg. He believes the town will need a veteran council to help move the town forward.

Slight Change In Gasoline Prices

Fill'er up? When you pop by your favourite service station today to gas up, you'll notice very little change in prices. For instance, the price of a litre of regular self serve is unchanged at $1.27.3.  Diesel is down a bit though.  Its selling at $1.28.5. Thats a cent and a half lower than yesterday.

Jenna Martin is one step closer to an Olympic medal. The 24-year-old finished third this morning, running 51.98 seconds, good enough to move ahead to the women's 400 metre semi-finals. Close to 80 people showed up to Bridgewater town hall to watch Martin run. Mayor Carroll Publicover is proud of Martin's accomplishment.



Martin will run her semi-final tomorrow at 4:05. Bridgewater town hall will open its doors once again to broadcast the event. Doors are expected to open around 3:30pm. Montreal's Knight Leads After 54 Holes At Osprey Ridge

A Montreal golfer has a one stroke lead heading into today's final round at the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship at Osprey Ridge. Daniel Knight sits at one-over-par after 54 holes, ahead of Ontario's Luke Moser and Ryan Borg. Local golfer Matt Gallupe is nine shots behind the leader at 10-over-par. Ryan Nowe is also in the field, in a tie for 65th. Meanwhile, British Columbia captured the Inter-Provincial Team Championship title with a playoff win over Ontario. The team event takes the best two of three player scores each day over the first 36 holes. Nova Scotia finished fourth.

UPDATED: Two-Vehicle Crash On Highway 103

Three people have been taken to South Shore Regional Hospital with minor injuries after a two-vehicle collision. The incident happened just after 1:30 this afternoon between exits 11 and 12 on highway 103. The two vehicles hit each other head-on. Cpl. Jamie Vacon says the weather conditions weren't great at the time of the crash.



RCMP were forced to close down one lane of the highway for a short period of time to clean up debris. Cpl. Vacon says one car ended up off the road as a result of the collision. Mahone Bay and Blockhouse Fire Departments were also on scene assisting RCMP.

Hebbs Cross Resident Declares Candidacy For School Board

A new face has decided to make a run at becoming a school board member. Jennifer Naugler will vie for a seat in district four. The mother of three from Hebbs Cross has served in a number of groups including president of Hebbville Academy's home and school association and as a school advisory council representative. Naugler says she's up for the challenge of being a board member.



The URB has reduced the size of the school board from 12 to 8 members. Naugler is confident a new, smaller board will be better suited.



She feels she is a strong candidate because she has children in the school system and could see how decisions would affect students. School Board elections will be held October 20.

CKBW/HANK-FM News will air an exclusive interview with Jenna Martin, the 24-year-old Olympian from Bridgewater, Friday morning on both radio stations. The interview focuses on Martin's time spent in London so far, describes the athletes village, her preparation and the support she has received from South Shore residents. The interview will run at 7:40 Friday morning before the two-time Canadian champion runs in London. She is scheduled to run in heat three, lane seven at 8:16 our time at Olympic Stadium. A live blog will also be set up on our website, beginning at 5am Friday morning, to wish Jenna well and interact about the race.

Martin Anxious For Olympic Run

The countdown is on as Jenna Martin prepares for her first run at the Olympics. The 24-year-old is done her training and waiting for her moment in the London spotlight. She is scheduled to run in heat three at 8:16 Friday morning. Martin says the nerves haven't hit her yet.




Martin says she will go through her routine today before the big race.

Meanwhile, residents of North Queens will gather for a viewing party at the Caledonia Fire Hall Friday morning for Martin's run. The fire hall will be open at 7:30am and a guest book will be available for people to sign which will later be presented to Martin when she returns to the South Shore.

NS Gov't OK's South Canoe Wind Project

The Nova Scotia government has given the green light to a major wind-energy project in Lunenburg County. Energy Minister Charlie Parker announced today the province will move ahead with the South Canoe Wind Project. The project is being led by Oxford Frozen Foods, Nova Scotia Power and Minus Basin Pulp and Power. The wind farm will feature between 33 and 50 turbines spread over 6,400 hectares of land between Chester and Windsor. It's expected to generate enough energy to heat 28-thousand homes at full capacity. It's anticipated the wind farm will be operational by 2015.

Suspicious Fire On Walking Trail in Queens

An investigation is underway following a suspicious fire on a popular walking trail in Queens County. Members of the Liverpool Fire Department were called to put down the fire on a walking bridge on Trestle Trial about 2:30 this morning. Officials say the blaze caused significant structural damage to the bridge. Anyone with information on the fire is being asked to contact Queens RCMP.

"Dangerous Offender" Hearing Next Year For Yarmouth Man

A court in Kentville will hold a hearing next year on whether a Yarmouth man will be declared a dangerous offender. Gordon Frank Nickerson pleaded guilty to charges including kidnapping, sexual assault and dangerous driving in April. A psychiatric assessment of the 35-year-old is now in the hands of the provincial court and an application is scheduled to be heard next April and May. Nickerson was arrested in February near Kentville after police responded to a report that two women were missing from the Wedgeport area. The women were later found at the scene of a three-vehicle collision in New Minas.

South Shore Man Gets Nearly 5 Years For Luring Under-age Girls

A Bridgewater-area man has been sentenced to just under five years in prison for a variety of charges including sexual offences committed against teenaged girls. Bradley Ronald Whynot had pleaded guilty to six charges that included using texting and Facebook to lure two 15-year-old girls and a 14-year-old girl for sexual acts in exchange for drugs and money. The incidents happened in 2011 in his home in Lower Northfield. Bridgewater provincial court Judge Gregory Lenehan conceded that Whynot has a supportive family, but said they need to realize he is a criminal and a sexual predator. Lenehan also banned Whynot from owning firearms for 10 years after his release and he must report his whereabouts to authorities for the rest of his life.

Bridgewater Cop Being Investigated

An independent agency set up to investigate complaints against the police is looking at a Bridgewater police officer accused of domestic violence. A news release says town police responded to a drunk driving complaint around midnight on Tuesday. The release says ... while officers were investigating the complaint, they became aware of allegations of assault involving one of their own officers. The Bridgewater Police Service referred the incident to the Serious Incident Response Team, which has taken over the investigation. The release does not identify the accused police officer.

Nowe, Gallupe Survive Cut At Osprey Ridge

Only two of four Osprey Ridge golfers are left in the field heading into Thursday morning's third round at the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship. Ryan Nowe and Matt Gallupe have lots of work to do if they are going to make a run at winning the tournament. Nowe sits 10 shots back in a tie for 30th after a five-over-par, 76 yesterday. Gallupe, meanwhile, is 13 shots behind after an eight-over, 79. Matt Flinn and Liam Fullerton failed to make the cut of the top 70 players and ties. Ontario's Ryan Borg is the leader at two-under.

Owner Sprucing Up Former Post Office

Work has started on transforming the old post office on King Street in Bridgewater to residential and commercial property. President of Anthony Properties, Ken Anthony, says the sale closed last Friday and they have started gutting the building's interior. The building sold for under $100,000. Anthony says space is filling up quick.



Anthony says a local company is relocating to rent out a large portion of the office space. He still believes hundreds of thousands of dollars will be put into the building before work is complete.

Stephen McNeil Launches Attack On NS Power Monopoly

The province's Liberals are taking solid aim at Nova Scotia Power and its monopoly-hold on the energy market. Saying it will form a major plank in his party's next election platform, Liberal leader Stephen McNeil has told CKBW and Hank-FM News, its time someone took a stand and does something about it. In launching a major radio, television, newspaper and internet advertising blitz, McNeil says he's committed to the new Liberal policy.



McNeil tells us he's had it with power rate hikes, NSP executive bonuses and an NDP government that he says doesn't care about the plight of power consumers. He says its time the constant increasing of power rates is stopped "dead in its tracks" by opening the market to competition. McNeil says the same thing happened in the telecommunications market years ago and as a result, numerous phone companies compete for customer dollars.

Wooden Schooner Set For Launch In Lunenburg

 

The historic launch of a traditional 48-foot wooden schooner will take place in Lunenburg next week. It's the first of the 'twin schooners' to hit the water since work began on the project in December of 2009. When the keels were laid two years ago it marked the first schooner building on the Lunenburg waterfront in 30 years. The schooners are a project of Dawson Moorland and Associates headed by Captain Daniel Moreland. The vessel was specially built for actor Billy Campbell and will be christened the Martha Seabury. An official launch celebration will held at the Dory Shop Boatyard on Tuesday.

It's a celebration to cheer on Bridgewater's Olympian. Town hall will broadcast Jenna Martin's Friday morning run in London. Councillor Patrick Hirtle is encouraging everyone to show up in their Canadian colours.

Golf: Gallupe, Nowe In Contention At Junior Championship

A pair of local golfers remain in the hunt after round one at the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship at Osprey Ridge. Matt Gallupe and Ryan Nowe each shot three-over-par 74, leaving them four shots back of three players who tied for the overnight lead at one-under-par including defending champion Kevin Kwon of B.C. Matt Flinn shot nine-over while Liam Fullerton ended up 12-over-par. All four local golfers tee off Wednesday morning in the second round. Officials Dub Big Ex 'Success' For 2012

It's been dubbed a successful year for the South Shore Exhibition. The annual summer showcase brought in 42,198 people this year, up more than 2,000 people from 2011. Manager Christine Sarty says Dean Brody's concert helped make up for lost attendance due to rainy weather. She says the weather played a factor again this year.



Sarty says Brody's concert was a record-setter since she's been involved, with over 12,000 people attending the show. There have been no indications yet on who could be next year's headliners.

Chester: Webber Seeks Re-Election

The long-time warden and councillor for District 4 in Chester still enjoys political life and believes he has more to offer at the local level. In an interview with CKBW/HANK FM news, Allen Webber re-affirmed his decision to run in this fall's municipal elections. He says experience and life lessons over the years in municipality politics makes him a good candidate to continue his role on council.



Webber says he'll focus on winning his district and is hopeful he will maintain his role as warden following the election. Webber has spent the last 18 years as warden and has served on council for a total of 30 years. In a warden style governance system, the newly elected council selects who will serve in the position via secret ballot. The entire interview with Webber will air this Sunday on South Shore Sunday Morning on CKBW & HANK FM.

Two Injured After Highway 10 Crash In Cookville

Two people were taken to hospital Monday after a two vehicle mix-up on highway 10 in Cookville. The collision happened shortly after 3pm by the traffic lights near McCulloch Road. RCMP say a car was rear ended by a truck. The driver and passenger in the car were taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries are not known at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

Town Planning To Show Jenna Martin Run

Final details are still being worked out to open up town hall Friday to watch Jenna Martin run at the Olympics. Council members agreed to the initiative but there are a few obstacles standing in their way. Councillor Patrick Hirtle says there's uncertainty around whether the event will be shown live or not.




Hirtle says he plans to speak with a representatives from CTV and Rogers Sportsnet to confirm their broadcast schedule. Jenna Martin is scheduled to run her qualifying round at 8am Friday morning.

Local Golfers Ready For National Test

Four local golfers begin the tough task of trying to win a national golf tournament Tuesday at Osprey Ridge. The Canadian Junior Boys championship opens up its first round of play with 7:30am tee times. 17-year-old Liam Fullerton of Riverport will play with defending champion Kevin Kwon. He says it should be a good learning experience.



All four local golfers including Matt Gallupe, Matt Flinn and Ryan Nowe have afternoon tee times Tuesday. Nowe, a member of team Nova Scotia, says he's feeling a bit of pressure playing the championship on his home course. He says he wants to focus on playing smart and open with a good score.

VIDEO: Conservancy Group Acquires Sandy Bay Land

Three families have come together to donate a parcel of land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The Worrall, Van Loon and Carver families of Sandy Bay have donated 171-acres of beach, wetland and forest along the South Shore's coastline. A daughter for one of the families, Deborah Carver, says each family bought the land in order to protect it.



Carver says the three families owned the land since 1971. A regional vice-president with the group, Linda Stephenson, says the beach and nearby wetlands provide habitat for the endangered piping plover and other shorebirds. The Nature Conservancy of Canada spent over $500,000 for the land with financial help from the federal and provincial governments and private donors.

Local Champion Log-Roller Flattens The Competition

Champion South Shore log roller, Darren Hudson of Barrington, has won his 6th World Log-Rolling Championship in Hayward, Wisconsin. Hudson competed at the Lumberjack World Championships held over three days this past weekend, winning all 3 of his matches which took him to the finals. He rolled long-time competitor, J.R. Salzman, in a 3-1 match to take home the title. Hudson is the nephew of 9 time World Log-rolling Champion, Phil Scott. Also competing at the weekend championships was Hudson's cousin Marcel Scott. He took home 2nd place in the Boom-Run Championships and placed 7th in Log-rolling.

RCMP Search For Those Involved In Home Invasion

RCMP have one man in custody and are looking for three others after a home invasion over the weekend. In a release, police say four individuals forced their way into a home in Lunenburg County shortly after 4 o'clock on Saturday morning. The suspects allegedly used bear spray and baseball bats to attack those inside the home. Police say the victims are known to each other and the incident is not considered random. Two men were taken to hospital in Bridgewater, treated and released.

A ban on all open fires continues to be in effect across Nova Scotia. Most of the province including the South Shore is considered a low threat for wildfires, with other areas marked moderate or high. An official with the Department of Natural Resources says an update on the ban could come later this week. A province-wide ban went into effect July 12.

Norman Bows Out Of Queens Mayor Race

She was considered a front-runner in the race for mayor in the District of Queens in this fall's municipal elections. However, District 1 councillor Darlene Norman has withdrawn. She tells us she wants to continue her work with the group "Friends of Port Mouton Bay". Norman also says her family life could soon change dramatically with her husband working out of province. She says she's just as happy to re-offer for councillor.



Norman has been a councillor for district 1 for 12 years.  The mayors race now has four people including Christopher Clarke, David Dagley, Owen Hamlin and Mervin Hartlen.
